It started promising enough. The contractor seemed attentive and eager to do a good job. The way he structures his contract is hourly with a markup, but we agreed on a not to exceed number. However when we got together to sign the contract, he excluded key parts of the construction scope which we told him we wanted. So we weren't going to get the product that he sold to us at the price we negotiated. I immediately started having problems with quality of the work which he corrected. The problem is since it was hourly he was being paid two or three times to do the work correctly. He refused to credit us for the re-dos. The wall is not plumb (vertically straight) which is a problem because there are doors in the wall which cannot open all the way without scraping the floor. The shelves and poles they put in the closets are not level or at the height that I specified. He was rarely on the job to supervise the work, but was very prompt in picking up checks. His workmen damaged a large air conditioning duct and while relocating some other ducts lost some expensive duct components. THe AC system is now not funtional. He assured us that he get this work repaired/replaced, but 2 months later he has stopped taking our calls and doesn't respond to emails. We got estimates to fix this work and it will cost us $3000. We have filed a claim with our insurance company but if he doen't have insurance then we will be out our deductible. Beware.

I tried to contact Hammer and Nail LLC through the Angie's list contact information, and never heard back.

The work went very well. They did the crown molding and doors first. If you are getting fancy doors, order them first. It takes 4-5 weeks to get them made. Then, the windows and closet were built. We went with the Andersen windows, that matched the rest of the home. They were worth a few extra dollars. I had an original closet design which was good. Stephen tweaked the design a little bit so it works more efficiently. It really gives us the storage we needed. The kitchen looks completely different. I was set on getting melamine style cabinet doors. I wanted low cost and easy cleaning. However, Stephen convinced me to go with a real wood door. It was a good advice. I've been to friends homes and seen newer melamine flake at the corners where it gets wet. The maple doors are much more substantial. They made a couple of changes on the fly while things were being built. The crew was good about putting up plastic to keep the dust to a minimum. We were very pleased with the quality of work.
