Setting up the appointment was prompt and efficient. The crew of two (Tom and Josh) arrived promptly on time (actually a few minutes early). They went right to work and were finished in about an hour.
We couldn't have asked for better service and will certainly use Royal in the future.
On Nov. 20, 2012, I signed a contract with Royal Electric, and on Dec. 20. 2012 a ProTran 31410C10-circuit transfer switch was wired into my main panel. The two technicians, Ed and Tom, arrived promptly at the scheduled time. The first order of business was to drill a hole from my basement to the front of my house by the garage so that a 30 Amp cable could be run from an inlet box down to the main panel. This went without a hitch and the cable was then routed from the entry point into a chase in my finished basement to the main panel. Again this process went quickly. Both Ed and Tom were very professional, friendly, and tidy (no mess -- and they cleaned up as they went along). Ed and Tom installed the Transfer Switch next to my main panel. Did a nice neat job. Tom then began installing the PB 30 weatherproof inlet box, and made up a 25 foot 30 Amp cord to go from my generator to the inlet box. While Tom was working on this, Ed began wiring the transfer switch to the main panel.
When the cover was removed from my main panel (a circa 1970 ZINCO 150 AMP panel) both ED and I were shocked at what we saw. A total mess of jumbled and twisted wires, no space on the gound/neutral bars, and broken gound wires on some of the aluminum cables coming into the box. At that point Ed suggested the old ZINCO panel be replaced, and I agreed, primarily for safety reasons. Ed finished wiring in the transfer switch to the existing main, leaving all leads from the transfer swich long knowing that the panel would soon be replaced. Ed also and corrected all the apparent grounding problems. Following that, I started my generator, plugged it in and tested the transfer, which worked flawlessly.
On Jan. 8, 2013, Ed and Tom arrived at the scheduled time to replace my ZINCO panel with a 200 AMP Square D QO panel. Once the meter was pulled, most of the morning was spent removing and labeling the olds wires from the existing panel without damaging anything. After this was done the old panel was removed and the new panel installed. Ed and Tom then began wiring the new panel. A junction box was installed to take care of some short aluminum cables that just would reach into the new panel. They pigtailed copper to aluminum using anti-oxidant joint compound. Ed straightened the mess of cables coming into the panel so that everything looked neat. Inside the panel, the cables were neatly placed and all ground and neutrals were routed to the side. Following the wiring of the new panel each circuit was tested. Once this proved to be o.k. the transfer switch was wired back into the main panel to the appropriate circuit breakers, and once again the transfer switch was tested.
I can't say enough about Ed and Tom. Both were very professional, knowledgeable, and above all just nice people. They are extremely neat and meticulous -- wire management, leveling the panel and transfer switch when installing, and dirt and mess management and clean-up. Working the contracts with Dave was a pleasure. I must say that all the people at Royal Electric were very nice to work with, and I would highly recommend this company to anyone.
On Jan. 10, 2013 we lost power at approximately 3 AM when someone ran into a utility pole. At 7:30 AM I fired up my portable generator, plugged it in, and turned on the circuits on my transfer switch. Worked like a champ. Power didn't come back on until around 11:30 AM. It sure beat pulling and plugging in extension cords.
