I got two estimates. Ferdy's was higher by $200 or $300. I said I would hire him for the lower bid and he agreed. I wanted to have him do the painting because several people in my neighborhood had recommended him. It started out pretty well, except they got drywall mud all over my tile floors. I think if the floors were wood they might have put down more dropcloths. But they left a mess that they ended up having to clean. There was still a lot left, which made washing and sealing the new tile floors a lot harder for me. I wanted wood cabinets in the basement painted. Ferdy took the doors off and did not keep track of which ones went where. So when the doors were put back, they were uneven and some don't close properly any more. One of the workers used a pillow case I had left on my washing machine as a rag and now it has paint on it. There is a big area where the wall was not sanded smooth. There are also areas where the white ceiling paint meets the grey wall color where the lines are very uneven. It looks like I did it without painters tape and I can't paint a straight line. And there are areas at the top of the wall where the paint was not put on thickly enough and you can see the primer underneath. I have contacted Ferdy twice about coming over to at least fix the uneven lines and mismatched cabinet doors. He claimed he put the doors back on correctly which is obviously not true. He said he would come by to look at things two weeks ago and did not. At that time, he asked me to post a recommendation on the neighborhood listserv. He seemed more interested in me doing this for him than in making sure he and his workers had actually done a good job. I called him again and he said he would come last week. Once again, no Ferdy. Well, I will not be posting a recommendation on my neighborhood listserv. My impression is that Ferdy has gotten his money and as far as he is concerned, he is done with my basement. Ferdy is a nice young man, but he needs to improve his customer service skills and learn to be more thorough. Nice is not good enough when you are providing a service for a fee. And he was not cheap.
