Tomato was excellent. From the scheduling and communication, to the support on permitting in DC, to the actual work done, the crew at Tomato were great to work with. They were clear at every step as to what was happening, what needed to be done, and estimating the cost. Great group of people to work with, and would call them first for any electrical work in the future.

The job went great. Initially, the lights weren't bright enough in the kitchen. We realized that the the bulkhead in my kitchen was shielding the light from one side of the kitchen. So Matt came back out and suggested installing lights into the bulkhead. This made all the difference. Matt made it very clear that he wanted us to be happy and that he would do whatever it took to accomplish that goal. This was the second time I've hired Tomato. They are just an outstanding company. Matt is one of the best people you could meet. And Peter, Scott, Oscar, and everyone doing the work are so friendly and knowledgeable. I'm sure that I will be hiring Tomato in the future for any electrical and lighting needs.

We purchased a house in May and hired Tomato Electric to do a major heavy up upgrade along with several small jobs in the house. It took the company about three months to finally complete all the jobs on Tuesday, August 8. While the field manager from the company has been nice and friendly and the company’s overall work was ok, we gave Tomato Electric the lowest rating for reasons outlined below. 1. Not being thorough The payment schedule outlined in our invoice corresponds to the progress of the work. When Tomato called to collect the 2nd payment, the office manager confirmed with me on the phone that they had completed all the jobs at that point (other than the heavy up upgrade). When my husband and I went to check on their work (we had not moved in yet at that point), we found out that they had missed one of the jobs listed in the invoice. Also, the three-way wall switch in the living room was installed on the wrong side of the wall. We were never contacted or consulted for the location of the switch. Also, even though we specifically asked them to keep the dry wall cut outs for us, Tomato still trashed them out, making it more work for us to patch up the holes. 2. Unfamiliar with State inspection procedure and process, and the entire process was so poorly handled and coordinated. We were told by Tomato that we need to pass county inspection for the temporary heavy up set up before we can schedule a “work with” with the power company to completely switch over. Before scheduling the county inspection, I requested Tomato to try best to avoid mid morning because I need to take my children to school (my husband leaves for work early in the morning). Since Tomato couldn’t really control the schedule, I was told that if we were unavailable to make it to the inspection, the company could send a technician over (since they still have a copy of the key) to let the inspector in to avoid failing the inspection by default. However, when the office manager called to inform me about the inspection early Friday morning on June 16, I was told that the inspector would arrive between 9 -10am. I expressed my frustration because it directly conflicted with my specific request earlier. Being unsure if I could get to the house in time, I asked the office manager to send a technician over anyway. After dropping my kids off at school, I rushed to the new house and the county inspector arrived few minutes after. After checking both inside and outside installations, the county inspector was very puzzled and said to me, “ I am not sure about the purpose of this inspection because there is nothing for me to inspect. None of these wires is hooked up.” At that moment, I immediately called Tomato trying to sort things out with the inspector. Needless to say, we “failed” the inspection due to incomplete installation. The inspector left a specific note asking Tomato to contact the power company to schedule the work with as well as another inspection once the switch over is complete. I took time off from work for nothing – complete waste of time. Worse, Tomato’s technician never showed up. After that, we didn’t hear anything from Tomato for another two weeks. I contacted Tomato to check on the status but no one answered so I left a message. When Tomato called back, not only were they unsure about the status of our case but they also didn’t know that they needed to schedule the work with with the power company. Another week passed and nothing from Tomato. I called and was told by the office manager that they had had a hard time scheduling the appointment because the power company was backed up. After another week, I followed up with Tomato again and was told that they had been leaving messages for the contact at the power company. Finally, it was late July and I lost my patience with Tomato. I called and asked Tomato to provide me with the contact info of the person they had been dealing with at the power company. I contacted the person at the power company and was told the same thing – the power company needed the date from its productions department in order to schedule the work with. With that, I reached out to a special contact, who is an executive at the power company, and asked for a favor. Her assistant was able to find out the real reason why we couldn’t get a date – it was because we had a failed inspection on record. I explained to her assistant the reason why we received a failed inspection and read her the notes indicated by the county inspector. After that, we immediately got the date for the work with appointment on August 4. Had I not interfered and pulled the strings on this case, we would still be waiting. The work with was completed on Friday, August 4, and we passed the county inspection on Tuesday, August 8. Tomato called to collect the final payment in that afternoon even before my husband and I had a chance to review the final invoice. Tomato called again to collect the payment on Thursday, August 10. When I pointed out that the invoice indicates that the payment is not due until September 1, the office manager told me that the due date was automatically generated by the software, which was incorrect. What a terrible customer service… It has been a very frustrating experience to deal with Tomato Electric, but they surely are extremely efficient when it comes to collecting payments.
Response from Tomato Electric
"Please read response below.. We feel that this is a very unfair review as it deals mainly with a scheduling issue which for the most part was out of our control. All issues about the actual work were dealt with promptly. There were no drawings provided for this job to go by. We did miss some of the items on the list, however, when notified of this, we scheduled a return visit as soon as our schedule allowed to take care of the missed items. As far as the three-way switch being on the wrong side of the doorway, we truly believe and it is unfortunate, but I think this was a miscommunication between the estimator/field superintendent and the homeowner regarding the switch location. The switch was installed in the location that was discussed between the home owner and the estimator at the time of the estimate appointment. After being notified of the issue, we promptly returned to take care of the problem. As for the holes, most were left in the ceiling but some did fall behind the wall as they were being cut. Yes, there were a few that were not usable. This information came from the technician that was on the job site. We had conflicting information from the county and from Pepco regarding proper procedure. Because we were relocating the meter socket from the back of the house to the side of the house, Pepco told us we needed a TPF (Temp Pending Final) inspection prior to them scheduling a "work with". The county told us we needed a "work with" first. We could not wire the new electrical panel with our new service because we needed the old service cable, which was still "hot" from Pepco, to continue to power the house. We finally got the right answers from both parties (Pepco is not easy to get a hold of) and then proceeded to schedule the finalization of this part of the job as soon as Pepco and our schedule would allow. The problem with knowing when an inspection is scheduled for is we do not find out the time until the morning of inspection and that is only if the inspector answers his/her phone or calls back after leaving a message. Once we found out the time, we did send an employee to meet the inspector. However, once we were notified that the inspector arrived prior to us getting to the house and the homeowner had already let him in, we stopped the employee because there was no reason for the employee to continue to the house. Unfortunately, Pepco is not the most reliable in returning phone calls or even just answering the phone. We did our best in staying on top of them. We leave messages and wait for a return phone call, we then will call back a few days later, sometimes needing to leave yet another message to only wait for another period of time. This phone call battle can sometimes take a week or more. We know it's frustrating for customers, but this is where our hands are tied dealing with Pepco. Again, this is where Pepco does not give you solid answers and they will not just schedule a job. Pepco does not always give us the correct information. It would be nice if we had strings to pull with Pepco. Our invoice does say in the "terms column" - Due Upon Receipt. We were simply trying to close out a job that, for us, took way to long as well."

Things couldn't have gone better. Firstly, Matt (the estimator and project manager), was super nice and super knowledgeable. Tomato was the only company to suggest installing a generator interlock kit rather than a separate panel. And the price was actually lower than the competition. Ty, the electrician who did the work, was just outstanding. He did quality workmanship and was also really nice and informative. He explained in detail how to use everything and gave me some great tips. Both Matt and Ty went above and beyond normal customer service. I'm already thinking of some other projects that I will use Tomato Electric for.

Overall, bad job. After the initial estimate things went downhill. They had me hire a carpenter to open up the wall to specific dimensions they provided. They didn't even use most of the extra space I created. The carpenter cost me $400. The scheduler was unprofessional, frequently not returning calls or emails. Once she claimed she didn't have my phone number even though I had emailed it to her several times. Finally got things scheduled and when I inspected, determined work not done properly. Panel cover not installed correctly, some wiring did not pass inspection and data cabinet not installed correctly. Called and emailed and finally got response. Electrician came out to fix and didn't have correct parts. It happened that I had a part they could use, so I gave it to them and it worked. Still didn't have a cover for the panel. Was supposed to come back same day and didn't return. Called, emailed, finally got a response and they got most of it right the third time. What should have been done in a day took more than a month and a half. No apology. No explanation. No price break for all the inconvenience caused to me. No reimbursement for the extra expense of unnecessary carpentry work and part I provided. I would not recommend even though the electricians were all very nice. Price would have been fair if they did what they promised on time and had not caused me unnecessary expense.

The electrician was on time, and friendly. They were excellent at their work and perfomed it as quickly as it could be done.
The provider hadn't counted on the extra small space between my ceiling and attic floor, and therefore there was a slight delay while "slim" variants were ordered and supplied to the electrician on site, but it added no more than a day to the job, and likewise when some of the supplied trims were found to be broken on delivery, the electrician received and installed the extra trim a few days after finishing the main job. It was all done with excellent communication and a great attitude from the electrician performing the work.
Superb contractor, and I'd definitely recommend to anyone looking for electrical work.

Tomato Electric are superb! The initial consultation was great. Paul came for a consultation. he was very knowledgeable and very professional. I had a huge list and he was very patient with me. Some of the things I had on the list were ideas, and he had excellent advice.

Then the guys came to start the work -- and oh my goodness the attention was unparalleled! I felt like all of Tomato Electric came to my house, from team leaders, to supervisors, to electricians that did the work. I felt so important!

Joe, Peter, and Daniel were super! they came in and immediately started working. charging through my really long list. Joe digested a lot of information, as I quickly went through my list and my "demands" - as I rushed out to take the kids to school. They were able to do most of the work in just two days.. and I went to work on both days, leaving them to work in peace! I trusted them from the moment they came in, simply because Joe was open minded, attentive, and had lots of good advice.

the fans were super complicated to install, since the rooms have vaulted ceilings with a massive slope -- they prepped the work, set it all up, told me that I need to get an extension -- very clear instructions :-) and as soon as Amazon delivered, Joe and Peter were back -- and sure enough.. the fans are up and working so beautifully!

I hope I remembered all the names right! but in any case, they were all fabulous! and I already have a new list for them to come back and work on :-) :-)

Really liked working with them all and would highly recommend Tomato Electric - in fact, I already did!

THANK YOU

Tomato Electric was kind enough to work out a schedule to get someone there before Christmas - as I was concerned that the previous vendor had maybe left the house unsafe.  We had flickering lights in a  number of rooms, as well as one room with lights that didn't work at all. Matt found a variety of loose wires and circuit breakers in the panel that had been worked on and not put back properly, as well as going through the specifics of the wiring problems in the kitchen.  He was efficient, thorough, and left us feeling everything was as it should be - and knowing exactly what we needed to do if we wanted to change some of the long-term issues.  All in all a great value and experience.  They will be my go-to firm in the future.
