Our front porch was original to the house (built in 1923) and was really showing its age. Tom assessed what needed to be done, and gave us TWO detailed scopes of work with the associated costs -- a proposal for conventional construction, and a proposal for construction with higher end (maintenance-free) materials. There was no question about the scope of work in either contract. We signed the contract at the end of March. His crew arrived on site (as discussed) a couple of weeks later to begin removing the old porch, taking exceptional care to support the existing porch roof while he rebuilt the structure under it from the footers up. Tom got all the required permits before beginning the removal of the old porch, and worked with the inspectors at every stage of the construction. The crew made significant progress daily, and freely discussed their approach and technique with us to make sure we understood what they were doing and were happy. We had multiple discussions regarding details and style as the work progressed. Tom did his best to show us physical examples of what he was building - he even built samples that helped us envision how the final product would look. We wanted a specific look for our railings, and he built a sample for us to see before he began building them. When the scope of work grew, he submitted a detailed change order (with associated cost) to us for our approval. The work concluded on schedule, and we were very pleased with the quality of the work. Many of our neighbors have commented on the craftsmanship and appearance of our porch.
