"Thanks for your business. Please let me know if you need anything done in the future."
"I enjoyed working with you to install handrails in your home and your daughter's home. Please contact me when you need anything else."
"Thank you for your business. I look forward working with you in the future."
"There were several reasons this job took a while: It was difficult to hang the rack on the wall because there were no studs in that part of the wall, so I had to put in many anchors to make it really secure. The screws that came with the kit to secure the TV to the wall were the wrong size, so I was unable to complete this task. (I showed her the length of screws needed.) It is difficult to attach baby gates securely to large openings on a staircase when there is a high baseboard. I had to carefully cut several pieces of wood of varying thicknesses so the gates would fit well. Also, I carefully attached the gates so when they are removed, the holes can be easily patched and will not be too visible. (I explained all of this to [member name removed] when I was doing the work.)"

I have a dripping faucet and was hoping it might be repaired. We agreed to his spending a few minutes to take it apart to see if the fixture could be salvaged but not wasting any more time on it if it looked like I should just get a new fixture. He showed me the non-standard parts that would need to be replaced, with no guarantees it would actually fix the drip so I decided i will get a new faucet and have him come back.
The latch on the door is something you would think I could do myself, but it turned out to be complicated because my door frame is metal. Karl was able to get it to work but offered to come back and epoxy it if it doesn't hold up. So far it is keeping my cat out of the closet so I am happy. The broom repair is something a handy person could do but anytime you mention wall anchors i would rather just pay someone and it turned out much better than if i had tried to do it. I am really glad I had him do the smoke detector as well because it involved being on a ladder and putting connectors on wires.
Karl did not mind the minutiae so I did not feel embarrassed about being a feeble homeowner. He was very pleasant and interesting to chat with and I felt totally comfortable with him in my house. He did not waste any time yet was very thorough. My list took a little less than an hour. I feel I got my money's worth.
I am definitely hiring Karl again. I am glad that I have someone in my neighborhood i can call for odds and ends!

I prepared the area so it would not get dirty (paying for the materials myself), which I am glad I did because they did not do much to take care with the mess outside of sweeping. Left small things for me to do, such as reinstall the smoke alarm, clean the walls they marked up, take down all of the materials I put up to protect the walls and floors, and paint the new trim. Also, all the debris was left for me to dispose of, he even seemed hesitant to supply the construction-grade garbage bags, I am surprised he did not charge me for them. Job took 11 hours, was estimated for 6 hours. It was almost 9:00 pm when they left; they did not want to start early in the day because the "helper" was coming from Baltimore, even though my intent was to hire someone who was nearby where I lived so travel would not be an issue, so much for that plan.
I felt taken advantage of, though perhaps I was just tired at the time, but my reaction has not changed in the weeks that have passed. The quality of the work was acceptable, but I would not use them again. Too far off the estimate for both time and money and after paying all that, still had things to finish myself. There were no surprises in the job, so I would have expected a more accurate estimate from someone who is supposed to know what he is doing and, by his account, has done "lots" of thee types of jobs, which was not at all apparent to me. To be fair, I did not call and voice any of these issues, just wanted to move on and be done with it, but in fairness to the Angie's List readers, am providing my feedback.
"I have installed numerous attic stairs but this job was unusually complicated; cutting old beams and installing new ones in an old house is challenging. Therefore, I discussed with my helper how to make the new beams strong, to safely support the attic stairs and the weight of a person climbing up while carrying something heavy. Installing attic stairs always requires two persons, and I always use ropes to lift and install the new stairs for both safety and convenience. When I first gave her the estimate, I had explained that because it was an old house, it was difficult to know the exact cost. I also asked her how she wanted to dispose of the debris and she asked me to put it in trash bags and said she would dispose of it. She was annoyed I left to pick up my wife, but I had explained to her I had taken my wife to the emergency room the night before, my wife was unexpectedly admitted, and I had to pick her up to drive her home that day. Even though my wife had been hospitalized the night before my appointment to install the stairs, I did not cancel the job. When it was getting late, I offered to come back the next day to finish the work, but she was eager to get everything done, so we stayed late to complete the job. After we swept the area, I offered to do additional clean-up, put up the smoke alarm, and paint the trim, but she said it was not necessary. Although one of my helpers has left the area, I have other experienced, competent workers who work with me. As she said in her review, she never expressed any dissatisfaction with my work at the time or afterwards. If she had, I would have addressed her concerns. I always go out my way to satisfy the needs and wishes of my clients."

"[Member name removed]’s ceiling was badly damaged by the water leak. I explained that it would require several visits to complete the work because it takes several days for the spackle to dry before it can be sanded and painted. I have repaired many ceilings, and this one had been poorly installed and badly damaged, and therefore took a lot of time to repair properly. I always cover all surfaces and clean up thoroughly when I am done. He wanted me to paint only the kitchen ceiling and not the adjoining dining room ceiling. It is very difficult to get the color of new paint to match old paint even if you use the same paint. I had worked on [member name removed]’s house several times before on other projects, and he always seemed pleased with my work. I completed the work on his kitchen ceiling more than two years ago and until now, he had not expressed any dissatisfaction. In addition to the work on the kitchen, at the same time, I installed a medicine chest and two towel racks which he did not mention in his review. I charged him a total of six hours for repairing and painting the badly damaged ceiling, and installing the other items, which is very reasonable. I pride myself in all aspects of my work and satisfying each customer’s wishes. I am very sorry [member name removed] was unhappy, and if he had told me at the time, I would have worked with him to completely resolve his concerns."
