Daniel Krienbuehl Contractors Inc

Founded 2001 • With Angi since July 2005

Daniel started his construction career in 1983 as an apprentice in Switzerland, Europe. There he learned from experienced old school carpenters how to timber frame and build log houses. Cutting mortise and tenons for structural posts is still something that's done today. Since the late 80's, Daniel has learned all about the ever-changing U.S. construction industry. Daniel started his own remodeling company in 2001 and has since designed and built many additions and remodels in and around Montgomery County, MD. Due to years of experience, Daniel is able to make design changes that make construction easier and cheaper. He has proved himself to be a great communicator so that all parties involved in a remodeling project work as one. His ability to plan, schedule, and execute projects have made jobs less stressful and more rewarding for his clients. Things most frequently mentioned in client reviews are that Daniel and DK are staying within budget, getting the job done on time, are responsive and available, have clean and organized job sites, and are experienced. Through Angie's List, we got the contact. We would really like to use them. It came on a little bit too expensive for what we wanted to use it for. They quoted us for $80000. The service was excellent. He was very, very responsive to everything. If it wasn't for the price issue, we would definitely go with them. It was for a significant amount of work to be done but it was just outside of our price range. His price is fair for the market.

Daniel was the most knowledgeable contractor that I met with. He was very professional and easy to deal with. Daniel provided very thorough and complete pricing and helped me to resolve unknowns that helped drive the overall cost of the project down. Daniel is very current with the best construction methods in regards to energy efficiency and green building. I would have loved to award Daniel my project, but due to budget issues I had to only award the structural/exterior shell work to a GC and I am managing the rest of the project myself.

We're very pleased with them. We got estimates from three different companies and Daniel's presentation of what he could do was good. His price was the best or close to the best. He followed through with things he promised. Their work was good. It was quality work. They got things right. They did some finishing touches on some things that came out a little different than we were planning. They made sure we were happy with the job.

We had two meetings with Daniel to discuss marjo renovations to the house; he had some great ideas, and was very responsive, and put together detailed proposals. We ultimately decided not to move forward with the major renovations. However, I was very impressed with Daniel and would consider him for any future renovations.

Daniel was very professional and held to his commitments. The work was done on time and at what we thought was high quality and reasonable cost. Two things I wish he had done were to suggest putting in a skylight, which would have certainly been cheaper and easier to have done when the ceiling was removed. It's not his fault that I didn't think of a skylight at the time, but I would have welcomed the suggestion. Also, when cutting the brick not enough care was taken to prevent dust from permeating the house. When I raised the issue he put up a plastic sheeting but made no offer to clean up the mess. Maybe I expect too much, but that's what it would take to get the highest rating.

We asked Daniel and two other contractors to bid on our project. Daniel's was the lowest bid of the three. We also visited several of his previous projects before we decided to go with him._x000D_|_x000D_|The project was an almost complete renovation of our second floor including adding a dormer, expanding a dormer, adding a roof beam and other structural elements to our under built house, roofing, siding, insulation, windows, HVAC, electrical, and finishing out three bedrooms and our master bathroom. We also had Daniel and his crew remove the existing sunporch and build a new four season room with an attached deck and universal access ramp. There were a few additional pieces like replacing windows and doors and ceilings in other rooms and coding up old openings in masonry. In the end only one room of out house was not touched by this renovation._x000D_|_x000D_|We are very pleased with Daniel and his work, and here is why. His crew was here everyday at 7:00 AM and worked straight through. They were always kind and courteous; the type of people that you can trust being in your house all day when you are away. They did excellent work start to finish. Daniel was on site daily to check on progress and we had the same three workers at our site throughout the project. They were respectful of our family and our needs (we lived in the house during the work). They managed the sub contractors well throughout the project. The project came in very close to budget. Unanticipated change orders came to only about 1% of the project. The project did run past the original time estimate but that was largely due to difficult weather, a delay from the window manufacturer, changes in the needed structural work, and the challenging inspectors we have in our county. To be honest, the biggest mistake we had in the entire project was that the pairing contractor's person started to paint some trim with the wrong color and Daniel's foreman discovered it and checked with us and had it corrected right away. When the biggest mistake is paint color...you can really feel like you made a great choice in contractor._x000D_|_x000D_|We are delighted with our house. It is now cozy, warm, solid, energy efficient....as well as beautiful.

my expectations: Definitely rely on Daniel's vast experience. He pointed out insulation that should be done and doors that needed to be changed that I didn't realize would affect the project. He has a wealth of knowledge and strikes me as a real craftsman.

I called Daniel in to show him what I wanted and get an estimate. He show up promptly and listened attentively and asked questions then made suggestions on how we might improve the concept. His insight was instrumental in rethinking the design which we are now undertaking before having him tackel the project. He may not be the least expensive, but I have great confidence his work will more than live up to my expectations.

Our records show that we were contacted by the Customer on April 4, 2012. We agreed to do a site visit on April 10th at 7 PM. I don’t remember being late for the meeting. No drawings or specifications were on hand to price the work accurately, so we based the estimated cost on similar projects we did in the past. We submitted a written estimate to the Customer's on April 16th. We have never heard back, by phone or email, until this post (7 Months later). Please do not hesitate to contact us. We will respond as quickly and accurately as possible. Daniel Krienbuehl

Overall, it went great. We love, love, love the finished house. We purchased it knowing it would need some major work, and delayed the closing to use the time to plan the work, as the seller was very gracious about allowing us access. Daniel was among the four companies we got bids from. Of those, he was one of two we seriously considered. The other was a design/build company that is well rated on Angie's List, and we thought they would likely do a fine job. However, we chose Daniel even though he was more expensive as we felt that we would be more involved in the process and that the finished quality would be higher. We were not disappointed at all. Daniel recommended an architect for the project, and they were excellent. He also brought all the subcontractors in early and we got to meet them - they all were very professional. Fortunately, we were able to stay in our old house while work was done on the new one. Everything was ready to go when we closed on the house. And go to it did. The very next day they were on site starting demolition, and by the end of the week there was a big hole in the kitchen that eventually turned into a big bay window. Construction proceeded apace for three and a half months. Daniel had his crew there every single day, as well as subcontractors as needed. He did a great job coordinating all the work, and we kept busy making sure that we had chosen all the materials he needed. While there were some oddities about how our house was constructed that caused changes in the plan, Daniel handled those with grace. Even things that went wrong were taken care of, for example when the painters accidentally primed some wood paneling we were planning on not painting due to the cost - Daniel got them to paint it all at no additional charge. Everything finished right on time and within the budget we had agreed upon in advance, absent some changes we asked for along the way. We couldn't ask for much more than that, and the high-quality of the work was just a bonus. A few words about Daniel - his background and formal training is in construction and building (in Switzerland, where he is from), and he is very experienced in the area. He is laid back and easy to deal with, and kept us very involved in the process, which worked for us (the other contractors had more of a "choose some stuff from our showroom, and we will have you over when it was done"). In fact, he had us out at the site almost every day to go over what had been done the day before and what was being done that day and in the future. That let us catch problems early and have a say in how to fix them. He also only works on one site at a time, and while we were waiting together one day for something, he told me how he had to pass up some higher paying work because he had already committed his time elsewhere. This just shows his high level of integrity. He has great subcontractors. They did high-quality work. I would absolutely recommend Daniel for other work, and have already done so. We happen to be done for a while, though we have some other smaller projects we will ask Daniel to bid on in the future.
Description of Work
Daniel oversaw a pretty much complete remodel of a home we purchased. He and his subcontractors: put in a big floor-to-ceiling bay window in the kitchen; put in new hardwood floors in the kitchen and family room and new slate flooring in the foyer; refinished all the other hardwood flooring in the house, about 2000 sq ft; tore out the master bath and redid the space while splitting it into a bath and laundry room; added skylights; redid 3 other bathrooms including tiling showers; added 90 ceiling light fixtures and upgraded the electrical system; installed new kitchen cabinetry and appliances and lighting in the kitchen; installed storm doors; and many other smaller things I am probably forgetting.

Pre Construction: Daniel focused on our needs and listened to us. He worked with us to effectively value engineer the project to fit in our budget by educating us on all the items and how each would effect the end result of the construction. During Construction: Daniel was on site every day and if needed would meet with us to review the progress and to inform us of coming events. We were very informed throughout the entire process. They started the project on time and finished on time and within budget. They kept our house amazingly clean, especially given the amount of work we had done. Post Construction: The quality of the construction is excellent and seamlessly flows the existing portions of the house. Daniel was happy to provide contact information for his suppliers and sub contractors for a couple of items we needed to have done after construction. Now, 6 months after completion, Daniel remains available and responsive to answer questions and make recommendations. I would absolutely use Daniel again in the future and have recommended him to everyone I know who is in need of contracting services.

Daniel Krienbuehl Contractors built and addition onto our house which was originally built in 1953. We bumped out the back, adding a master suite, and eat-in kitchen, relocated an interior bathroom, built a new hallway to access the addition, replaced the HVAC system, replaced sliding door to patio and increased the electricity feed to the house. DK Contractors were excellent to work with from start to finish.

He and his crew, including Henry (foreman), Walter and Jose are seasoned professionals. Hard workers, punctual, excellent craftsmen, reliable. Very honest. I always felt confident I could leave them alone in my home without any problems. Easy to get hold of/responsive. Did an excellent job. Beautiful kitchen.

Daniel Krienbuehl Contractors did a kitchen renovation (complete tear out, reconfiguration - moving window, door, redo plumbing, electrical (including new main circuit beaker), lighting, drywall, install new cabinets, appliances, molding, flooring (laminate), sink, fixtures, and tiled backsplash. All according to my plans/specs, but he also does design work if needed. Price was competitive. Interviewed 4 contractors (serious candidates). His bid was within a few hundred dollars of others.

I first contacted Daniel via email to ask about this job, and although he was busy with other projects, he came out early one morning to take a look at the tiny hole in my bedroom closet ceiling that served as the entrance to my attic. I told him what I needed and hoped to have. We tossed around a couple of ideas, and he said he would send me an estimate within the week. I wasn't sure about using Daniel or going with someone else I actually knew, because I thought I might be able to get a really good price from my 'friend' but they were not good about responding to my emails, and Daniel responded to me every time rather quickly! I decided to definitely go with Daniel, even if it might cost me a bit more than getting the 'friend discount' because I was certain he would be reliable. I was right. Two days before he was to do the job, he called and asked if he could come over to bring the ladder, and also to take one more look at the space just to be sure he would have everything he needed and to remeasure so there would be no surprises. By doing that he discovered that the beams that the stairs were to be installed between were placed a bit too close, so they were going to have to do some work to get them pushed out to make the stairs fit. It was good that he knew that in advance. When the day came for the job, Daniel and his crew showed up bright and early, exactly at the time he said they would, and started right away. As the day went on, I was sure there was no way they were going to finish it all in one day and would have to come back, but they proved me wrong! And they even finished up at a normal 'end of the day' time - 5:00. I was very happy with the job, and his whole crew. They were friendly and courteous and worked very hard! I baked them some cookies at the end of their day to thank them!! I would happily recommend Daniel to anyone needing any kind of work done inside their home. I hope to be able to have him help me with some additional projects in the coming year.
Description of Work
Daniel and his crew, which included his own workmen and another contractor who was an electrician that works with him, installed a pull-down aluminum staircase up to my attic. They also installed two light fixtures in the attic, one on each end, and put in a switch outlet, with a plug, at the top of the stairs for me. In addition, his guys built out a small platform area for me at the beginning of the attic, as you reach the top of the stairs, so once I am up there, I have some room to move around. It also gives me a platform to begin to expand the area more on my own so I will have more room to store things. The job was beautifully done in one day!

I contacted Daniel to remodel my basement after receiving several estimates from other contractors. He was professional, courteous and knowledgable. His estimate was affordable in my price range. The contract was clear and concise. We discussed at length the responsibilities of the contractor and homeowner so I completely understood what materials or services I needed to provide for the work to begin and continue. We decided to use Daniel as the remodeling contractor and I would recommend his work to others. He provided several ideas including placement of the sink/toilet and shower in the bathroom and paint options. His schedule was maintained and finished the job on time. He provided several references to flooring, fixtures, carpet, doors and other items so that I could research on my own. Our basement was unfinished so we started from scratch. His workers were punctual and courteous even bringing their own microwave for lunch as not to disturb the homeowner. They worked quickly and cleaned up after each day. The subcontractors were courteous and punctual as well (sometimes early) working very quickly to finish the job. The quality of the work was excellent. Daniel responded very quickly to any changes, modifications, questions I had by personally taking of care of the issue or having his subs respond to any issues. For example, the doors were installed with brass hinges. I sent Daniel an email asking if they could be replaced with nickel hinges. Without question, the next morning, his workers were replacing the hinges and door knobs with the nickel type. This attention to detail and attention to the homeowner is why I would use Daniel Krienbuehl contractors again.
Description of Work
Daniel remodeling my unfinished basement. It was a blank canvas requiring framing, drywall, electrical, painting and installation of a new bathroom. I also had to move an I-beam support post to make additional room for the bathroom and passage to the stairs. The bathroom rough-in needed some modification which required the concrete floor to be dug up and plumbing moved. The bathroom install included sink/vanity, shower stall, toilet, and ceramic tile floor. Modifications were made to the HVAC units to provided proper ventilation in the space as well as several custom features to the doors to accommodate the basement configuration and limitations of the space.

I called the company and left a message regarding a basement remodel. About a week later they called me back and left a message on my machine telling me I could call back in the afternoons. I called back the next day and still have not received a return phone call.Very disappointing regarding the high ratings this company has recieved on other occasions. UPDATE: I have received a return phone call and have a scheduled appointment. Unfortunately they could not make an appointment for another 2 weeks, but at least I'm not in a hurry to get the project completed. I will update again after I receive their estimate.

We haven't decided between him and several other people but we will most likely go with him. We were really impressed with him. We thought it was a pretty good and reasonable estimate for all the work. Another estimate we got was $89,000. He seemed very knowledgeable and very willing to work with us. The price was right. He seemed like a really nice guy and he was willing to spend as much time as we wanted. He scheduled the appointment and came very quickly. We had actually had problems getting estimates. Two people came and then we never heard from them, which really surprised us. Daniel was right there and the next week we had an estimate. We are waiting on one other estimate and then we will make a decision. We would recommend him and we think he is reasonably priced. We don't consider him super cheap but we don't want somebody that doesn't know what they are doing. He was very patient and thorough in his discussions with us. He seemed very professional and answered all our questions quickly. He did exactly what he said he was going to do and returned the estimate to us within a week. He also did a follow up call and said that if the price was too high we could eliminate some things to get the price down. He seems really willing to work with us.
Description of Work
We got an estimate from Daniel Krienbuehl Contracting to put a shed dormer in the back of the house that will go all the way across our Cape Cod house. It is a dormer but it has the effect of raising the roof because it goes all the way across the house. He would also put in a new bathroom and redo all the wallboard upstairs. It is basically gutting the upstairs, putting in a bathroom and raising the roof.

I cannot imagine a more professional experience. Daniel is extremely knowledgeable about construction and inspires complete confidence in his clients. Together we worked out the redesign of what was originally an outdoor enclosed porch to a real addition of living space to our home. Daniel's crew was a pleasure to work with. They are skilled craftsmen, but also very pleasant to get to know. Everyone came on time, was responsive to our needs, respectful of the property (e.g., meticulous clean-up each day), and worked as a team. The job was completed on time and on budget. We will absolutely contact with Daniel Krienbuehl the next time we have remodeling to be done. This was the best experience we have ever had in many decades of repair to three different homes.

I'm very satisfied with the outcome of the project. The work was completed with excellent quality and attention to detail. Daniel's team arrived on time every day and worked meticulously every day to get the project done. They worked extra hours during a window of good weather to ensure that the old roof was removed and a new roof was back on before it rained. There were several tricky aspects to the project including re-pitching the joists, and ensuring that the edges of the roof that abut to the exterior brick wall and around the railing supports were completely sealed. This was all expertly done. I really felt that the team was working as if it was their own home. They were even very contentious about locking the door in the evening when they left for the day when no one was home. The recent severe rainstorm was the first time in a while that I've not been concerned about the integrity of my roof.
Description of Work
Daniel Krienbuehl Contractors redid a second story porch that sits over an interior room. The porch was originally built around 1964. The porch features a flat roof/walking surface that was starting to leak into the interior room. To repair the roof, Daniel and his team completely removed the original roof, leaving only the joists. Adjustments were made to the joists to create a very slight pitch to the roof. Then new plywood and DecTec waterproof membrane were installed. Additionally, a new railing was added to the porch that was attached to the joists.

After seeing 7 contractors for planning and estimates- decided on DK because price was reasonable, liked Daniel's work style and ethics. Sure glad I did! He started (and finished) the job on time and was a pleasure to work with throughout the project. Finished basement included about 1200 sq. ft, additional electric, new windows and door, full bathroom including shower and tile, laminate flooring, stair case. During the process, Daniel was patient and helped with planning- was very accommodating and took his time to answer all questions. His team came to work early everyday and worked all day. Subcontractors (plumbing & electric) were great. The site was cleaned up every day and organized. I cannot say enough good things about my experience here in this space. I had no challenges with Daniel and his team. I have no regrets and the basement area is beautiful. Not included in my initial project was installation of laminate floor which he did too. Great! I will absolutely work with him again and highly recommend his services.

Start was delayed because I was unaware/Mtgy County neglected to tell me of the setback increase of 12' for a 36' wide outbldg facing the property line. I hired a property survey, relocated the garage, & Daniel obtained county approval. Daniel subcontracted the foundation & concrete floor. I requested, & received, a very smooth floor. Electrical work to meet code, and installation of 2 overhead doors was my responsibility; Daniel suggested vendors. The garage has a shingle roof, vinyl outer walls, & ventilation from the sofits to the ridge vent. Daniel always kept appointments, was punctual and helpful, as were his workers. The service door & windows installed by Daniel's firm lock precisely & operate smoothly. Daniel made suggestions for insulation (not included in his work). All work appears to be professional-grade.
Description of Work
Daniel proposed 3 garage designs over a 9-11 month interval, as I became more certain of my requirements. I needed a hobby-shop plus storage. I decided on a 36' x 24' garage. I preferred brick construction, but rejected it due to cost. I had purchased plans for a 2-story garage for which building codes permit office-type space on the 2nd level, but manufactured roof trusses could not have been used, raising the cost. I then found garage plans with an attic, accessible via pull-down ladder, using manufactured roof trusses. Daniel proposed such a design, which I accepted.

The job was performed on time and with minimal fuss. The work was high quality and issues that arose during the renovation were brought up on a timely basis. The suggestions were helpful and we felt they were real and important issues. They cleaned up and removed all debris after the job. We would and have recommended Daniel to others. Also, we have asked him to add a deck to the porch room this summer.

We started remodeling our kitchen 2 1/2 years ago and the project was never completed due to unforeseen circumstances. Daniel stepped in and finished the job. He came every morning and reviewed the work to be done that day and was very pleasant to deal with. His crew was very hard working and dedicated to doing a good job. There were a few minor glitches with the painting and a crooked switch plate but there was no problem getting them to return and fix things. I gave a "B" for responsiveness only because there was a little delay in ordering some extra tiles that were needed. However, emailing requests did work well and we were very happy with the end result.

I called Daniel on a Thursday evening, leaving a message that I needed an estimate for renovations, the general scope of work and the time frame in which I needed them completed. He called me back the next day to let me know they were booked and wouldn't be able to meet my deadline. I was truly impressed that he called me back. I have contacted several companies about the different aspects of the work (plumbing, painting, etc.) and there has been more than one who hasn't bothered to call me back, or would call me back days or even two weeks later. How refreshingly courteous and professional to call back so quickly. If they are this responsive to someone who's business they won't actually be getting, I imagine they're even more responsive to paying customers.

Whether you are renovating a simple bathroom, to building a luxury outdoor retreat that will put the rich & famous in envy, we stop any nothing and leave no detail to chance when it comes to making your dream a reality. Ask any contractor if they guarantee their timeline. Ask any contractor if they guarantee no surprise change orders. Ask any contractor if their process (if they have one) breeds efficiency and a high attention to detail. People don't hire Pitt Brothers to get the best price. If you're looking for the "Lowest Price", call a handyman. If you're looking for the best contractor experience in the DMV, click that button to get a free estimate over the phone and we will surely not disappoint.
