Beware service scam! Here's how it works. You take your car in for a recall or simple service, they insist they need the car overnight and give you a loaner, and later that day they call you with hundreds/thousands of dollars of "preventive" maintenance. They pulled this on me and I watched as they did this to countless others. One poor older lady tried to argue and they wore her down asking her if she wanted to put her car/life at risk. After my free recall, here's what they wanted to do: $35 engine air filter (oil and filters recently cleaned) $155 battery (battery replaced about a year ago) $440 steering coupler (my mechanic said wasn't necessary) $640 belt tensioner (my mechanic said wasn't necessary) And of course the expensive items I would have no way of knowing if the car needed them or not. Total cost for FREE recall, they asked $1,270!!!!! Of course I said NO. This is as bad if not worse than the Wells Fargo scam of creating phony accounts. Then, to make matters worse, I got an automated message from them with a link to book my next appointment(!) and a line, " If your expectations have not been met, we would like to hear from you." BUT with NO way to respond. Really, find a reputable, honest local mechanic and avoid this dealer.
Response from Fitzgerald Auto Malls
"[Member Name Removed], We're sorry you feel this way about your experience. Safety and vehicle lifetime accountability is very important to us so there are times we must inform customers their vehicles safety has been compromised. Other times services are just recommended, such as yours. Our suggestions for your vehicle came from technicians that have been specially trained to work on Hyundai vehicles specifically, so though your mechanic may not agree, we stand by our original recommendations. We feel that we were courteous in offering you a complimentary rental vehicle during the time it would take us to complete five extensive open recalls on your vehicle. We weren't aware of any concerns you had before leaving our service department and a follow up email was sent to you as we do with every customer. This email could have been responded to by simply hitting the "Reply" or calling the number provided."

I did not get the work that they recommended done there. I am beyond the warranty. They could bring the prices down.

There are some thing that an dealer would do better than an general purpose auto shop. They do regularly scheduled Toyota maintenance, for 12,000 or 15,000 miles. If it looks like its serious, I will take it there. They also do an loaner car program there. It is more complicated factory maintenance, that is what I use them for.

They forgot to rotate my tires. Not a big deal, just do what
in the industry is a "Call Back". All I wanted is an apology
and the tires rotated. I was told, after arriving for my service appointment,
that they did a tire rotation. This I found odd because rear tires had much
more tread than the back tires. I showed this to the service writer, who said ?We
kept the better tires on the back to prevent fishtailing?. On a front wheel drive car you want the better
tires in front for traction and control. Did they forget it?s a front wheel
drive car?
I asked for the service manager who said that a tire
rotation was completed because they have it on video tape. If a tire rotation
was done why did the back tires have so much more tread than front? An hour and
half later I left the dealership. The service manager gave me $25.00, car wash,
and offered to detail the car in the future. He wanted to give me his business
card, but I said that wouldn?t be back. Why would I want more poor service?
All I wanted was an admission that they forgot
to rotate the tires, and that they were sorry that I had to come back. Is that
too much to ask? Clearly, Fitzgerald Hyundai doesn?t care about their customers

I use Fitzgerald Auto Mall (North Bethesda location) consistently for routine upkeep/maintenance on my Chrysler 300 Touring vehicle. I purchased the vehicle at the Lakeforest location in 2006 and had been taking the car there for years (for service), but after just one time (in 2011) I switched to the North Bethesda location. I have found the staff at the North Bethesda location to be attentive, responsive, and overall friendly. When I walk in the service department door, many of the staff recognize me and it feels I am being taken care of.

After repeated visits to solve a high operating temperature, low oil pressure problem, Fitzgerald suggested heavier oil believing that the oil pump tolerances were excessive. They even claimed this to be a fairly common defect in early New Beatles (2002). It didn't help and was a Rube Goldberg solution. Soon, within a week, the water pump failed when the plastic impeller disintegrated. Clearly it was the origin of the problem and was in some stage of failure when Fitzgerald was attempting to solve the problem.
After spending $2,000 for the initial service a $4,000 rebuild by another repair facility was required and to this day Fitzgerald refuses to acknowledge its error or even to respond to correspondence. After years of satisfactory relations we are off of them and have bought two cars from competitors since.

The salesman was very nice, we drove over to test drive the car and my friend was very pleased. She was going to wait until she had a bit more money saved before purchasing but she would have gone through Fitzgerald Hyundai had she gone through with her purchase.
She lost her job the following week and decided to hold on to her old car for another year or so.
