Air Duct Cleaning
The air duct treatment services were bought via LivingSocial Deal. After bait-and-switch, other services were added to the billing statement under the condition that before-and-after photos would be submitted as proof of services rendered.
As of 3 weeks following Envirocair / Envirocare visit and calling the company 4 times, I DO NOT HAVE ANY PROOF (pictures) THAT SERVICES WERE EVER RENDERED. The UV light was improperly installed and is falling from the AC, but I do not want Envirocare to return to fix UV light because:
1) Fear of another bait-and-switch
2) Lack of further patience with customer service
3) Fear of subsequent bad workmanship
I called Envirocair / Envirocare to request pictures, but the customer service representative was very hostile. Furthermore, the customer service representative stated that, as per written contract, verbal contracts could not be honored. However, the supervisor subsequently stated that she was submitting the pictures via e-mail (a week ago). Again, I have not received any proof that services were rendered.
Please refer to the Better Business Bureau for several similar complaints. Note the two names of this company: Enviroc air and Enviroc are.

Air Duct Cleaning
This is the worst experience I have ever had with a vendor- a
complete scam. They are actually a Maryland based company that appears to
have at least 5 different company names, 77 complaints with the Better Business
Bureau for their Maryland location http://www.bbb.org/washington-dc-eastern-pa/business-reviews/air-duct-cleaning/envirocair-duct-carpet-cleaning-in-kensington-md-235981697,
one star reviews on Yelp http://www.yelp.com/biz/envirocair-air-duct-and-carpet-cleaning-kensington,
and a long history of disappointed customers on other review sites.
Unfortunately no one else had yet reported them for Charlotte Angie's List or
we never would have used them.
We purchased two Living Social deals for $49 each that were extremely deceptive
marketing for a whole house air duct cleaning. When they arrive they said
that it's actually $49/system so we needed to pay for 5 systems vs two.
Not sure what about "Whole House" implies "per system," but
after an argument we negotiated that we'd pay an extra $49 and call it three
systems even though that was clearly unethical marketing practice to bait and
switch.
They first went to our rental property where they told our tenants that they
needed an additional $566 in sanitization and cleaning of the system to remove
mold and showed them photos of a dusty system and greatly alarmed our tenants
that they are living in a house with a moldy system. After further
research on EPA guidelines on mold and air duct cleaning we found this is a common
air duct scam, that there is no way for them to know whether it's mold by
looking at it- that it would have to be sent off for testing. http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/airduct.html
There was also a Dateline expose on this practice of scaring people into
un-needed expense.
When they arrived at our home I wanted the air ducts cleaned as I am 9 months
pregnant and wanted to feel that house is ready for a baby. The man I was working with was extraordinarily
condescending and misogynistic- even asked ?Where?s your husband? Does he own
the house? kind of questions.? We argued about the number of vouchers and
then they told us we needed the same sanitization process at this home and
showed me pictures of the "mold." I agreed to just spend the
incremental $349 with it being days away from my due date just not having the
time to get a second opinion or research this. After they did the work
and it came time to make payment, they wanted me to write a check for $200 to
one of the two men who had arrived and let him take an imprint of my credit
card for the remaining $715. He said he
just needs a check for himself to pay for his hotel and gas. I told him that having me write a check to an
individual was not a business practice that I was comfortable with, and I was
not comfortable with giving him a credit card imprint at 9:00 at night when I
couldn?t verify through a company during business hours that was the proper
payment procedure after he just made the shady request for a personal check. Him having Maryland license plates and
wanting me to pay for his hotel was a big red flag as well. He said they could not accept a check for
over $200, but writing a check to the company name was the only option that I
was willing to offer. At this point I
did not feel safe having these men in my home at night, particularly when I
went down to our basement after they left and realized that they had left the
basement door cracked open. I locked all
the doors and began to try to dig into their company history which was
difficult because the address listed on Living Social for Charlotte is an empty
apartment lot so it was hard to even find the parent company. When I did track them down in Maryland I was irate
at how badly I had just been ripped off.
To add insult to injury- this morning we received a repair request
from our renters that they had damaged the floor in the laundry room at our
rental property and had not told us. Not
only were we scammed, but they also damaged our property and we are looking for
recourse through any channel we can think of, which is not how I wanted to
spend the final days of my pregnancy.
Please learn from our expensive and stressful mistake.
