I had made an appointment for the job, but had trouble getting my insurance Road Side Assistance tow to show up on time. Bill was very accomodating, finally getting to the car as a night drop and in the shop the next morning. I asked him to do an oil change as well, since the car was due, already up on the lift and I had already bought the oil and filter. Again he charged me a very fair price for that.
I'm impressed by his integrity, honesty, reliability and flexibility. This is the kind of shop I have been looking for. Plus, if you're into wildlife photography, his waiting room will impress you, as he is an avid and active photographer.
This was a $79.95 big deal purchase. I think it ended up costing about $110. It ended up not being the service I had brought it there for. They told me they had ground down the rotors, but I felt they did not give me an exact definition of the problem to me. They just said they were grinding the rotors but I have a feeling it was something simpler and could have cost less. I change the brakes myself and I just wanted an inspection. They did not show me anything and did not tell me anything definitively. They did not change any brake pad, they said. They said they just turned the rotor and I did not get a chance to see if that was done or not. When I touched it I could not tell any difference. It might have just been offset a little bit and they could have told me there was just a little bit to be done and it would have cost less. I will not be going back to them if that is the question. I am not sure about what they did, this was just a suspicion. I would tell others to show them all the parts and show them the problem before they repair. They did not take me back into where my car was to look and see exactly what the problem was. It was hush, hush on whatever the thing was. I sat there waiting for the rotor to be turned and it was metal to metal somewhere that I heard on my car. I had to sit an hour or two while they ground the rotors. I have never been kept in the dark so much about a repair. It was repaired on the same day I brought it in. I waited a while before they repaired it. I do not feel that I was told what was going on.
On a previous repair on a different car of ours, the service writer at a Chrysler dealer had told us we needed to change the TIMING BELT on a car we owned. Bill Hamm showed us that our car actually had a TIMING CHAIN, not a TIMING BELT, and it wouldn't need to be replaced. And... even if we did have to replace the TIMING CHAIN that we did have, his price was half that quoted by the "official" Chrysler Dealer.
For an honest mechanic that THINKS and doesn't just swap out parts on a GUESS or a SALES QUOTA, Bill Hamm's is a smart choice who won't oversell you.
I brought my car in and all work was completed within 2 hours. They brought me in to explain (and show me) exactly what the problem was with the brakes. It was all very clear and helpful.
The little things that needed repairing (which were just as important to me!) cost almost nothing and the price for the brakes was significantly lower than I have paid at other shops.
All in all, this was a great find for me. I will be returning with all my car needs from here!
Another example:
My parents were visiting one summer and they had a horrible smell in the car. Took it to Bill and he said it was something dead (mouse, etc.). They worked for hours trying to find it and get it out. Never could BUT he recommended taking it to the dealer because he didn't want to tear the whole dashboard apart unnecessarily and the dealer would have better knowledge how to get in there. He didn't charge a cent.
They do pickup service in certain cases - distance and dollar value of service, which I find a wonderful thing! Much rather that then get a loaner, etc., etc.
NEVER hesitate to use Bill's service. I've recommended him to probably 50 people over the years.

Since the work was done in February, the brake pads still make noise from time to time and have even started squeaking a little bit (starting in October). I have not told Bill about this as I assume it is because of the inferior brake pads he installed. I did pay a lot less than I would have at the dealer, so I'm chalking this up to poor decision-making on my part since I approved the work.
The A/C compressor failed in July. I had to have my car towed to Bill Hamm's because the compressor incapacitated my car.
To his credit, Bill replaced the A/C compressor free of charge, including parts and labor. He also replaced my car's air filters and only charged me a few dollars for the new filters (labor was free). BUT...the A/C went out on me a couple of days after the new compressor was installed. I had to miss more work and take my car back to Bill's. He told me they had not attached something securely enough and fixed it for free.
Strangely, though, my Honda's alternator, battery, and timing belt also needed replacement shortly after the July A/C compressor re-replacement. For these repairs, I went back to the dealer instead of to Bill Hamm's.
Conclusion: Bill seems an honest auto repair owner and definitely does honor his warranties. His prices are also very fair. But, if you can't afford to miss too much work as I did during all of this, then you may want to insist on supplying your own (probably better quality) parts. If my time weren't so precious, I would take my car back to Bill for repairs, but I would research the parts and insist on better quality.
