"Hi [Member Name Removed] Thanks so much for the positive feedback. We take these reviews very seriously so we really appreciate hearing about your experience."
Selecting tile can be stressful because there are SO many options to choose from. I highly recommend calling ahead and getting a designer to work with you - even if you think know "exactly" what you want. They just make the process easier. I think you may pay a little more for the product because you're paying for this service, but I've been more satisfied with the final project because a designer helped me talk through the options. Kelly is great at both the "brainstorm" process and the "business" piece.
"We are so ecstatic that you had such a wonderful experience with us! If you ever need our services or products again, we'd love to work with you! Thank you so much."

We have just promoted Casey to Showroom Manager in our Alexandria store as she is an excellent designer and deserved the position. We always like to brag about our customers beautiful selections :) Thank you for shopping at ACI! We look forward to working with you again on your next project. -ACI Management"
My mixed feelings are based on several experiences. It began with my prior house when we were looking for tile to re-do the fireplace surround (and later, for the kitchen and hallway). We worked with Brad at the Bethesda location and he was patient and super-helpful. Ultimately, we decided to sell that house and so we never did the fireplace project. We bought another house that needed renovating from top-to-bottom, including three bathrooms, kitchen, entire lower level all needing tile. I went back to AC, this time the Falls Church store. It happened to be a Monday when all their designers are off, but that was fine as I just wanted to browse. I was given the name of one of their designers to contact. I e-mailed him once and called twice and he never got back to me. I called the Rockville location to complain (because I thought that location was the headquarters) and was told that yes, it was the HQ, and come to that location because they had a bigger selection. The person I was talking to said he was the owner and he'd work with me. We made an appointment, went up there and made some preliminary selections. The top choice was way too expensive so we asked for an estimate on the second choice. Never heard from him again.
Later, I received an e-mail from the owner who was following up on customers who hadn't purchased. I was super-impressed by this and so I wrote to explain what had happened (you guessed it - the guy we met with was not the owner - just a salesperson). The owner responded and I was so impressed by his response that we gave AC another chance. This time, we worked with Leigh Cassidy at the Rockville store. Overall, she was great but I was very upset when the store wouldn't stand behind us when the mfgr sent us some trim that they claimed was the same as the one we had wanted (but they were out of) and it turned out to be a totally different color. We were out hundreds of dollars on that one. It is for that reason that I won't return to AC.
It is my impression that these tile stores want to deal with designers, not homeowners. We had minimal help figuring out how much tile we needed. Had to do that work myself and was really nervous about having the right amount of each color. This was not unique to AC (we have dealt with two other stores and have had the same experience) but I think the sales people, who have a great deal of experience and are said to be designers, really ought to be more helpful in this regard. Also, none of these stores include delivery, which I think is just chintzy. Again, not unique to AC but it left a bad taste in my mouth. They knew we had two more bathrooms and a kitchen to do. You'd think just in the interest of repeat business, they would deliver.
UPDATE: My impression that this is a solid company that really cares about customer experience was confirmed just now. Apparently they read this review and decided that they would stand behind me as to the manufacturer misleading me about the colors. They have issued a store credit. I think that is the stand-up thing to do and will return to Architectural Ceramics. David Benson (VP and son of the founder) really gets it. I will return and will recommend Architectural Ceramics to others.
"[Removed member name] Thank you for providing feedback about your experience with ACI. I really appreciate this and it will certainly help us to improve moving forward. Thank you for giving us the second chance! I will relay your comments to Brad Ball who is one our more experienced designers in our Bethesda showroom as well. Regarding Falls Church, we have been in a period of transition over the past year. The employee that you mention is no longer with ACI. We recently have brought on two more senior level designers and with the two that are there now we should be fully staffed this summer. Again, this past winter was a tough transition for that showroom and we are not making excuses, but I am sure they did the best they could do. Regarding the Rockville showroom, the employee that you mention also is no longer with ACI as that is unacceptable for someone to classify themselves as someone that they are not. I apologize immensely for the fact that he did not respond to you or our manager did not respond in a timely manner. This is high priority for us and we have corrected this across the board. Regarding the miss-matched trim pieces you speak of. Certainly special order material for ACI per our terms and conditions is not returnable or exchangeable. This is just one of our policies. However, we do our best to try to help clients in the end. I researched my staff’s emails and found that sadly we did not try our best to get these miss-matched pieces for you returned to the manufacturer or exchanged for some type of credit. If at all possible to help rectify and turn your experience around for future projects I would like to offer a store credit for the trim pieces that did not match and your experience. We will reach out directly to you for this. Lastly I did want to comment on the delivery. We deliver every day in Maryland, DC and Virginia. We charge rates based on the size of the order. Please note that we have experienced drivers and we deliver with a lift gate as a curbside delivery. Again, I hope we can get your repeat business on some project down the road. I don’t know if you have finalized your bathrooms or not, but we would love to work with you on them. Please do let us know. Thank you, ACI Ownership"
The accent tile we ordered was made up of little pieces of natural stone. When it arrived some of the tile was a different than others, some were different colors, and some were falling apart. The accent tile was a mixed bunch of different qualities, and much of it did not match. When brought to the attention of Architectural Ceramics in Falls Church, it was handed from person, to person, and no one would take responsibility to fix the problem. After weeks, in order to resolve the issue ourselves, we had to use the tile in different sections of the bathroom in order to see less of a change in tile.
"Hi (Member Name Removed) We are very sorry you are unhappy with the material. It is absolutely unacceptable that our showroom did not take care of you when you brought in the product. Thank you for your feedback. We now have our Vice President of sales working out of this showroom for the next couple of months. Unfortunately the stones in the mosaic did not match due to the product being discontinued and only mixed lots were available. In order to show lot differences we normally provide physical samples of current material to show the variation in the natural material. Although we always advocate physical samples-some clients choose to approve this via photograph in order to expedite the process. The purchaser approved the photo so we shipped the material and it was installed. The mosaics that were falling off the mesh are part of the reason this material was discontinued. We are not sure if your contractor had given you any of this information-but reguardless our offer still stands to replace the material with a 50% discount."
The tiles were delivered as scheduled. We were very pleased with the service and product. Would certainly use them again.
Our problems started when the tile was "delivered". Because of the rush nature of the order we were told the fastest thing to do was to have it delivered to their Rockville warehouse and drive out there to pick it up ourselves. Rockville is not close to us, but since they said they couldn't get it to us in time otherwise, we were willing to do it.
Despite their promises, we didn't get our tiles until nearly a week after we were supposed to, with lots of headaches in between. As originally promised, the tiles arrived in Rockville a few days after we placed the order. I drove out to Rockville on Friday, to pick them up, only to find that they were the wrong ones. A.C. said they would take care of it and get them sent to our house via UPS on Monday. When my wife checked in with them later that day, they said the manufacturer was closed (it was Good Friday) but that they'd get them to ship it to us directly first thing Monday morning. On Monday we called A.C. again who said it was scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday. Tuesday came and went without a delivery. We called A.C. again first thing Wednesday, and they got us a tracking number which said that it had been sent out on Tuesday (not Monday) and was scheduled to be delivered on Wednesday. By the end of the day on Wednesday our tile installer had to leave because they hadn't arrived and he couldn't do anything without them. Finally the UPS folks notified us that they had "attempted delivery" at 5:03 p.m. and "no customer was there". Obviously UPS wasn't to blame for not wanting to leave them on our porch, but we work--and our tile installer can't sit around two days in a row waiting for a delivery. So we cancelled delivery for the next day and drove to Landover to pick the box up at UPS ourselves.
Beyond the time it cost us trying to track down this tile (driving out to Rockville and Landover) it also caused major delays on our bathroom project, which was set back nearly a week. Through all this A.C. was very nice, but basically seemed unable to get the tiles to us. It screwed over our tile installer -- who had other jobs he could have been doing -- as he waited for their promised delivery. Much of this might not be A.C.'s fault--the manufacturer seemed to have been a real problem for them. But at the end of the day they didn't do much of anything to make it right and we ended up shouldering all the responsibility for tracking the tiles down and getting them.
We placed the order and were contacted immediately so we knew when to expect the tile to come in. While waiting for the tile, we had to choose an installer as well as a contractor to make the shower enclosure. Leland was always available by email, and gave me several suggestions. The tile came in on schedule and there were no quality issues.
Leland was a pleasure to work with and a talented designer. I would welcome the opportunity to work with him again.
We chose one design and within 24 hrs, we had the new material back home and ready for installation by kitchen remodel company.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY. It may be a little expensive, but the final look of the design is PRICELESS.
"This looks beautiful!! Thanks for recommending us."
