"We are a small business locally owned and operated and appreciate and welcome any constructive criticism when warranted. Before this testimonial, we had a perfect A rating with Angie's List. Unfortunately, any client can write any testimonial on Angie's List without the facts being verified by Angie's List. THIS TESTIMONIAL WAS WRITTEN 6 WEEKS AFTER THE COMPLETION OF WORK AND TARGET RADON DID NOT RECEIVE ONE PHONE CALL OR EMAIL INDICATING ANY DISPLEASURE.....THE RESULTS FROM AN INDEPENDENT LAB WERE UNDETECTABLE LEVELS OF RADON. On the notion that there was a passive system, the pipe that the client (over the phone) indicated was designated for a passive system was in fact not, being there was other pipes tied into that pipe. That pipe turned out being their waste pipe. We did walk the entire basement (with client's wife) and checked the VISUALLY ACCESSIBLE piping. If it was discovered after completion of job, a quick phone call after the fact certainly could have resolved the issue. A passive cut in is actually easier and more profitable for us to perform, so we certainly would not want to do a full install if not needed. There was never a phone call indicating a contractor or licensed radon professional identified a passive system, just the client's belief. As far as the noise, the system was installed per NRPP and EPA specs as the test indicated ie undetectable levels. The noise heard, that some people are more sensitive than others in hearing at times, is typically the air discharging. I am sure the clients are not experts in the audible levels of radon fans and air discharging. However, a claim was made that the fan was noisy. Again, we are probably the most accommodating business owners, a simple phone call could have been made. We would have come back at no charge and tried to put a muffler or do something to make them happy. With regards to scare tactics, that is never our intent. This was a real estate transaction not a concerned homeowner. I am sure there was some disbelief in the affects of radon as well as some dismay in the last minute unexpected cost. We only answers regarding the affects of radon when asked. As far as being chatty, I recall the client bringing up a local current event which led in to a pitch and catch conversation. Angie's List is considered to be very reputable by the public and to give such a hurtful testimonial 6 weeks after the install without even calling us first to try to make things right is extremely disappointing. This client moved out of state, and gunned us down using a keyboard 6 weeks after the job was complete. This is our livelihood as well as our reputation. Unfortunately, with Angie's List (so I've learned by supervisors) anyone can write anything about anyone even if not warranted. THE BOTTOM LINE IS THE CLIENT HAD UNDETECTABLE LEVELS OF RADON."
Steve efficiently replaced the radon fan and ran a test. He and my husband could hear a gurgling noise from the basin where the radon pipe originated. Mystified, Steve opened the lid and 15 years worth of water that had been collecting exploded out all over Steve and our basement floor. It turns out, our sump pump, which was in the same basin, had not been working for decades and the water had been building up. My husband and I, from the west coast where no one has a basement nor a sump pump, had been told our house didn't have a sump pump so we didn't even know we had one nor that it wasn't working. Fortunately for us, Steve had one sump pump on his truck and was able to replace it and get it properly operating. Once all that water was out of the basin, the radon fan worked beautifully. And Steve was right, I never hear that fan, even when it is quiet at night.
If it hadn't been for Steve, we would have gone blindly on not knowing that water was building up under the foundation. Steve pointed out that we were very fortunate that our foundation hadn't cracked over the years from the freezing water. We were so fortunate that Steve knew how to replace sump pumps and could trouble shoot the whole situation. He ended up spending most of the day at our house, making sure everything was working properly before he left. And, he had to do it covered in rusty, dirty water from under our house. His dog, Target, patiently waited for him the whole time!
My husband and I opted to get the gauge that can tell you whether the radon system is doing its job - its a simple gauge but worth every penny to know that the proper pressure is being maintained in the system to remove the radon gas. We also bought the radon test kit that gets sent to an independent lab and received the great results back that our basement was significantly under the established safe level for radon gas.
A few weeks later, when we had more cold weather, we had a problem with the water in the sump pump exit pipe freezing, causing an ice plug and preventing the water from flowing out. We gave Steve a call and the next time he was in our area he cheerfully came by and fixed that problem, too, without charging anything.
I highly recommend Steve - he really knows his stuff and is very personable.
After arriving, Steve was very thorough with explaining everything about the system and anything else I had a question about. It's very obvious this guy knows his stuff. He's very knowledgeable about his profession but is still able to explain the technical stuff in a way that everyone can understand.
My Radon levels were between 10 & 11 according to a tester I had borrowed from a friend. After the system was installed the tester still read around 4 but the test kit that was sent to an independent lab came back at 2. That, I am very happy with. It's my understanding that readings tend to be higher in the colder months so I expect that number to go even lower once the weather gets warmer. Also, since I have a floating slab in my basement the area between the wall and floor was wider than the typical material used to seal it. While it is still reduces that amount of radon, it's obviously not as effective as a complete seal that can be obtained by using spray foam insulation. However, foam insulation is not recommend unless your absolutely, completely, without question, never going to get water in your basement. Currently, I have issues with yard drainage that causes one of my window wells to fill and leak during heavy rains. So, although I may consider the foam insulation in the future, I will hold off until I fix the water issue first.
Steve even took the time to call me after receiving the independent results back from the lab (which were emailed to both of us). He explained the reading and again took the time to answer any questions that I had.
Overall, I was extremely pleased with the service I received from Steve and highly recommend Target Radon! Great guy, very personable and extremely knowledgeable!!!
In the process of a home inspection performed for the sale of our home, it was noted that radon levels were unacceptably high. We contacted Target Radon and received an immediate call back. They came out the same day to perform an estimate. We found the price to be average. Target Radon assured us they could correct the problem. They installed the pipe and vented it out within a few hours. When retested, the radon levels were undetectable.
Pay attention to the guarantee. Their only guarantee is that the reading will be below 4 pci/L. This is the industry standard and is satisfactory for sale of the home, but he also explained to me that the dangerous cancer range is between 2.5 and 4 pci/L. I tried to negotiate the guarantee that it should read below the danger range of 2.5 pci/L, but he said they could not negotiate this. He does test the system with smoke to see if the draft is adequate and he did expect a reading in the fractions but would not guarantee this.
Overall, the radon test came back in the fractions so the system works better than what they would guarantee. They also made follow up calls, which I think the good contractors will do.
They will do the work as described and they will follow up and make appropriate corrections if needed. The job was also completed in a matter of hours which I though was quick. They are friendly and knowledgeable on the topic. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that the caulk event was an anomoly.
