After spending weeks looking at different rescue organizations and websites we were surprised at how many wanted $400 + up front with the application - it almost seemed like a big scam.  Additionally most did not have the dogs at a local facility, but instead were brokers representing other questionable groups that would ship the dog selected (or something close) upon receipt of your cash.  

A friend recommended CAWL and the difference was noticed on the first phone call.  They were more interested in finding their animals a good home then demanding money up front.  We drove 1 1/2 hours to their location to find well cared for, healthy and happy pets looking for a home.  The folks were very helpful, walking us around to meet all the dogs and explaining where they came from, their temperment,etc. - they knew the animals and the animals recognized and were happy to see the staff.  

This is the way it should be if you are looking for a pet - a good experience for the family with people that care about the animals and animals that have been well taken care of since they were brought into this rescue shelter.
