Fast forward to the beginning of December. We arrived home to find that our roof was leaking. We put in a call to Charis, assuming that they would repair the leak since they certified that the roof would be leak free for two years. Our mistake. A roof certification, according to Charis, is not a guarantee or warranty of the roof and that they would be happy to come out to see the leak and give us an estimate for repairs. This bothered us--what was the point of a certification if they don't stand behind it? Next, they came out to give us an estimate. After going on the roof, he determined that the repair would cost about $125. We thanked him and decided to get other estimates. After a thorough inspection by a very reputable company (A+ rating on Angie's List) we have been advised that we need a total roof replacement. We currently have four active leaks in our roof and rotting on the inside of the attic that is very obvious (even to the untrained eye). There are major issues with the way our roof connects to the back porch that is one of the main causes of our current interior leak. There is no way that the issues our roof is having occurred only in the last 5 months. Charis should never have certified this roof according to another professional opinion.
We called the owner to politely let him know about our utter dissatisfaction with his certification and handling of the aftermath. When asked if he had ever been in the attic to inspect it he said no, even though it says that he did on the very first line of the certification. All he did was go up on the roof and give it a visual inspection--which is exactly what a home inspector does.
Charis Contractors utterly failed in their roof certification and I caution anyone who wants to use them for this purpose or otherwise. They do not provide quality, professional service.

"We inspected Mr. (member name removed)’s roof and recommended that he install a new roof due to the obvious disrepair of the house but he stated that was not in his budget. The contract that was signed did not list “fix a leak”. We were contracted to address the soffits that had fallen down, replacing rotten fascia boards, reattaching the gutters and replacing the vent collars. All of the work that was listed within the contract was completed. Upon further investigation we found other areas that need to be addressed (hole in valley and below valley). This was not included in our original agreement and in order for us to fix this area we will need an additional $1,100 to complete the extra work. Sometimes when there is a roof leak there is more than one source. We understand that there are certain circumstances when homeowners have limited funds so we start with the obvious in an attempt to save the homeowner money from extensive repairs that might not need to be done at that time. We did the repairs that were agreed upon and even though the leak is still there it does not negate the fact that those repairs were necessary. Unfortunately in this case, the extensive cost that we were trying to save him from is unavoidable."
