The technician was baffled at first. Pulled the top panel on the oven to see the wires, but spotted nothing.
I mentioned that we had had the circuit breakers replaced (Federal Pacific panel), and he said that that definitely could be the problem. He opened up the breaker box (which required cutting some fresh paint and caulking around the edges, done very cleanly), took out his voltmeter, and quickly confirmed that the 110 volt circuit feeding the oven was fine but that the 220 volt circuit was putting out zero volts because that breaker had not been installed properly.
Not being an electrician, he did not offer to try to fix the breaker. However, he closed everything up and left everything as he had found it. However, his diagnosis proved to be 100% correct, as an electrician from the company that had botched the initial work confirmed shortly thereafter.
Very professional; would not hesitate to call again.
I particularly liked two things: 1) although I told him that the electrician had said we may need to replace the system, he did NOT take me up on that, although I am sure he would have made a lot more money with a total system replacement than a two+ hour repair; and 2) he asked me to call him if the repair did not work for any reason. He also said that, if he had missed something like the other two companies had missed, he would want to know about it. Some people say that kind of thing, but you can tell they don't mean it. Him, I truly believed. In any event, the temperature in our house is now a brisk 75 -- no longer a balmy 91 (I am not kidding!), so I doubt we'll have to call him back about this repair. You can bet, however, that I will be calling the A Team for all AC work from now on ... I cannot recommend them highly enough.
++++
I forgot to mention that I called Monday mid-day after the AC blew the fuse yet again Saturday evening. This was the hottest week of the summer thus far, and the friendly receptionist said she couldn't get anyone out to us on Monday (and sounded genuinely sad about it), but gave us a four hour window on Tuesday. They called and came right on time: in the middle of the window.
John was the most timely with scheduling an estimate and provided a fair, detailed explanation of costs. In addition, he was the only company of the 3 estimates to suggest I change my hot water heater from electric to gas to save money on an electrical box upgrade. This saved me a lot of money and I appreciated his thoughtfullness in thinking through this problem. During the estimate John spent a lot of time on how to take the duct work from the basement to the attic to minimize disruption and to give me an idea of what I should expect. He was honest and straightforward with exactly what he could predict and what he would have to figure out once the job was started.
Once the contract was signed and financing approved, John and his men were starting the work about 1 week later which we were delighted with. They predicted the job would take 3-5 business days, they started on a Thursday but chose to come in and finish the job on Saturday of a holiday weekend instead of waiting until Tuesday to complete. Also, we have radiant heat in our house so instead of having 2 thermostat's (1 for heat, 1 for a/c) John set us up with a new thermostat and programmed it for our heat and A/C. He also installed the 2nd thermostat for our upstairs zone on the second floor which we find to be delightful since we don't have to go downstairs to adjust the temp when we are upstairs. We were extrememly satisfied with the duct work they installed in our basement. We have very tall ceilings and they were able to keep the duct work very high (mostly b/w the joists) so that if we ever want to finish our basement we could easily maintain 8 ft ceilings throughout.
In summary, I could not have been more satisfied with the A-Team with the A/C installation in my house. The process from start to finish was better and faster than we expected and felt we got an amazing value for the cost. The A-Team will be my go to company for all my heating and a/c needs and I will be buying a maintenance plan from them next to maintain my seperate heating and a/c systems. I highly recommend this company to anyone!!!
