First of all, this man stood me up on the first appointment.  He came up with some lame excuse.  I remember my brother saying to me, ?If he?s doing this to you now while trying to make a good impression, what?s it going to be like later.?  I should have listened to his advice. Third time he was scheduled to come out...again no show.  He explained that he was with a company for 25 years and decided to start his own business not too long ago.  He told me that he's a one man show:  sell, install and schedule appointments and that's why he can bid lower than most but asked that I be patient.  It made sense and I wanted to give him a chance.  WRONG... After I decided to go with him, and because of his missed several scheduled appointments I asked him to put in the contract that he has 10 days from the date on the signed contract to install it and if not installed the cost would be reduced by $1,000 and he agreed but changed the dollar amount to $400. After he received the down payment his responsiveness went downhill, he stood me up on 6 occasions never showed at all when scheduled & most of the time never called to tell me he wasn't coming.   He always had different excuses.
Secondly, I ordered a gas insert with remote, doors and accessories.  When he installed my gas insert, I didn't see my extras (doors & accessories) so, I asked him, "Where's my doors and accessories."  He told me that he forgot his fault and he would order them, and be back on Tuesday  and would also install the remote then because he would need to take it apart might as well do everything all at once.  At this point the fireplace was working and my check was already filled-out to pay for the remaining balance due.  What I should have done and what I did was two different stories:  I should have asked for the check back and only paid him half of that and pay him the other half when everything was installed?I didn?t and I trusted him.  I just figured he was overwhelmed and even though he missed appointments, he always apologized and would eventually show up. 
Half hour after he left the pilot light went out.  This happened several times and he made numerous attempts to fix it but, he truly had no clue as to what was wrong.  I continued to have the same issues: fire going out and pilot light going out. I've made several attempts to get in touch with him and he just ignores my calls/texts. 
So, I reached out to MD Home Improvement Commission and found out he doesn't have a license.  To make matters worse the person who referred him to me found out he checked himself into rehab.  At this point, I'm done dealing with him.  There are times when a person needs to admit that they?ve been had and I was had.  Besides, there's not much that one can get from a person with a drug addiction.
Good news and $500 later I ordered doors (passed on accessories) & reached out to Hearth Products to install it and fix my issues. It works beautifully & the doors look great!
