Contractor, Vito Tunzi began the job in mid-Aug. '09, by digging for 4 footings. He built the deck and had it supported on temporary supports (no footings poured yet). During heavy rains the temporary supports slid into the adjacent holes that had been dug for the footings, but not yet filled. The deck pulled away from the house where it was attached. He states that he re-propped the deck (via telephone, since I was out-of-state). When I asked why he was not pouring the footings, and why the deck was propped up for 1 month, he responded: " well, really, it's only been 13 days when you account for the week-ends and the Labor Day Holiday". Other excuses he offered for delaying the work: "Well, it's such a long drive to your place" or "yesterday was my birthday". Another excuse: "I'm gonna need heart surgery". He never obtained the required inspection. I found out later that an inspection was scheduled, but the plans were not made available, so inspection FAILED. When finally completed, in Oct. 2009, I expressed my concern to Vito Tunzi, that finish work looked sloppy and not properly done. Caulking was spotty, rain guard flashing over the doors was crimped and mangled. I have had to have much of the work done over. This spring I had the footings dug up and inspected. They FAILED the inspection and had to be re-poured. Vito Tunzi used carriage bolts, which I will have to replace w/ HEX through-bolts. Flashing does not appear to be installed properly along the house where the deck is attatched to the house. It will have to be retro-fitted properly. This contractor seems cluelless about building and unaware of the "permitting" and "inspection" process. This was definitely a bad experience.
