I had a Bryant 10 SEER HVAC installed in 2002 that had a coil leak. I decided to replace rather than repair because R-22 refrigerant is being phased out. I shopped and got estimates from multiple contractors through Angie's List. One quoted me 16K dollars to replace my unit with a 16 SEER Bryant Unit. Another quoted me about $9200 for a 16 SEER Carrier unit. Another quoted my about $7200 for a Rheem Unit. All units came with a 10-year warranty on parts. The Bryant and Carrier quotes also include a 10-year warranty on labor. I continued shopping and found Mr. Richard Sgro, an independent HVAC contractor (HVAC Master License # 40302) who quoted me $4500 for a entirely new Goodman 16 SEER HVAC with electric heat backup. Mr. Sgro can offer good prices because he is a sole proprietor who does not maintain a storefront or sales force. I researched the Goodman Brand (same as Amana) and it uses the Copeland compressor the same as on much more expensive Carrier units. The system is not a communicating system, but I'm OK with that because I intend to control using a smart thermostat that was separately installed. A 10-year warranty on labor would be nice (Mr. Sgro provides a 1-year warranty on labor), but I can purchase a 10-year labor coverage (up to $800) for a defective compressor for $100 through the manufacturer. I don't seen how the more expensive units, even if more reliable can justify based on payback. All in all, an outstanding value.
Description of Work: The contractor replaced my old/malfunctioning HVAC unit with a Goodman 16 SEER Heat Pump/AC unit including 4-ton two-stage scroll compressor and a brand new air handler.
