About us

Owner-operated, use of Independent Contractors on certain services. Charges a flat rate. Travel charges may apply. Warning- Growing Pains! As of 10/1/11, Angie's List has been so good to me, and given me so much business that I have to do something I do not want to do; I have no choice, I must hire employees and/or use independent contractors. Please understand, I don't want to, I have to. What that means is that we may not provide the most excellent services that I have always tried to provide, because it may not be me that comes knocking on your door. However much I try to teach and train my employees, they just will not meet up to my expectations, not even my own son! So, I want you, my prospective customers, to know that I am only a phone call away... If for any reason you are not satisfied with our services, please feel free to call me personally (ask for Dave) and let me know whatever the issue is and I will take care of it. Thank you for your understanding... Dave Kilpatrick, Owner.

Dave is very informative and knows chimney systems exceptionally well. He has a long time experience and knows what he is talking about. He is honest, to the point and will help you understand what you need to know. I would recommend him anytime.

His work is great. I've replaced one unit and now just need him for a wood burning stove. He and his son provide a good service at a good price and they always leave the place cleaner than when they started.

This company was contacted by the seller.  First, they sent the final report to the seller instead of us. Our realtor had to collect it and get it to us after the company started demanding payment. In the report, they stated that everything (EVERYTHING) was in satisfactory condition, that that the direct connect insert and the basement flu were in "Excellent Condition" and that both flus were "clean" and  "ok to burn." Over the course of last winter, my husband and I may have lit 7 fires, max. This week we had a chimney sweep/inspector with excellent Angie's List ratings come out to clean the chimney before winter. The guys who came out last week found and photographed problems (mainly water damage and damaged masonry) and showed me how my chimney is basically no longer firmly attached to my house. Granted, we had a lot of snow this winter, but the professionals who looked at the house this week indicated that there were things done to "cover up" the damage and that it did not occur over a 10-month span . .  . although I'm sure the snow did not help.  We have learned our lesson. We are going to have to have our chimney reconstructed . . . kind of funny considering it was in "excellent condition" less than a year ago.  I would strongly suggest people NOT USE THIS COMPANY as they are unprofessional at best and possibly crooks.
Response from 2 Hats Chimney & Ducts
"This is not an accurate accounting of the event. I was there to inspect and evaluate the chimneys on behalf of the seller. He pointed out to me the two fireplaces and chimney flues that he had. No serious issues with either fireplace, however, later on, the buyers wrote this review, giving the grade of F. It seems that there was a third flue for the HVAC system that I was not made aware of, and that is what this was all about. I was not given permission, nor did I know there was a third flue in the house I was to inspect. And , yes, the third flue was in extremely poor condition and had water damages to both the flue and the inside of the house. When the buyers finally called me to complain, I immediately came out to re-inspect. It was then that I determined there was the third flue, and I had not inspected it. So, yes, at the time they would have been correct in their grade thinking that I had inspected it too, but it was not a fair grade because I did not even know it existed. I have since gone back to the house, gave them a great deal on not only making the repairs on the third chimney flue, but also did some other work for them at the same time. We compromised on the work for the third chimney, and when I left, they were very satisfied with what was done. So, why has it taken me so long to respond? In 2012 or thereabouts, Angie's List flagged this entire account, because I was not licensed in the state of Maryland (the work that I had been doing did not require licensing... but Angie's legal department thought otherwise). The flags were not removed until recently, when I finally became licensed, but during the time of "suspension", I never looked at Angie's List; I never knew the "F" existed until I sent a copy of the license to Angie's List. The bottom line is simply this: the buyers graded an F, with correct reasoning AND I DON'T FAULT THEM ( they had the water problem), but they did not communicate with me beforehand. SINCE THEN, THEY HAVE NEVER REVISED THE GRADE. While I like the fact that Angie's List grading is done exclusively by the customers, when mis-communication occurs it is difficult to effectively respond appropriately. I am very happy that business are only allowed to respond to a review, thus they cannot write their own. That makes Angie's List grades that much more important. Please feel free to call if you'd like further explanation to this response. Dave Kilpatrick"

Honest, reasonable charge, friendly and informative. They put a chimney cap on and I can't really inspect the work but I have every reason to believe they did a fine job. Glad I found them.

Overall, the experience was excellent.  Dave (the owner) arrived on time to conduct the estimate.  His inspection was thorough, and he spent time speaking with me about the issues that needed to be addressed.  Additionally, he encouraged me to get other estimates to ensure I had complete information before making decisions about repairs.  I followed his advice and got another estimate.  The second estimate came in lower than Dave's; however, we felt so confident in Dave's assessment that we negotiated a lower price with him - which was still higher than the second estimate - but we felt his services were worth the additional cost.  Dave's inspection report was extremely thorough (3 pages single spaced), and he returned it to me quickly.

Dave subcontracted to Kenwyn for the repairs.  We were very happy with Kenwyn's and his son's service.  They were very courteous and efficient.  Additionally, they took extra steps like installing the new fireplace doors we had purchased to ensure the fireplace was fully functional by their departure.  Dave visited the week following the repairs to ensure work was completed satisfactorily.

I highly recommend this company and have referred them to family and friends already.  I plan to continue to use their services for annual cleanings.

Called Dave to inspect and repair chimney of 40-year-old house after home inspection stated that both chimney and furnace flu needed re-lining and chimney to be rebuilt from roof-line on up to the tune of thousands of dollars.  Dave inspected the chimney and found that the chimney flu did not need re-lining and the chimney could be repaired & weatherproofed, rather than rebuilt - this saved us money and maintained the rustic charm of the existing chimney.  He was very thorough in his inspection and taught us everything we would need to know about chimney maintenance, safety and structure.  His partner, Ken, did a masterful job of repairing our chimney - he replaced the individual bricks with aged ones, then sealed/waterproofed the brickwork - our chimney is safe and maintains its' charming appearance.   He also re-lined the furnace flu and placed the chimney cap.  Dave returned to replace our worn-out fireplace damper and cleaned our chimney.  Although the price for each service was a little on the higher side of other estimates, his creativity and knowledge of alternative fixes saved us money in the long run, and the quality of the work was well worth the price charged.

I initially contacted Dave via email to find ask his pricing. He responded quickly with the information I requested. When I called to schedule an appointment he was pleasant and easy to work with. Dave was prompt, polite, and clean. He was honest and only charged a small inspection fee.

I found them on Angie's List. He was here and going and all he did was look at it real fast and said that everything looked okay. I don't know whether I really liked that situation or not. The price was good but it seemed to me that he could have done some more. He said it looked okay, so I guess I have to take his word for that. He got here not too long after I contacted him.

Dave was very informative.  He gave us a lot of good information.  He directed our attention to any potential problems and taught us how to use our fireplace.  He was a really nice man to work with.  He was thorough, professional, and prompt.

This was our second chimney cleaning with Two Hats.  Dave and his son are extremely courteous, prompt, thorough, and likeable.  They moved the furniture and kept everything very clean.   He gave me a discount as a repeat customer, and explained how often I needed to have the chimney cleaned depending on how often we used the fireplace. Last year he also cleaned my long and hard-to-get-to dryer vent.   I'll definitely recommend them and have them back next year!

We scheduled 2 Hats Chimneys for November 18.  Dave was prompt and professional.  We were very pleased with Dave's knowledge and he inspected the chimney and resolved our immediate concerns.  The work was completed the same day and Dave advised that we would want to consider two additional improvements for the chimney at some future date.  We will definitely call on Dave in the future for any chimney concerns.

Every aspect of this was painless. They camp out and measured (I didn't need to be home) and then a week later, they arrived right on time and installed the new cover.  Their price was competitive with some of the other companies that we received estimates from and significantly less expensive then some others for the exact same service and product.

We were extremely happy with their service and professionalism. Our job required more work than expected and they completed  everything necessary to make our fireplace insert operate effectively. Following the work, the process was explained to us in detail.

He was really good. He didn't push; he could have said that we needed to do the cleaning now but he didn't, so we trusted him on that. He seemed to be on the level and wasn't going to do unnecessary work. He was trustworthy. He didn't do any actual work; he gave us advice. His prices seemed reasonable. We will absolutely call him back in the spring.

Dave showed up on time and ready to work.  He was thorough in his work and in his explanations regarding the nature of his labor.  We had not cleaned our chimney in 8 or 9 years and it needed attention.  Dave not only cleaned the chimney, but made recommendations about what specific  action(s) we needed to take in the future to prevent the creosote build up that we had.  When finished, he completely cleaned his work area.  We'll have Dave back again.

I contacted 2 Hats via e-mail, and we arranged a time for an inspection and estimate via e-mail and phone.  He arrived on time, and brought his own binoculars to inspect the chimney.  He explained the issues with the chimney, and indicated that it did not need major repair or replacement (which we were told by other service providers).

He prepared the estimate on a pre-printed form designed just for chimney and fireplace work, and indicated what was OK and what needed work.  This form was impressive because no one else had a form like it.  It is quite detailed and the graphics are easy to understand.

His masonry repair team arrived as scheduled, and completed the work on time.

I will recommend 2 Hats to family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, and anyone else who asks.

Would that every service provider was as experienced, professional and thorough.

Excellent service  Took several calls to get a call back, but that is because he is a one man operation and this is the busy season.   I had put off having chimney cleaned because of my frustrating experiences with other  services.  Dave expained everything first and what he was going to do.  Turns out, previous  installer only installed 5 feet of stainless steel flue and creosote was forming and falling around partial flue.  No high pressure sale , said I could wait a few years, but this is my house and the estimate of 24 feet of lining for $100 per foot is a lot cheaper than a burned down house!  Dave  recommends another expert to do the relining so you know it is not a scam to get more money in his pocket.  Glad I did it, when wood stove was pulled out to complete cleaning and relining, hunks of creosote the size of baseballs fell out.  Definitely a fire hazard.  Do not let the sometimes slow return call frustrate you- well worth the wait!!!!

Owner of the company promptly scheduled an appointment and followed through right on time. He inspected the chimney and made his recommendations and presented his  price. I thought a bit high but if it fixed the problem, then worth it. We both agreed and he had his technicians here the next week. Very professional and thorough. So far, three months later and no problems.
