The RCN serviceman showed up on time and completed the installation. He was nice, polite and did a good job. Everything has been fine so far, and my daughter has not had any problems.
Description of Work: I needed to have internet service installed for my daughter's apartment. I live in Atlanta and she lives in Maryland. She is autistic so I needed to make the arrangements for her. I spoke with a representative on the phone who was very helpful. He went out of his way to make sure that I had everything that I needed, and he answered all of my questions. He set up a three way call between my daughter, me, and him to get permission from my daughter for me to talk directly to him. He did all of this at our convenience, not his. My daughter has not established credit yet, so I had to send in some information to the RCN business office. He gave me his personal information so that I could contact him if there were any problems, and he even called me after hours to make sure that everything was taken care of on the account. He also arranged to have an RCN serviceman install the internet at my daughter's apt rather than a sub contractor. I really appreciated him taking the time to talk with me and to help get everything set up on the account. He really went out of his way to make sure that I felt comfortable with the entire situation. It would be nice if all companies that we deal with these days offered the top notch service that I received from RCN.

Service was restored. I have also had service when the rest of the neighborhood did not. When someone has had to come, it was never longer than the next day. I have been with them for about 13 years. Though the cost is a little higher than others, my appreciation for the service and consistency has been well worth it. I have bundle service with them since they were Starpower.
Description of Work: Restored service by phone. Usually a power boot is all that is needed when service goes down. Last year my phone line was cut by the gardener, I still had my service restored quickly. The date I gave is only a guess. I am just happy to be able to share my experience(s) with RCN.

We had 3 estimates for soundproofing our basement apartment and ended up choosing Don Roberson because of his straight forward approach and price. His crew showed up and Mike supervised the work being done. Mike was very professional and ensured a job well done. The cut 4" holes between the ceiling joists and blew in insulation into two rooms in our basement. The insulation was packed tightly and they laid plastic out prior to any work being done. They cleaned up meticulously after themselves and replaced the drywall holes. They completed the work in a timely matter and did a great job. I would definitely use them again and would not hesitate to refer to any family or friends.

I think the service provided by RCN when something goes wrong (a rarity) is excellent. I think RCN charges more than they have to but I usually have this complaint about just about any product or service. The folks I get on the phone are very pleasant and do not get all caught up in my drama (i.e., anxiety, frustration, etc.).
Description of Work: I get hi-speed internet and TV via cable. I pay roughly $95.00/mo. I recently dropped my land-line in order to use a cellphone only. RCN does not provide cellular service, only land-lines.

I was a RCN customer for over 5 years, when I was unhappy with the quality of service and the fact that my internet was constantly going out, I spoke to a "customer service representative" and when I told her I could go to a new company and get a much better deal she told me, "well then you might be better off doing that". Clearly the company doesn't care about maintaining current customers and keeping them happy. I was paying $255 a month for cable internet and phone! Even when my package was reduced to a slower internet speed, no movie channels or upgraded cable channels my bill was still over $200. I had decided to remove my internet/cable account and try keeping my landline phone with RCN. When I made that switch, conveniently my phone stopped working a day later. I called to schedule someone to come fix my phone but they showed up at the house without calling to confirm or give me a 30 minute notice, which they told me they would do when I scheduled the appointment. I had to cancel the appointment. I think that their phone operators take multiple calls at a time because all they do is put you on hold to "check on that", or to "confirm with manager". In the end I canceled my whole account by going to the store to return all my equipment.
Description of Work: I had a cable/internet/phone package with RCN for over 5 years.

The installer was on time and professional, and the installation charge was half that of the main competitor. My internet works great.

A new deck in the back of our house required that the cable box and cables be repositioned. I called RCN at the time of the deck construction and informed them that the box was hanging on the fence and the cables laying on the ground along our driveway. We hoped that proper placement would fix the longterm trouble we'd had with our cable service (digital break-up that rendered all HD channels unwatchable), but were willing to deal with one problem at a time. My husband stayed home from work to accomodate their 12-hour appointment window, but no technician ever arrived. We called and scheduled another date, this time a Saturday, with another 12-hour window and again, no one showed up. On our next bill, we were charged for both technician "visits." It took multiple phone calls, with many transfers and being on hold for 20-minute stretches of time to get them to remove the charges, but we still had the problem of the dangling cable box. I spoke to at least two customer service reps from different time zones who insisted that someone had come to our house on both occasions. They claimed they could not access the problem even though anyone could walk right up to it whether we were home or not. Last month we learned after receiving our bill that our contract had run out so our bundled package invoice (cable, internet, phone) spiked up from $187 to $300. When I called to get their "member rate" I again asked that someone come out and fix the box in the back of the house. Yesterday, someone actually showed up and without ringing the doorbell, began to cut the box down. When my husband confronted him, he said that he was taking the box because that's what was on his service order. When he looked at the service order again, he realized his mistake, but said he couldn't re-wire the box without a ladder truck. He promised that he would come back again today some time between 8-11 am. He never showed. At 11:45, I walked out the front to door and saw an RCN ladder truck slowing in front of my house. To my surprise, the truck kept going, turned the corner and drove away. The cable that he cut yesterday? That was our phone line. When I called to find out if, or when, someone would come out and rectify the problem, I was told that a technician came to our house but found no one home. We're now prisoners in our house AGAIN, waiting for a technician who will never show up--and if he does--won't do the work.
Description of Work: The service NOT performed is rewiring the cable box in the back of our home.

The services purchased through their consumer channels was OK. Support was nothing special. However, the services I purchased through their business group were good and had excellent support. The responsive business support with people who really know how to address issues make this an outstanding service. My comments are related to the business service I have with RCN. I also think the Internet routing is better. On the consumer Internet service I had trouble with VOIP. On the business plan, I don't have those problems.
Description of Work: I use this service for Internet, cable TV, and phone. I have used the service through their consumer channel and their business channel.

The service includes the Internet, home networking, basic cable, digital, RCN HDTV/DVER converter box, and all the movies all the time. I've had RNC for some time. It used to be Starpower or RCN bought Starpower. I have never had a problem with any of their bundled services. Any time I have had a problem it has been resolved promptly. The most recent event was a call and request from me to reduce my cable bill. It was really kinda out of control. That phone call resulted in a significant reduction in my overall bundled services bill. It is important to note that although my monthly bill is $168, $24 of that amount is taxes, fees and charges that are required by Federal, State or local government.
Description of Work: I have bundled services with RCN for High-Speed Internet, Cable, and telephone.

The appointment was not set until 6 days later and the appointment time slot from 9 to 5 and I had to be there. They did not show up and then I was told the window from 8 to 9. They did not show up in that window at all. They gave me a new service window of 3 to 5. The tech came and was there for only 10 minutes and never came in the house or knocked on the door. I really didn't need to be there. There is horrible communication between customer service and the techs. I'm paying for premium service and not receiving premium service. As a result of this experience, I am switching providers.
Description of Work: We lost power after a storm and then our phone didn't work. They had to come out and repair a line that went into the house.

We are still waiting for a resolution. I have asked for someone in authority to contact me but they never have.
Description of Work: We are having a problem with our on demand. We have been trying to get a technician to come to the house. At first they would ask us to try things ourselves which we did. We found though that every time you call they ask you to do these things before they will even talk about anything else. Then they tried to fix the problem from their end. Again every time we call we have to go through 30 minutes of menus and procedures. We had to threaten switching to Comcast to get a supervisor to agree to send a technician. He missed the appointment. We asked to be the first appointment of the next available window which they refused to guarantee. We have been without this service for 4 weeks and now other things are going wrong. We called to report these so the service tech coming to the house would not be surprised and they forced us to go through the procedures again and will not guarantee the tech will work on the additional problems. The biggest problem seems to be they have a script for the phone support and they can not do anything else. They all have the same very thick accents and speak very quickly. My phone logs the time spent on every call and so far I have spent 5 hours an 33 minutes on this problem.

OK except for 3 or 4 periods of downtime. You have to call and request credit for the downtime or they charge you full price. Except for the downtime, the service was good. Very long waits for calls to customer service. That's why I gave them 'C's for responsiveness, punctuality, & professionalism.

OK, with the exception of several periods of downtime, the service was good. The internet response speed was good. They don't automatically issue a credit to customers for downtime, however it must be requested shortly after the occurrence. I liked the McAffee security package that comes with it, with one exception: if you require tech support from McAffee, you must pay for it. Be prepared for long wait times for phone support for RCN, that's why I gave them 'C's for responsiveness, punctuality, & professionalism.

RCN's service has been very good, with relatively few outages. Their installation was very professional, and their technical support is good. They talked me through setting up our e-mail accounts, and helped when I was setting up a home network. When there was a neighborhood-wide problem with their service, they solved the problem relatively quickly.
