The stump was in a corner, roots under and lifting 3 fences, with a 6-ft diameter, 2-ft hole on the back side. Some rusty old farm-fence was embedded in the stump. "Yes" his crew could take care of it, he said. We tentatively planned for next Monday.
I coordinated with all of my neighbors, and contacted another Handyman friend, to remove the old chain link fences, and replace them once the stump was cleared. Proposals were reasonable, and due to forecast rain we rescheduled everybody ahead, for the coming Saturday. My handyman removed most of the fences the day before, leaving one (dog-yard) fence over-night.
On Saturday everybody was there early. The last fence was removed as Mac's crew was clearing and chipping the brush. They chainsawed the trunk down to the root base (avoiding the embedded old farm-fence). Then the "Stump Grinder" (an awesome machine) began "eating" the stump. It took a lot of work to grind the stump into chips. The primary operator was very skilled with both the Grinder and a Bobcat front-bucket loader. He worked around the stump, "sawing" deep into the soil to cut deeper roots.
Finally the stump core broke free and was out. Using the Bobcat, the root hole was filled and the entire area very carefully graded smooth. They also grubbed-out some Brush roots under one of the removed old fence-lines. While the crew raked the area, another previously left stump was ground out and it's area leveled.
After Mac's crew left my Fence guy began replacing the fences. Overall a tough stump removal and clean-up went very well.
I then had Mac give me a detailed proposal for some additional routine maintenance trimming. This included removal of dead wood, removal of several unbalanced major limbs, and general clean-out of excess overgrowth. I also had one stump ground and backfilled, and some older brush chipped for removal. His proposal was sufficiently detailed that we could add or delete items if necessary during the work. (Things happen, we know that). Since his proposal was competitive and their previous work good, I issued the go-ahead immediately.
For most of the work the crew climbed into the trees, dropping or using safety ropes to carefully lower dangerous limbs to the ground. It was hard skilled work, but well done. We had some limbs previously stacked ready for removal, but decided that we wanted all the chips left for mulch -- no problem. They chipped into the truck and at the end dumped a large pile for us to use. We also decided to keep some of the logs for firewood, cut to size and stacked for drying. No problem. They hauled other logs and heavy limbs away.
At completion, Mac and I reviewed the work; and I was satisfied with both work and final cost. Mac was exceptionally responsive, his crew competent, skilled, safe and conscientious and his equipment adequate to the job. I would recommend Mac & Son for emergency or routine maintenance.
Another tree started showing signs of distress, leaning noticeably towards a neighbor's fence, shed and house. I'd been soliciting proposals for general tree maintenance and clean-up. When Mac returned my phone call, I explained the new situation and he met me on-site 3-hours later that evening. We discussed various options and he have me a proposal to remove 2 adjacent trees and chip our large pile of branches the first tree. I accepted his proposal as fair and reasonable.
The next morning at 9:30 a crew from another job arrived and began chipping the brush. Their Climber rigged and began removing the worst limbs from the leaning tree -- now over the fence and shed. They were obviously skilled, safe and knew what they were doing. By Noon the tree was safely cut back from doing any damage. After lunch they fell both adjacent trees, chipping the limbs and hauling off the trunk-wood. They dumped the truck full of chips, which we wanted for our own mulch and ground-cover.
I'm thankful for Mac's exceptional response, both immediate inspection and proposal, and his skilled crew's immediate attention to a situation that could have become much worse.
I contacted three companies and Mac and Sons, provided the best quote for the large stump and a smaller stump.
Mac and Son's was very professional. He called to let me know that the crew was running behind and would not arrive at the appointed time. The crew performed the work and left. Mr Mac came out later to inspect the work, and ensure that I was satisfied. I was extremely satisfied with Mac and Son's.
