Just our luck; the day after Snowzilla our kitchen drain got clogged. After calling other handymen, I found Mr. Adams. He was one of the few businesses to answer the phone, return calls and take jobs two days after the blizzard. I explained the problem and told him that our street had been plowed. He said he could come by after 12:00 and showed up around 12:30. Turns out the drain was a clogged about 20-30 feet down. He cleaned it out within 30 minutes and was on his way. He was professional (gave some good advice about our drain pipes and how they contributed to the problem) and courteous. I'll call him again for plumbing and other needs.
Jim arrived promptly at 10am. Though he was provided a detailed list of what was to be done by floor and supplies were laid out at each work area, he requested a work though to view each work request. 30 minutes later he was ready to work. Before any work began I wanted to validate that the 2 hours began at 10:30am. Jim stated that "he arrived at 10am, but he guessed that he could start the clock at 10:30". (Well, if he didn't I was not going to have him step another foot through my house). Not wanted to waste time to find another handyman I let Jim do want he could on the list (as he stated that he did not do thermostats or phone switches).
We got through most of the list but bath fans were not touched as Jim continuously reminded me that the bath fans could take a couple hours if there were complications. I really was just focus on the two hours that I was paying for and getting as much work done as possible. During the last 30 minutes there were issue with the occupancy sensors (he switched the wires) so he had to redo the work as we neared the end of the two hours. I did not appreciate the fact that he did not have consideration for doing the job correctly, but merely stopping right at two hours. As he stated "well I don't not what to tell you" (referring to the switches that worked before be touched them) as he was packing up his gear. Well the correction did work, not that he cared as he was so busy telling me who to make the check out to...I paid cash (no need to extend the relationship, which he was gitty about and promptly passed me a business card. After he left I noticed that the doorbell was installed upside-down...the sticker stated "install this end down"...uggghhhh! Well, at least it's over
While it was a routine installation, two things came up that he handled well: First, the wax ring kit that I had purchased came with plastic or nylon bolts, and one of those bolts sheared off during the installation. He had his own kit with him with metal bolts, that worked as expected. Second, the plate onto which the toilet gets bolted was broken. He weighed the options and just put in a simple screw to support the plate, which was a quick, economical, and effective solution.
The only small issue I had was that he left before things were 100% cleaned up. I believe he did this in order to save me money (the cleanup would have taken some more time and would have added to my bill), and he might have even explained this to me (he did say that we had gone a bit over an hour already but he wouldn't charge me for the little extra time) but not in a way that it clicked for me. Truly not a big deal.
He came prepared, was courteous and easy going, and did a great job.
Jim's drywall skills were excellent. I received estimates from several who I felt had no clue what they were doing or were charging an absurd amount. Jim's paint job was neat, clean and precise. Not a drop of paint on the flooring anywhere.
Because he did not need to sand and paint the floor in the kitchen, he did reduce the price some for that room.
All in all, Jim rocks! His work was beautiful. I was extremely busy at work and could not be there while he worked as I usually am with others. He said the work would be done in 4 days, and it was. I did not need to hover (as I usually do). He was honest, punctual and reliable. When the floor in the basement that he painted was still sticky after two weeks, he even came, met me at the paint store, got the right clear sealer and came back to give it one last paint to get the job done right. Who does that anymore?! Very few.
I'm really pleased with all the work that he did in my basement. I've got a long list of repairs, and now I know exactly who to call.
