Setting up the install was easy. The installation
was completed on time, they cleaned up everything and were very nice
and professional. However, they were subcontractors and we were not
told that before hand. We had paid the first part of the payment when
we scheduled install and were told to pay the rest when they completed
the job. So we paid the lead contractor the rest of the amount. After a
month, the check had still not been cashed and when we followed up on
it they stated they never received the payment. We cancelled the check
we had given them and then a day later received a phone call that the
checks we had just cancelled had JUST been given to Long Fence by the
contractor. This was obviously very concerning to us since our checks
had just been floating around for a month. They asked us to pay again,
which we did, and they were never able to locate it. The payment
process was horrible and the office managing the money was extrememly
unprofessional. In the end we had the check sent via certified mail and
after delivered we called and told them who signed for the check and
they were eventually able to find it. The fence we have is quailty and I
am sure it will hold up for years to come but I will never use them
again.
Just wanted to share my experience with LONG FENCE and DECK. Doug was the estimator that I dealt with, he came out and walked me through the process and showed me the structural issues we had to deal with due to a bump-out above our garage. He was very thorough and I was impressed with how he handled things. Most other people I had met with seemed to not want to bother with the job or told me I needed a structural engineer to solve the bump-out issue. LONG FENCE was able to work with our 203K Lender and our HOA which also impressed me. Once we got HOA approval and the permits taken care of they started work within 10 days or so. The work took about a week or so, partially due to the weather.
The guys on the job were a little bit messy initially, a few nails here and there, but they also helped me carry a couch in the house, so I can't quibble too much. I was happy with their work and with Michael and the office staff. I would certainly recommend them and would use them in the future.

We called every week to find out what our installation date would be. The contract stated 4-6 weeks. Finally on week 3 we were given an installation date that just happened to be the last possible day of that 6th week! And we were told that it was just a tentative date! Any weather events would push the date back further! We were enraged and immediately called everyone we could get a hold of to express our displeasure over the scheduling and we were then given a date that was in the 5th week of our contract.
The day of installation came and 2 workers came at the appointed time of 9am. But they came with no materials!!! They surveyed the area and discussed with me what was occurring. I was ensured that this was a one day job. No problem. They measured out where the posts were to be installed and dug the holes for the posts. Then the one worker that could speak english told me he was going to go get the materials and that he would return in 2 hours. They would have the fence up today.
After 3 hours I called the office to inquire after the worker. I was told by the installation manager that he would call and find out where he was and call me back. After 4 hours I called again. The installation manager told me that he had just left the yard with materials and would be there within the hour.( I live in Silver Spring. The yard is in Fredrick.) After 5+ hours, the guy finally shows up with materials. He is rude and lies about where he has been. Says he was in traffic and that he told me it would be a long time...blah blah blah. They finally start working. They set the posts quickly and I go to check on their progress. The posts were perfectly aligned and I was happy. I asked again if they would finish today. He said he would try but he didn't think so.
I call the installation manager again to express my displeasure. He said that it would be completed today.
By this time they had started with the fencing and my wife notices that the posts and the fencing are not the same type of wood!
The posts were made out of pressure treated pine and the fencing was ceder. Our contract clearly stated that all materials were to be ceder. It turns out, after later discussion with the installation manager, that you can NOT put ceder in the ground. It rots. If our salesman had explained this to us, we would not have chose ceder! We would have chosen all pressure treated and we would have gone with another company because Long Fences price on all pine was more expensive!
The sales manager was then contacted and he offered us $150 off. We asked if they would wrap the posts in ceder to hide the pine and make it a more attractive appearance. He said no, they don't do that. We then told him that we wanted our money back. We were then contacted by a vice president who offered us 50% off of the job. We declined his offer because we were so sick of dealing with his company. Our little 60 foot fence and gate were obviously not important to Long Fence to do a good job.
It is now 3 weeks since that day and we have not received our refund yet. We are assured that we will get it by the end of the week though.
I won't hold my breath.
It started with the sales person who couldn't fill out paper work correctly,
and got progressively worse. After getting a supposed supervisor involved
things didn't get any better. I should have just walked away. I will say this I
do like the fence, it's 6 ft high and 400 linear feet. This wasn't a small
project, however the lack of professionalism of the sales staff, installation
staff (not the installers they were fantastic) and the general p*** poor
customer service and lack of caring, I will never use them again. I've told all
my friends and co-workers not to use them, and i know for a fact that 4 of my
co-workers went with someone else after i told them my experience with Long
Fence. Do yourself a favor and find another installer, you'd be better off.
Sales team was very eager to sell this deck at the time assured they would be there all the way. But once construction began very little contact. Contractor left everything a mess. The yard is full of fine plastic cuttings and dead grass where decking was laying. The contractor dropped tools on and scratched the new decking before we had a chance to use it. I had stone under the old decking took no measures to product old construction left a muddy mess. My thinking was this would be a cut above Lowes installation services but it is the same maybe a tad worse. Over all the finished result is nice but it could be better.
I contacted the company with details and was contacted by Melanie B., a purchasing agent at Long Fence in Ijamsville, MD. She had to research the project somewhat because the original fence rail manufacturer had gone out of business. After a number of email exchanges I picked up the rails today.
The purchaser went the extra mile for us despite the markup on the product being fairly modest. They made it easy for me to resolve the issue for me and my neighbor.
