I called on a Monday morning and spoke with someone immediately about my needs. They said they could definitely get to it the next day, but could try to squeeze me in the same day. This was perfectly fine with me. It was not a rush job and I didn't need to have it done immediately, but I appreciated the promptness. About an hour later I received a call on my cell phone saying that an electrician could be there by 1pm. So, I dashed over to the condo and sure enough the electrician was waiting for me outside of the building right at 1pm. He was very courteous and explained everything he was doing. (I was curious, so this was totally appropriate.) He completed all of the work necessary, which was a little more complicated that we both thought, in only about two hours.
Description of Work: Corrected some miss wiring in a recently purchased rental condo and installed GFCI outlets in the kitchen.

Based on the recommendation from this site, I had great expectations. The price seemed a little high, but I rationalized based on the reviews that it would be worth it. A week before the jobs I sent an email clearly detailing out the jobs to be done, including such points as the circuit breakers that controlled the rooms to be worked on. I followed this up with a call. Job was scheduled for a week later and I was to have a 4hr block of the electricians time, from 7:30 to 11:30 AM. Friday morning the electrician shows up and hour late and completes job 1 in approx. 1.5 hours. He then looks at job 2 and states that a second live line needs to be run before the new fan can be installed. However, he can't do it because he has a personal matter. Not happy about this, but I understand and allow a 2nd appt. to be made. 3 days before my 2nd appt., they call to cancel, seems that an emergency has occurred where they need to send all of their electricians to fix the problem. Again, not happy, but what can I do but reschedule for 1 week later. On Thursday, the day BEFORE my appt., I get a call saying that the electrician will be there a little late. This is surprising to me since he isn't supposed to be here until tomorrow. I quickly rejigger things so I can meet the electrician (this is at 8 AM). They send a different electrician from the first time so I have to re-explain everything. I leave him to his job and head off to work. I get home and find the light switch hanging from the wall and another part of the job incomplete. The explanation I get from Wilcox is that the electrician thought that since there was dry wall repair to be done, that that was the best thing to do (I kind of--just barely--understand this part), but I don't understand why the 2nd part of the job wasn't done. He offers to come back the next morning (8 AM) to complete everything. That morning he calls and says he cannot make it until 10. This doesn't work for me since I have a job. He offers to come Sat. morning to finish the job and he does. Now I haven't tested his work because the light/fan hasn't been installed because there is a substantially amount of drywall repairing that needs to be done. So a week later I put up the light/fan--and it does NOT work. Call Wilcox they send him back, turns out he mis-wired the box. That night I go to turn off the fan/light and I realize that it is still improperly wired. Turns out that a 2nd light switch next to it has the ability to override the light switch for the light/fan. So the only way the light/fan gets power is if the 2nd light is on. Call Wilcox again and they send out a different electrician who finally gets it right. So by my count this is 6 appts. for a job who's scope didn't not change at all from day 1. On the positive side, very polite. I am doing my best to be fair and the facts are as I presented them. I really wanted this to be a positive experience, but I leave it to you to decide whether or not to use them.
Description of Work: Job 1: install new track lighting and new light switch. Job 2: replace existing light fixture with new ceiling fan/light.

Great company! Super courteous on the phone, and Kevin, who did the actual work, was also extremely polite and professional. Showed up on time (even called 10 minutes priori to arrival to confirm). I was very happy with Wilcox Electric!

I received a return call promptly and was surprised to learn that I could schedule the work in less than one week. The technician, while delayed by several hours, did call to let me know that he was involved in a much more complex project than anticipated on the job prior to mine. - and he kept me informed of the status as the time passed. As it was nearing the end of a Friday afternoon when he was free, he offered to either do the work that evening or come over on Saturday. We agreed on Saturday and he was prompt in arriving. He worked efficiently and cleaned up thoroughly as he was working. You could not tell that he had been there when the job was done. The final price was exactly as quoted.

We had recently bought a renovated rowhouse only to find out a month after settlement that the previous owner had never had an electrical inspection completed. We called Wilcox Electric and Steve Wilcox came out and assessed the situation. He was very professional and courteous. The price he quoted was much lower than we expected. He arranged to have an inspector come out to perform the Final. The inspector found one issue. The previous owner had 2 electrical meters since the basement had been rented out. When he renovated, he changed over to 1 meter. The main electrical lines from the street had been connected outside the box as a temp fix, awaiting utility company to come in & switch to the new meter. As this is no longer allowed by code, the inspector failed the Final. Steve came out immediately and moved the wires to the inside of the meter box. We are very thrilled with the work performed by Wilcox Electric and with Steve in particular. I highly, highly, highly recommend them.

According to my wife, who was at home during the visit, the representative spent a lot of time explaining why it would be difficult to identify the source of the problem, given the characteristics of our home (pre-War single family residence in the District), and estimated that work required to identify the problem and repair it would require two days and a cost approaching $2000. She reported that the representative "spent more time trying to persuade her that it was a complicated problem to solve (using technical terms most likely intended to confuse her) than just solving it." In the event, we requested a second opinion from another service provider, which was able to identify the problem and fix it in a matter of hours at a cost of about $1200. In addition, we found that scheduling the work was difficult because the dispatcher did not pay much attention to statements that the work was of an urgent nature.
Description of Work: We called them to identify source of partial loss of power in our home. The representative (Ray, no last name available) came, and spent at least two hours at the house. They were unable to identify the source of the problem, and did not do any actual work.

Response from Wilcox Electric LLC
I READ THE MEMBER'S COMMENTS WITH CONCERN. MR. WILCOX HAS TALKED TO OUR OFFICE STAFF WHO SCHEDULE ABOUT BEING MORE RESPONSIVE TO SITUATIONS. WE REGRET THAT OUR ELECTRICIAN DID NOT SEEM TO BE FOCUSED ON THE PROBLEM. THERE ARE SO MANY UNKNOWNS WHEN DEALING WITH OLDER HOMES AND DETERIORATING ELECTRICAL WIRING, AND IT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO ASSESS ACCURATELY WITHOUT GETTING INTO THE WORK DIRECTLY. WE WILL ASK OUR ELECTRICIANS TO COMMUNICATE SIMPLY AND CLEARLY SO THAT A PROBLEM OF THIS TYPE DOES NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. THANK YOU FOR YOUR FEEDBACK.

Excellent. I called first thing in the morning. It was very cold in the house and they appeared to be very concerned and sent someone right away. He quickly fixed the problem, discussed the wear on tear on the fuse box and provided suggestions for future work that needs to be done so that this problem does not repeat itself. We will very soon change from fuses to circuit breakers and will use Wilcox when we are ready.
Description of Work: Fixed/rewired old fuse box. Multiple outlets were not working and there was no electricity running to the furnace.

Steve and Dick were very responsive. They got back to me within an hour of receiving my e-mail. They were willing to come out and begin work within the week. They explained how they bill and about how long the job sounded like it would take. Sean showed up on time and ready to work. He was very pleasant and was willing to explain everything he was doing. He completed tasks quickly and appeared very knowledgeable about how my old house was wired. I'm very pleased with the work and how much it cost. I will be hiring them again to do more work.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced 2 ceiling light fixtures, installed ceiling fan, installed ceiling light. Tightened 8 outlets. Installed plates. Expanded 1 outlet from 2 to 4. Began installation of outlet to be completed at a later date (at customer's preference). Very old house.

If they act like this prior to receiving payment for a job, what will they act like when they actually get paid? If he couldn't do or didn't want to do it, he could have just said so rather than waste both of ours time. I still haven't heard from him and I don't have a written estimate and it's been about 3 weeks since we first talked.
Description of Work: I called them off the list because they came highly rated. The first time I talked to Steve, we had a good conversation. He came out on a Thursday and spent an hour looking at the work and he said he'd get me a written estimate by the following Tuesday. A week later I never got an estimate from him, so I called. I got the run around and he had his secretary give me a quote which I thought was unprofessional. So, the second time I called him, we set up an appointment for the following Friday for 3 pm. He never showed up or called me and still hasn't.

I give Wilcox high marks for responsiveness. When I called in a panic late at night on a Sunday fearing that my new outlet was defective, somebody was at my door first thing Monday morning. He checked the outlet and then figured out where the real problem was in a piece of new equipment and made an effort to fix that for us. The earlier visits were also positive and the work was well-done. My primary concern is over communication--I don't think the work I requested was necessarily recorded that well--the first two visits had a lot of wasted time spent going back to get parts, etc. because it wasn't clear to the electricians what they were expected to do. I did talk to the office and was assured that the final bill represented some adjustment based on those problems. All the work done has been fine. Lead electricians were all very professional.
Description of Work: This report actually covers three visits. The first time, removal of a light bulb that had broken in the socket and replacement of an outlet in the basement that seemed warm to touch. I had asked for repair of fan switch but that couldn't be completed at time. Second time, installation of a new outlet in living room and installation of outdoor outlets and repair of ceiling fan. Third time, emergency visit when new outlet appeared to be defective--turns out it was an equipment failure and not the outlet.

Steve Wilcox came to my house to give an estimate on replacing the old cloth covered wiring that our home inspector thought might be suspect. He showed up on time and was a pleasure to deal with. He took a look at the wiring and said, "I have kids that I need to put through college. I'd like to tell you that we need to replace all of this, but I can't. The wiring looks good to me." That was when I knew I'd call Wilcox for all my future electrical needs. So we ended up just having the smaller jobs done and everything went fine. The repairman who did the work was very nice. He did show up a little late, but called to let me know that he was running late and when he would get here. Other than that, no complaints at all. I'd definitely use Wilcox again.

The company was very easy to work with. I'm an out-of-town landlord and sometimes company's are hesitant to work with me in getting things done, but not Wilcox, they took my credit card ahead of time, scheduled an appointment with the tenant, got there on time, did the job quickly and efficiently (I think it was a pretty easy, straightforward job), and they did it at a more than fair price, which is good.

Excellent, once Eddie arrived. He was delightful, fun to talk with and knowledgeable. He was late since he had trouble finding our street which surprised me since we aren't all that hard to find. But once he got there, he was fast, immediately was able to determine the problem in the front hallway, installed 5 new switch plates while also replacing the faulting switch that was causing the problems. He then tackled the plug down stairs which he determined had lost it's ground. He explained the problem, what it would take to repair the problem, tried to trouble shoot the problem by inspecting other plugs in the room and the adjacent room, but ultimately, we decided to leave the problem alone since to correct would require replacing a lot of wiring and tearing out a bunch of paneling. Eddie was very helpful, even though I was disappointed that we couldn't fix the one problem without major structural work. Eddie was at the house for 1 hour and 17 minutes, and didn't charge for travel.
Description of Work: We had two problems. One plug that just stopped working, and a front hall entry light that hasn't worked in ages. Our home was built in 1941 and has the original wiring.

The work was excellent, I am completely satisfied with the performance and would use them again. I had some spare parts laying around and they gladly used pieces I already had instead of charging me for new parts when they could. They asked me very clearly for permission before doing anything that left permanent damage (holes in the drywall) and never got frustrated or gave off a sense of being rushed when things were more complicated than it seemed it would be. They even called me the night before to tell me they would be a little late, most places would have just shown up late and never bothered to let me know.

When I called for the appointment, they weren't available as soon as we had hoped. We made an appointment for two weeks later. They called a few days after I made the appointment and said they had a cancellation and would be able to come the next day. We really appreciated that they remembered we wanted them to come sooner. The electrician arrived on time and performed the requested work. He was courteous and pleasant to talk to. We thought he should have been able to complete the work in less time than he did, but he did complete the job in the time they estimated it would take (they estimated 4-6 hours at the time of the appointment and he spent 6 hours doing the work). We did feel we were overcharged for the materials he used, since we had already bought almost everything he needed and had it on hand for him to use.

This was a small job and when I called they lady I spoke to passed the phone to one of the electricians so I could explain the work needed. He told me the job would cost no more than $200. $135 plus materials. They mentioned they had a spot open that day but I was at work and it wasn't an emergency. We scheduled the work for the 27th of Sept. The men showed up and did the work. They were on time and cleaned up well. The price of the job ended up being $178. The receipt that was left lead me to believe nothing was replaced but rather things were just adjusted. I called to clarify things and after speaking to Shawn, the man who came out to do the work, I feel like I was jerked around. I might hire this company again but I would make sure the same problems did not occur.

I had a great experience with Wilcox Electric. Steve Wilcox the owner was awesome. They were able to work with my husband and I even from long distance because we were still living in another sate. They came out and fixed a few problems with the switches and lighting. We had a small problem with one of the lights that I did not want fixed because we had just had the ceiling done. Wilcox and I came to a compromise. They even did a few extras for us at no extra cost.
