I called to get and estimate and find out if it was possible to have the wiring that would support a new, more powerful, stackable washer and dryer. After speaking to Mr.Wilcox on the phone, he came over that day to see whether it would require rewiring and to give me an estimate on the work that needed to be done. He was great. He climbed around in the small area where the original washer/dryer was to test the voltage in the socket, checked the breaker area to see what was there, tested the weight of the electrical wiring that was already there, and assured me that the more expensive and invasive rewiring was not necessary, and all I needed was a more powerful breaker. We scheduled that for the end of the week to accommodate my schedule. The worker arrived early after calling to see if it was OK. The installation took minutes and everything was great. I only wish everything else about replacing the washer/dryer was as easy as this!
Description of Work: Replaced a 20V circuit breaker with a 30V circuit breaker to accommodate a new washer/dryer

Ray was the actual electrician that I worked with to fix the problem. He arrived a little late due to morning traffic, which I completely expected. However, he called while sitting in traffic to let me know this, which I was pleasantly surprised by. Ray did the work quickly and was very personable. I would recommend him by name to anyone.
Description of Work: Examined circuit to determine why power was only reaching some of the rooms and outlets. Diagnosed the problem, fixed the wiring, and installed a new receptacle.

The two technicians who came out were prompt and very professional. They answered all of my questions and offered advise. My final product was exactly what I wanted. The price was lower than other quotes I received. I would definitely use Wilcox Electric again and I highly recommend them. My only concern is that I tend to rely primarily on email at work and it was difficult setting up an appointment via email, but if you have access to a phone at work there should not be any difficulty.
Description of Work: Moved of an existing electric panel from one wall to another, cleaned up the circuit breaker (mess) that was inside the panel, cleaned up the wires hanging on the ground in my crawl space.

I am very satisfied with ther service. It took them about 30 minutes to hang each light and everthing has been working great since then. The electician was running late for the appointment due to some complications at a previous job, but the dispatcher called me ahead of time to let me know, so there was minimal disruption to my schedule. The electrician showed up only a few minutes after the appointment window so it was not an issue for me.
Description of Work: I used Wilcox to hang two lighting fixtures. Normally I would do this myself, but this was an older house with old wiring and I wanted a real electrician. They hung an outside front door light and also a very valuable chandelier in the dining room.

The work was performed quickly with no problems. Juan and his helper arrived about 20 minutes late, but he called me EXACTLY at the appointment time to tell me he was caught in traffic. He started to clean up the tiny bit of dust his work had created but I told him not to bother. Both men were professional and very courteous. Price was reasonable (I think)

Our attic fan was making a horrible grinding noise around midnight. The next morning, I called Wilcox and a team was able to make it to my house within the hour (I got lucky with a cancellation). The two-person team checked it out, and as I suspected, the motor was dead. The guys let me know the situation, and they also suggested a replacement based on some models I pulled up on my laptop computer. They surprised me by charging half of what I expected to pay (I was quoted an hourly rate on the phone) so that was nice. I scheduled another visit to replace it, but that had to be moved because of an emergency. I was able to get the replacement done within a day or two, so it wasn't a big deal.
Description of Work: Checking an old attic fan, and then replacing it during a second visit.

The technician did a good job of isolating the problem as related to my hot water heater. He told me that it was the water heater that was causing the electric meter to spin around so fast. After checking the hot water heater (I do not know exactly what he did) , he told me that he saw no reason why the water heater would cause the meter to be so active. As he was leaving, he told me that I would soon receive a formal report from the company. After waiting several days, I called to check on the status of the report. My sense was that it was not being processed. Nevertheless, I was told it would be emailed to me immediately. However, that didn't happen. I then called back the following day to convey that the report had not arrived, and was then told that it would be emailed to me within the hour. I did not receive it until several hours later. Upon reviewing the report, I noticed that it seemed to indicate that there was something wrong with the electrical system in my house. Since this did not comport with what the technician had told me, I called the company again seeking clarification. I was told that there was a mistake and that a corrected report would be provided. I received the corrected report soon thereafter. I then contacted PEPCO to discuss my billing concerns. I told them that an electrician had advised me that the meter was malfunctioning. The PEPCO representative then began to ask me technical questions about what the electrician did when he checked the hot water heater. I was unable to answer the questions from the limited information contained in Wilcox's report. So I called the company seeking more details regarding the technician's assessment of my hot water heater. I was given the phone number of the technician to contact him directly. I called and left a message. But my call was never returned. After about a week, I sent an email to the company asking for assistance in obtaining the information that would enable me to answer PEPCO's questions regarding the his assessment of my hot water heater. It has been more than almost 2 weeks since my email and I still have not heard from anyone. I am no longer interested in following up with this company.
Description of Work: My reason for contacting the company was to obtain an assessment that would assist me in determining whether my electric meter was malfunctioning. I needed the assessment in order to discuss my monthly electric bills with PEPCO (my electric service provider). A technician came to my home, conducted an assessment and made a general determination that PEPCO's meter was malfunctioning

The two electricians were here twice. In the first visit he found additional problems with the wiring the house, including hot wires and wires that were not grounded. I have full confidence that the electrician was honest and we did in fact need the additional work he recommended. The electrician seemed very knowledgeable and was professional. The actually price ended up being more than the estimated price, because of the additional work needed. The light dimming switches work great. The first visit the electrician arrived on time. The second visit he was running 1 1/2 hour late. After 30 min. I called the company, and was told that they had an early morning meeting that was running over time and it would be another 30 min. before I should expect electrician. About 45 min. later the electrician called and told me he had problems with his truck.
Description of Work: Put in light dimming switches, rewire cooling unit in garage, connect outlet in wall, and check wiring in attic and fix any problems.

While doing some "DIY" work around the house over the weekend, I drilled through the wall and hit an electrical line. When the drill bit hit the line, it popped the breaker for the circuit - leaving my basement without any ceiling lights. Knowing my limits, I did not try to fix the problem myself, but looked on Angie's List for an electrician. Wilcox had a great rating and from the reviews and their own website, it looked that they did a lot of work in old Capitol Hill homes like mine. So, I called them at 8am on Monday morning. The scheduler was very professional, reading back all the information I supplied to insure accuracy. She said than an electrician would be at the house at 2pm that day. I was pleasantly surprised by the quick response time. Fifteen minutes later, I got another call from Wilcox, say that an electrician could be at the house in an hour. That was even better, and Juan (& his assistant) arrived right on time at 9:15. Juan was very helpful and described all the options, recommending the least complicated and least expensive solution. Once they started work, they discovered that the problem was slightly more complicated than it had appeared. Juan explained the situation and asked for my approval to proceed, which I gave. They finished up a few minutes after 10:15, and wrote up a very clear invoice with a charge for one hour's work and materials. I am very happy with the work Wilcox Electric performed - the positive Angie's List reviews were very accurate. I will definitely call them again and recommend them to my neighbors.

Everything went well. We ended up paying more than the estimate but this was due to an inspection fee and we were advised of this up front so i'm marking it right on.
Description of Work: total replacement of a 4 unit meter that had caught on fire. Steve is totally personable, honest & up front. This company also uses actual email & written estimates which is essential to me. price was not cheap but on par with others, i'd rather pay for good service. I look forward to dealing with them in the future.

I would like to sing their praises because they fixed the unfixable outlet that hasn't been able to be repaired since 1941. Steve Wilcox fixed it while he was there to give me an estimate for another service. I'm so happy that it is fixed. His assistant put a new plate on the outlet and he was very patient with me. I would recommend them to anyone. He is a truly decent and pleasant man and he is very knowledgeable.

We had some unsafe wiring in an attic that we were alerted to by another electrician but unfortunately the price tag of roughly $2000 was too much for us to manage at the time. We decided to get another set of estimates and called Wilcox based on the great feedback. We weren't disappointed! He was great. An easy communicator - very fair and worked with us on pricing that we thought was manageable. We agreed to one day of labor with the hope that it would be enough to get the safety problems resolved. The workers were prompt - funny - tidy and nice to work with. They got the job done in less than a day and we were happy with the price and the job they did. We would happily hire them again!

Overall, the electrician did all the work requested well. However, he caused periphery damage along the way. In the bathroom, he cracked the plaster very badly around the outlet. He also made the hole larger around the cable outlet in the living room and he bent one of the screw holes so that the wall plate can't be screwed in. Finally, he marked up the ceiling with his electric screw driver when he replaced one of the light fixtures. He did a good job of hiding the hole (behind trim) he had to make in the basement ceiling to pull up the TV cable, but tried to leave without putting the trim back. I was very disappointed with all the damage that was left for me to repair. I'd used Wilcox before and I was impressed with their service and price, but this time, I was more disappointed with all the damage and the price was higher than I expected.
Description of Work: The electrician replaced a bathroom electrical outlet with a GFCI outlet. Also brought up the TV cable from the basement through the wall to the living room. Replaced two light fixtures.

The contractors arrived within the 2 hour window that we scheduled. --I wanted to have a thorough inspection of the wiring in the attic as well as get my attic fan hooked up. It only took about 15 minutes to run the 7' wire from the fan to the junction box. The senior electrician pointed out an open junction box visible on the rafters and recommended getting a cover for the box - but he didn't look around any more than that. He said he would charge me another hour of labor to do a thorough inspection. I feel that he could have done an inspection while his partner hooked up the fan. After all they were charging me for an hour with two electricians. The attic is unfinished with a 7 foot peak - so there is enough headroom. All the wiring is exposed so you can see the wiring and boxes without opening up any drywall or anything like that. I felt like my request for an inspection was putting him out or inconveniencing him in some way. ---Another disappointment was a little miscommunication with the scheduler, who was really good when it came to scheduling the day and time - no complaints, but I asked her if the electricians could actually install an exhaust fan in the bathroom and run the vent out through the attic, and she said they could. The electricians that came said they didn't do any installation which was a bit of a let-down from what I understood from my conversation with the scheduler. So maybe I wasn't clear but I also think she wasn't clear that they don't cut holes in drywall or do any carpentry. Most electricians don't do that but I was under the impression that the electricians I was hiring did...

I had a wonderful experience with Wilcox. I found them on Angieslist and called them when one of my breakers would not flip back and there was a slight smell of smoke. I was not a customer of theirs, but they came over within the hour and worked until 9pm to fix the problem and make sure that everything was safe. Basically, the wires had burned quite a bit and Steve, the owner, didn't feel right about leaving until all of the wire had been replaced. They were really nice, very clean and professional. They wasted no time, they explained everything ahead of time and despite having to cut through the dry wall, they were very careful about where they cut and how much they cut, making repairs very easy. They came again another day for non-emergency stuff and did another fabulous job. I will use them again.
Description of Work: Burned wires in the basement needed to be pulled out and replaced.
