On very short notice Stephen Wilcox, owner of Wilcox Electric and master electrician, gave me the peace of mind I needed to move forward with purchase of a house. The best part about it was that it was free, but I think priceless more accurately describes it. Mr. Wilcox inspected the main parts of the electrical system for a renovated 110+ year old house and clearly described the issues we should take into consideration. He further addressed the concerns cited by our home inspector and advised us on the immediacy of addressing those concerns. He provided a solution to address the concerns and an estimate of cost. In a nutshell, Mr. Wilcox gave me a clear picture of what I was looking at and the confidence to move forward with the purchase of this house.
Description of Work: After a general home inspector recommended that I have the electrical system of a house I wanted to purchase inspected by a certified electrician, I called Wilcox Electric.

This is going to be a mixed review. The main thing we wanted done, which was upgrading the electric panel, went well. The box was replaced within a few hours and everything is working correctly. However, the details of the job left a little bit to be desired. On the date of the original work, the installer "forgot" to fix the switch, which was clearly marked in the paperwork. He also attached the grounding wire from the panel to the wrong pipe. It is supposed to go to the water main but somehow he found another pipe that may or may not lead into the earth, but it was not what was specified in the contract. When I called to tell them my concerns about the issues, they scheduled us for the next available date. This time the boss man was there and everything got fixed QUICK. Overall, the service was good, not excellent, therefore I have to give them a B.
Description of Work: Replaced the outdated electric service panel in our home with a new 200 amp panel; installed meter box and weather head on the outside; repair a miswired switch.

One project was to fix some wiring that was errantly wired the first time by another firm. The second was just grounding some outlets.
Description of Work: I have used Wilcox on two different occasions. On both counts the electrician was professional and did high quality work.

Wilcox Electric provided a prompt detailed estimate and the work was carried out exactly as specified at the estimated cost. Steve Wilcox both prepared the estimate and carried out the work personally - he could not have been more responsive in developing a proposal that met our specific needs. He arrived to do the work at exactly the agreed time. I certainly plan to use his company for any future electrical work.
Description of Work: Steve Wilcox installed 1) a new heavy-duty outlet for use with a sump pump and 2) a new exterior outlet with in-use cover. The latter required installation on a brick surface, and Mr. Wilcox was able to flush-mount the outlet which greatly improved the finished appearance/profile of the outlet.

Steve arrived within 30 minutes, even though I live in downtown DC. He was very pleasant, knowledgeable and thorough. After checking the fuse box in the apartment, he discovered that the breaker for the entire unit, located in the basement, had tripped. Fortunately, it was an easy fix. My stove wiring, however, was burnt. He recommended a great appliance repairman who had everything in working order within two days. Steve made a very stressful situation a lot easier and the price was very reasonable. I'll definitely call him again if we need additional electric work.
Description of Work: I called Steve at 8pm when I lost all power to my apartment due to something happening with my stove - burning plastic smell...and then POP! Lights out.

My house is 70 years old and has had multiple renovations. Mike, the electrician from Wilcox traced the various branches of the main lighting circuit until he isolated the source of the ground in an unshielded wire in a junction box. His process was logical, and did not do any damage to my walls or unaffected junction boxes or lighting fixtures. Further, he repaired wires that weren't the cause but would cause potential problems in the future due to similarly broken shielding. Finally, he responded to the call promptly, and was able to give his projected arrival time +/- 30 minutes despite my house's being his 3rd call of the day.
Description of Work: The electrician found and repaired a ground in the circuit that controlled lighting in my entrance hallway, kitchen, and second floor hall.

I called to get an estimate for the work done, and their prices were lower than a few other places I called. The time spent was exactly what the electrician estimated, and on the lower end of his range. He also suggested that I upgrade the exhaust fan motor (an upgrade kit) instead of installing a whole new fan (which I had originally purchased), as an easier and cheaper option. They were a little late on the appointment time, but within the hour. The two guys who came to perform the work were very professional - careful, neat, efficient, etc. I asked them lots of questions while they worked, just because I like to learn about these things, and they were friendly about answering them.
Description of Work: Wilcox replaced an overhead light in the living room, moved the light fixture and installed a vanity light in the bathroom, replaced the motor in the bathroom exhaust fan and replaced a GFI in the kitchen (the stove and two outlets were not working).

I called Wilcox Electric on a weekday during business hours. No one answered and I was directed to voicemail, where I was instructed to leave a detailed message and contact information and my call would be returned. Over two weeks later, no one has bothered to call me back from Wilcox Electric. Unfortunately, I am not surprised because I read other reviews on Angie's List citing the same complaint. Other electricians I contacted had the professional courtesy to return my call, explain why they could not do the work, and referred me to either another electrician or to Angie's List. Based on this lack of responsiveness, I opted to go with another electrician who was promptly responsive and courteous. I am disappointed that a company with such positive reviews treats potential customers so poorly...they must have so much business they do not need any new customers.

Response from Wilcox Electric LLC
We would like to emphasize that Wilcox Electric values each and every customer, regardless of the size of the job. This report was discussed with the two members of our office staff; Steve Wilcox, the owner; and Tracy Wilcox, the business manager (who is writing this response). We are all dismayed to learn that a phone call to our office went unanswered. This is indeed the second report of its kind. We are a company that continues to work hard to improve the quality of our work, both in the field and in the office. So we appreciate the criticism, despite the low grade! It allows us to focus on areas that need improvement. As a final point, I would like to add that I must be one of Angie's List's biggest fans, since I will sing its praises at just about every opportunity. Angie's List is a very good resource for new business and committed customers. It is a genuine pleasure to work with its members. Thank you!

When I called the company to set up an appointment, I told them that I needed a replacement part for my kitchen light and went as far as to give them detailed info about the light fixture, including make and model number. Therefore, I expected the electrician to come prepared with a replacement part. He didn't and he blamed the office for not giving him correct information. Then he tried to talk me into replacing the fixture. I ended up going to my local neighborhood electrical supply store myself to purchase the replacement ballast, which the electrician then installed. Overall, I found the the electician who responded to the service call to be extremely negative and not responsive to my request, which I explicity discussed when I called to set up the appointment, and which I reiterated when he arrived.

Steve spent about 40 minutes with me free of charge advising me on my demolition and renovation of my fixer-upper. In a few months when I have my new home stripped down to the studs, I'll be calling Wilcox to do the rewiring and light fixtures. Very much appreciate Steve's expertise and taking the time out of his day to explain a few things to me.

Once he identified the correct circuits went about moving them over as expected.
Description of Work: Needed to move two circuits from the regular panel to emergency generator panel. Compared to our previous normal contractor, the proposal was a much more logical way to route the cable and required less structural changes to the building such as drilling holes through walls and floors. In addition to the lower price, appreciated the recognition of real world application and consequences of how to route the wire.

I made an appointment a week in advance for 8am on a Monday. My husband and I both work so we selected their first appointment. On the day of the appointment, Dick from Wilcox called to say the electrician was running late because of traffic, which from the other comments I have read, is a common occurrence. He called only 10 minutes before 8am, which didn't give us much notice. At 8:30am the electrician still hadn't arrived and Dick admitted that he failed to tell the electrician on Friday that he had a 8am appointment on Monday. But he also insisted traffdic was delaying the contractor (probably b/c the electrician only found out at 8am that he had this job). By 9am when no on had arrived, we left. Dick never apologized but asked that we give Wilcox another try. Needless to say we were very disappointed with the service (or lack thereof) so we will not be giving them a second chance.

The electricians who showed up were different than the one who made the estimate, and it was immediately obvious to them that the estimate was way off (too low for our job, since the wiring was really not in great shape and needed a lot of help). The electricians were great--they worked hard to get everything done in a reasonable amount of time, gave me suggestions on further improvements that could be made, and did not charge any more than the initial estimate. That was a smart decision, as I appreciated their professionalism and will call them for any future work. The only negative was that the electricians were not aware of some of the services we had requested (moving a couple of outlets) and would not have done them had I not reminded them. As with any home services, you just need to confirm everything before they begin work.
Description of Work: Our 1937 rowhouse had outdated two-prong, ungrounded outlets that we wanted replaced with modern outlets and grounded. We also needed to install GFCIs in the bathrooms, and we had some awful DIY wiring from the previous tenants that needed to be removed.

I called three electricians to get an estimate on the electrical work discussed above; one company never showed for the walk through, and it took the second company two hours to do the walk through as they described how "difficult" and "lengthy" the project was going to be. Wilcox, on the other hand, showed on time for the estimate walk through (which only took 10 minutes), and they came prepared to do the work that day. The only negative aspect of the experience with Wilcox was that, after the walk through, it took 2 weeks to get the estimate (extensive game of phone tag). However, their estimate was 40% cheaper than the next company. They showed up on time, did a great job with the work and, other than the estimate game of phone-tag, it was really a "no-hassle" experience. I will definitely use Wilcox again.
