Overall it was okay, but not great. Based on the quote I got on the phone, I got the sense the exectrician we had was working pretty slowly (leading to our paying more). He also made holes that were too big to be covered by switchplates, and installed a light switch too deep in the wall to put a cover plate on. So, things are working, which is great, but I also have some work to do on my end to reposition to light switch box screwed into a beam and patch around some outlets. I have additional electrical work to be done (which I had hoped could all be completed in one day based on a phone conversation with the company), and I will probably call someone else to do it.
Description of Work: I had a couple of light switches and outlets added or moved, and had an outdoor light fixture (and light switch) added.

I am somewhat at a loss as to how to respond to this member's concerns. I share the concern about the quality issues, and we will talk to the electrician about why / how this happened. We hope and expect that our electricians do top-shelf work all the time and are chagrined when we fall short. Regarding the speed of work, the electrician on the job is a young guy and is typically a very solid, steady worker -- I've never had complaints of him being a slow worker.

Dale replaced two bathroom exhaust fans, replaced a porch light, and replaced two smoke detectors. It took him less than three hours, he worked very efficiently but explained things to me. Nice guy, no nonsense. Excellent value for money. We supplied the new porch light and exhaust fans, he brought the two new smoke detectors ($30 each). Will definitely use Wilcox again.
Description of Work: I had a porch light replaced, two bathroom fans replaced, and two smoke detectors replaced. Dale was very efficiient, explained things to me, and didn't complain about the quirks in our 19th century townhouse. Will definitely use Wilcox again. The fee ($324) included two new smoke detectors, so I think we got excellent value for money. (We supplied the bathroom fans and the new porch light.)

The electrician came on time. He took the time to understand what I was trying to get done and also took the time to explain things. He seemed knowledgeable and did what I asked him to do. He was reasonably priced. The person that I had called set up the appointment for me. He did not get back to me right away.

the technician arrived on time and was very friendly. It was a bit tricky since the new pieces didn't exactly fit the old wiring system. He did a great job and was very patient as I changed my mind several times about the length of the chain. He also honored the Angie's list discount without me even showing the coupon.

The experience was positive at every step. I set up a service call. About an hour before my scheduled time I got a call that the electrician, Dale, was running late on a previous call. He knew I had a class that afternoon and when he did arrive, he worked fast (but carefully) so I could leave in time. He explained what he was doing as he worked, was careful and methodical and gave me a few general tips about electrical safety. It took two hours for him to find the problem, but I felt that he was working quickly and efficiently. When I set up the appointment I was quoted an hourly rate over the phone and that was exactly what I was charged -- minus the Angie's LIst discount. I would use this company again and would definitely recommend it. It is transparent and thorough.
Description of Work: A circuit switch in the breaker box of my house kept flipping. The electrician had to track down the source of the problem: an outlet, a light switch or one of the appliances plugged into this circuit. It's an old house and this particular circuit covers a disproportionate number of rooms. The electrician, Dale, systematically began checking outlets and switches until he came to the one that was shorting.

Thank you for taking the time to submit comments on your experience with our electricians. Everyone at Wilcox Electric is aware of how much Angie's List customers have sustained our business over the last few years. I cannot say enough about the effective this venue is for both the homeowner and the service provider. We get thoughtful and valuable feedback on the occasions when we fall short of our goal of providing the highest quality electrical service possible. And our electricians really appreciate the praise!

He did the job perfectly. The first was a bit problematic because the ceiling is lower than I realized. So, I told him to leave off the light fixture. I like the fact that he explained everything he was doing, including that he was putting extra screws into the beam holding the light box, so that the fan would be extra sturdy. My wiring is old, but he said it is not yet at the dangerous stage. He put tape around the ends of the wires just to be sure. He worked steadily for 2 1/2 hours, and that was with my help to put together the blades. Both fans work beautifully. When I find a new company, I tend to check to see if the amount they charge matches with what they told me they would charge when I called to schedule an appointment. There were no surprises. In fact, the charge was less than I expected. This is a great find for me. I was looking for an A+ electric company. I will definitely call them again.

Steve Wilcox came over to estimate the work. He's a personable guy and can tell you exactly what can and should be done to meet your needs. Ray and David were the techs who came to do the work, and they were efficient, capable, and professional. It took about four hours to complete all of these projects. The work was done very well, and I haven't had any problems with any of it. Not everything was done exactly as I wanted, but the work was done within requirements. Specifically, they weren't able to find a live wire to power one of the new ceiling fixtures, so they had to connect it to an existing light switch--in effect, I have to turn on the other lights in order to turn on the new hallway light. It's not perfect, but I'm happy to have any light in the hallway over no light at all. These are the kind of compromises that I've learned come with homeownership. When it came time to price out the work, I was very surprised when it came in at less than the estimate. I'd definitely use Wilcox Electric again because of their professionalism, price, and high-quality work.

Dale and Ray saved us from an absolute nightmare. We just "finished" a renovation (read: our GC failed to finish the electrical work prior to "finishing" the job, but expected payment for it anyway), and noticed that we had an outlet that was not working. We called Wilcox for what we thought would be a simple outlet repair. Dale arrived on time and got to work, checking each outlet and light switch in his attempt to fix the problem. At one point, a tripped circuit resulted in all of the lights in the house (from the second floor to the basement) going out. After more detective work, he discovered that our prior electrician had not fixed double and triple tapped circuits in the circuit box, which (1) we had paid him to do, and (2) was a major fire hazard. Dale reviewed the other work that he had had "done," and indicated that we had some other issues that needed to be corrected. As we had had serious issues with our prior contractor's workmanship, it was not surprising that they had essentially performed electrical work that could have resulted in a fire. Dale and Ray returned the next week to review all of the work necessary to complete the electrical work that our prior contractor had not done. They replaced the box, ran the appropriate service into the house, and arranged for the inspections. And I cannot say enough about their professionalism! After having a nightmare experience with the first GC and electrician, it really makes us appreciate quality workmanship and character. Thanks to Wilcox Electric, we are confident that our home is safe!

Technician made free cost estimate (unlike competitors) on-site at location, and when work was done, price did not exceed estimate. Technician, Ray, was awesome in his straightforwardness and directness in what the issues were. He managed to fish the electrical wire behind the dry wall without cutting into it and causing repair. New electrical plug for washer/dryer looks professionally done. There were no hidden surprises with the install of the new circuit breaker box. It was a Ray said it would be when done. I had no problem arranging for the cost estimate and the work required to install new wire/outlet did not exceed expectations. Ray was upfront about the high cost of copper wire. The only room for improvement was that the hole cut to install the new, larger circuit breaker box was slightly bigger than the box itself, leaving a slight gap, which was needed in order to access wires. Ray mentioned it immediately over the phone when the job was done, recommending cauk to fill it. Upon examination, the gap is very small and may be good as is. Side-bar: company's admin help, Tracey and Kena, were very helpful, cooperative, and polite over the phone. Recommend this company without reservation.
Description of Work: Needed to relace a Federal Pacific circuit breaker box in a condo unit originally built in 1964 that I bought. FP's are illegal in two states and not made anymore because they didn't always shut off power when circuit overloaded, thus can cause fires. In addition, I needed to install a 220V cable and electrical outlet in the kitchen closet for a washer/dryer stacked unit I want to put in. Wire needed to go behind the dry wall about 20 feet from circuit breaker box to closet.

I was very pleased. First, Wilcox made a specific appointment, I did not have to wait for a block of time. The people at the main number were knowledgable and helpful. I did not have to deal with a phone tree, which I appreciated. The electrician who did the work was prompt and completed the work within the time estimate. He was careful, paying attention to not marring the floor. There was no damage to the walls, which I was told might happen given the need to run the electrical line to the basement. The wires were dressed neatly. The final bill was within the estimate I was given and included the Angie's list discount. I will use Wilcox Electric again and recommend them to others.

Overall my experience with this company was great. They were very responsive and Dale did excellent work. My only complaint was a miscommunication that resulted in the job taking two days instead of one. Basically, I called Wilcox and spoke to two people (a receptionist and an electrician) and described the work I needed to have done. They were very professional and helpful and the electrician said that it sounded like at least one full day of work. When Dale showed up on the appointed day though, he had only been scheduled to work at my house for half a day and he came alone. His statement of work said "Change out 20 switches and install light fixture." When I described to him what I actually needed to have done, he called the company and said that it would be at least a full day of work and mentioned to me that they probably should have sent two people to do the job. As for how the job went, Dale worked extremely hard all day to try to get everything done and even skipped lunch to keep on working. At dinner time he was still working so my husband and I ordered pizza and invited him to join us because we felt bad he had worked so hard all day without a break. He was very personable and pleasant and when we were done with the pizza he finished up the project he was working on and said he'd have to come back another day to finish up the last few items. Wilcox called first thing in the morning to reschedule another appointment for the next week and Dale came back and finished the last few tasks in about half a day. He fixed a few problems he found as he went along that I hadn't thought to ask about (like an incorrectly wired three way switch) and even took time to fix a kitchen recessed light that I noticed didn't work when I had changed out that bulb earlier that day. So Dale gets an A+ overall and the company gets an A- for not scheduling enough time, but perhaps it was my fault for not being clear enough. I would suggest that when you call to make an appointment, be very, very explicit about what you want and repeat it several times to make sure they write it down properly and schedule an appropriate amount of time for the job.
Description of Work: Changed out 30+ outlets, light switches, GFIs and one phone jack. Installed one flush fixture hallway light, one hanging chandelier, and one outdoor light all with existing boxes. Installed one ceiling fan in an existing box that required rewiring through the attic crawl-space. Installed one ceiling fan that required the installation of a new metal box (instead of the existing plastic one) but not rewiring. Removed a light switch box that had become unnecessary due to blocking a door. Fixed wiring in one kitchen recessed light although that wasn't mentioned in the original quote.

I am very satisfied with this company. They were punctual, polite and very professional. When I mentioned Angie's list I was told I would get a discount. The estimate did mention that the discount was included in the calculation, but there was no separate entry for it. In other words, the estimate only quoted a total amount so I never knew what the actual discount was or even if I actually got it.

Wow! These folks are great!! I started calling around as soon as I heard a strange crackling noise when I turned on my dryer. Fortunately, due to a cancellation, they had a tech available for that afternoon. I was darn lucky as they were booked for several weeks ahead. The tech (sorry I don't have his name) showed me what was wrong, explained what he felt the safest course of action was given the gravity of the situation and offered alternatives in case I couldn't go with the full plan right away. As he dug further into the project, his recommendation to replace the entire circuit box immediately was right on target; stuff had melted down in a couple of places. It took several hours, but he and his assistant made sure to run an extra line to keep the furnace fan on to keep me and my little son warm on a very cold day. Finally, when I emailed regarding the amount of my Angie's List discount, they sent me back a check right away with no dramas or arguments to cover the discrepancy. It's really nice to find people like this!

I remember the situation here. An emergency call turned into panel change. My electrician did not fully credit the member for the $100 discount to which she was entitled as a member of Angie's List. I was pleased that she prompted me, since I felt bad and hadn't yet done anything about it!

The work took four and half days. The original contract was for five days - since everything went faster than expected they credited me back half a day (how's that for an honest contractor?). The work involved cutting into the dry wall - I mention this because the electrician was very careful to minimize damage making my job at dry wall repair that much easier. I will continue to use the company and have recommend them to my friends.

The job I needed done was fairly simple - the receptacle in the laundry room was loose but being in a wheelchair it wasn't something I could do and the timing of the problem stunk: the beginning of December's first cold spell. Wilcox was very busy (since they also do heating repairs) but were able, within 24 hours of my call, to route an employee to stop by my house on his way home. Dale did excellent work, quickly diagnosing the problem (the receptacle had never been attached to anything behind the dry wall - all that had been holding it in place was the paint around the face plate!) and making the necessary repairs. He even plugged the Christmas lights back in when he was done. On the way out Dale looked at another problem I was having with my front porch light and advised me of the options I had for fixing it. Needless to say, Wilcox is getting the call to replace the problem front porch light after the holidays.

He never submitted an estimate for the work. Its been two weeks since he stopped by for an estimate for running new electrical for the basement I'm converting into a studio apt. We discussed in detail the specifics of what I wanted (removal of old electric lines and junction boxes through out the basement, running new recessed lighting, Wall sockets, light switches, dedicated lines for kitchen appliances, elctric heaters, bathroom lighting and ventilation, ext.) The initial appointment went well but in the end its been two weeks and I've yet to hear back with a cost estimate for the work. UPDATE: They have been in contact with me and apparently sent the estimate to the wrong email address.

I requested a service call from Wilcox because of their high rating. The electrician arrived on time and quickly determined that some old knob and tube wiring I was concerned about was still in service. He ran new service up to the attic that day and we scheduled a second full day for him to return and take the old wiring out of service and connect everything to the new service. He was very fast and conscientious. He made sure that everything was returned to service and all the old wiring was taken out of service.
Description of Work: Removed old knob and tube wiring and ran two new circuits into the attic to provide service to three rooms and the attic vent fan and lights. The work was difficult since it was not clear what or how things had received service with the old wiring. The electrician did a fantastic job sorting it all out. He worked very hard and completed the project as quickly as possible. I did this on a service call so it was priced by the hour so this was important.

Steve Wilcox walked through all our ideas with us at the initial assessment and proposed a plan of action and quote that met our needs. It felt a bit pricey at the time, but fell well in line with (and lower than) many of our competitors. What was bidded as a two day job was completed in just under two days. The electrician was smart, polite, experienced, and tidy. Whenever a question arose, he consulted with us, and offered what we consider to be excellent advice. Overall, a great experience.
Description of Work: We recently purchased a newly flipped 1910 rowhouse, and needed multiple projects. We: relocated a light switch, recessed a light switch box, added power outlet and light to the back porch, added exhaust fans in two bathrooms, added a light outside the basement door, added a new ceiling light box, and probably a few more.

Wilcox was very prompt and performed the services exactly as requested. Ray, the electrical technition was very nice and explained everything thoroughly. He re-wired a new ceiling fan that I had tried to install myself and also installed a new multi-speed fan and light switch I had purchased for the fan. In addition, Ray, fixed an outlet in my bedroom that was polarized wrong and not grounded. The service took less than an hour. I also received a quote on replacing my breaker box/panel. I was given a thorough explination of the capabilities and maximum electrical load that my condo can handle, and was given a fair quote and recommendation on replacement of the box. The experience was very professional. I would definitely use Wilcox again.

I knew I liked Wilcox Electric when the owner came to do an estimate on some work. We had a long list of items we wanted checked since we just moved into a very old house and wanted to ensure that the electrical system was safe. He spent a couple of hours going through everything in the house with me and answering questions. Then he provided a detailed estimate. When I scheduled the work, the electrician was prompt, prepared and very professional. His knowledge of his craft was amazing and he was very thorough in all of the work we requested. He was here for two days and went the extra mile by replacing a loud bathroom fan with a more efficient and quiet one. I would highly recommend this company - they were professional, very nice, thorough and reasonably priced. Working with them was a great experience and I will certainly call them again!!

The estimator wanted to show up early but I could only be there at the schedule time. He arrived on time and gave me an estimate as to how much it would cost to split a panel. I also asked him much it would cost to install a porch light and two rear lights in the back of the house. He said I could save money by getting the bulbs myself and ordering the front porch light. Last, my outlets upstairs had not been working, flipping a switch in the electrical panel did not work for me, but his touch seems to fix it (at no charge)... I received the estimate two days later. That is a record in my book; I have never had a company get back to me so quickly! Wilcox was recommended by a friend who had them do his heavy up.

Easy to schedule over the phone, arrived on time. Completed two of three tasks in a timely fashion. Trouble shot the replacement fan to make it work. Wilcox came out and gave us an estimate. We got three estimates in total and Wilcox's estimate was the most professional and the second most reasonable. Though we had some scheduling issues at the start, they came right when scheduled and did a great job. We paid exactly what they estimated, no surprise charges. The work was done professionally and quickly.
Description of Work: Wilcox replaced our breaker panel, installed a smoke detector, fixed a broken light fixture, and performed other similar repairs.
