Wilcox Electric removed two old light switches and replaced them with new ones. Wilcox also removed an old ceiling fan in a bedroom and replaced it with a new one with remote control that I provided. I was a little disappointed with the work because they had installed a ceiling rod on the fan which lowered it too much for the room, even though I told them I wanted it flush mounted to the ceiling. So after they installed it, they had to take it down and re-install it flush. At some point during the installation, they supported the fan on the bed which left a round black grease mark on the comforter. Additionally, unfortunately, the fan was activated by another remote somewhere in the area, so I had to take down the fan to access the internal remote switch and re-program the internal remote myself. Wilcox also removed an external porch light and replaced it was a new one that I provided. There were two light fixture boxes on the back porch, one higher than the other. The light that was removed was a flood light on the higher box and I wanted a regular porch light installed on the lower box. Unfortunately, Wilcox installed the porch light on the higher of the two boxes. I did not have them move the light because I did not want to incur additional hourly labor charges, even though the high porch light looks odd. I decided I would correct it at a later time. I hired Wilcox on two previous occasions with great results. This time, I was disappointed in their work though.

Response from Wilcox Electric LLC
Dear Member, It took me awhile to realize that you had submitted three, separate reports for three, separate visits completed back in 2009 and 2010. Thank you for your remarks. They are thoughtful and detailed, especially given the amount of time that has elapsed. One electrician is responsible for the two positive reports. He is a good electrician and recently left Wilcox Electric for a better position in a corporate environment. (Good for him, but we miss him!) A second electrician is responsible for the unfavorable report. We let this electrician go about two months after the time of your service call for reasons similar to what you have noted. Your three reports are interesting to me for what they reveal about the challenges of attracting and retaining good employees. A small contracting business such as Wilcox Electric competes with larger companies as well as unionized companies working on larger commercial / government jobs. Over the last five years, Wilcox Electric has been able to attract good electricians. We pay higher wages than previously, but it's difficult to affordable provide the full array of benefits that the best electricians can get elsewhere. Separately, we have also learned to manage our employees better (and the learning continues!). Customer feedback, from Angie's List members and otherwise, is so important in this regard, as it gives us a glimpse of the electrician's performance in the field. Everyone in Wilcox Electric, by the way, is acutely aware of the Angie's List spotlight, so to speak. That is partly why I am such a big fan of Angie's List -- it should bring out the best in the companies presented on the list. I hope that you will continue to call on us for your electrical service needs. Thanks again for your remarks. Tracy Wilcox

The day I moved into a newly purchased house, a wall socket shorted out and threw out all the breakers in the house. It was raining and dark and the movers had been difficult. When the sparks started flying from the socket, I could only imagine the worst. Luckily, the socket didn't spark and throw off the breakers until the movers were just finishing up. They finished in the dim light and once they had left, I went to a cafe with internet service to look for an electrician on Angie's List. Luckily for me, Wilcox was willing to send an electrician right away, even though it was late in the afternoon. Wilcox Electric was quickly able to determine that insulation on one of the wires in the outlet box had been nicked and come in contact with the metal outlet box which caused it to short out. The insulation was repaired and the socket again worked. Once again, the house had electricity. While Wilcox was at the house, I inquired about the possibility of attached on/off switches to two wall sconces I wanted to install on either side of the fireplace. The sconces that were there at the time were always on because there was no control switch for the power. Wilcox made at opening at the bottom of the sconces and installed toggle switches I had provided. Wilcox also removed a light switch upstairs and capped the wires when we were unable to determine what the switch was supposed to control.
Description of Work: Repaired a shorted out wall electrical socket. Installed on/off switches to two wall fixtures. Removed a three-way switch.

The first time they installed the roof lights for a security system. Since then, I had them check outlets and replace light bulbs in the roof of the home for the security system. They quote a decent price. I received the Angie’s List discount. The electrician was very knowledgeably, friendly and helpful. He gave suggestions on types of lighting for another project I was thinking about.
Description of Work: I had them out 3 times.

This is the second time I have used Steve, and I am just as pleased this time as before. Our PEPCO input was detached from the house, and even after PEPCO came and re-attached it, we needed Steve to repair water damage to our breaker. Not only did he perform the repairs expertly, Steve was almost $1000 less than another electrician who offered to make the same repairs for $2270. We would absolutely use Steve again as our electrician.
Description of Work: Removed existing, water-damaged, electrical panel and replaced it with a new, 150 amp, main-breaker panel. Re-installed existing circuits and labeled the panel. Repaired a small cut in the jacket of the service cable, which is now in proper working condition. Also sealed the meter can (which caused the water damage to the electrical panel). Separately, in the garage, replaced aninoperable, flourescent fixture and one GFI receptacle.

I really liked them. They were prompt. Their estimate was exactly right. They explained things very well. They had an inspector come in the same day and inspect their work while they were there. So by the time they left, I knew I had to ask for inspection. I will use their services again in the future.
Description of Work: I used Wilcox Electric LLC. I last used their services about three months ago. They did some electrical service for me. They rewired some old wiring in my house and redid the electrical cable from the outside of the house.

Technician Dale was prompt, called ahead of visit to let me know he was en route, and very polite and professional. He replaced a 3-way light switch that didn't work afterward due to wiring which Wilcox/Dale corrected after hours yesterday free of charge since they did not get it right the first time. Cannot complain. I will use Wilcox again; they are price competitive with local competitors, and I will come back to them again because quality of service for price is exceptional. Dale is second tech that I came in contact with; both techs very courteous and clear in communication on what issues are.
Description of Work: This the second time I used Wilcox Electrical. First time was to replace a circuit breaker box completely and put in a wall outlet for electrical drier. This time the work was to find and replace a burnt electrical outlet.

Purchased two ceiling fans for installation in my daughter and guest room. Thought I could do the task myself, but after climbing around the attic of our 1940's house and having no idea which wires were which, and uncertain if the current outlet box was able to support a ceiling fan. So I contacted several area electricians, most of whom did not respond to either my emails (via their websites) or telephone requests for an estimate. Wilcox replied the day following my call, and over the phone gave me an estimate for the assembly and installation of the ceiling fans. An estimate was provided based upon the estimated labor time (no service charge like other services). The electrician completed the assembly of the ceiling fans, removed previous ceiling lights and light switches, secured the ceiling outlet and installed the fans without any problems. The estimate was exactly what we paid upon completion of the job. The fans are balanced and quiet, and everyone is happy. I'm considering hiring Wilcox again to install a new fan and circuity in our living room.

My appointment was for noon. The service techs were running late that day. The office was supposed to call me and inform me of that, but they did not. (Negative points for the front office.) I called in at 12:20pm asking where the service techs were. We rescheduled for 1:30pm. The electrician who came was very nice and discovered I only needed 3 GFI outlets to cover all the outlets in the kitchen (I originally thought I would need 6, so he saved me some money.) I would use them again, because I liked the electrician and thought he did good work.
Description of Work: 3 regular outlets were converted to GFI outlets and 1 existing GFI outlet was repaired.

When it becomes clear on Angie's List that Wilcox Electric is having problems with office help, I really need to be decisive! I will only say that it has been an ongoing challenge to get competent and reliable help. (If you know of anybody, please have them contact me!) It is especially distressing when my customers are inconvenienced as they have been lately, and I apologize for that. I promise to address this issue!

Description of Work: My overall experience with company was very good. Originally, there was a misunderstanding with scheduling; but they able to come out the same day. We had breakers replaced and Steve gave a recommendation and estimate on future work. I was very satisfied with the overall experience. Initially, we were apprehensive about calling an electrician, but Willcox proved to be a good choice!

I contacted Wilcox in response to an Angie's List special for a whole house surge protector. Despite the caution that the high volume of respondents could cause a delay of several weeks, Wilcox contacted me immediately and scheduled an appointment within the next 10 days. The electrician arrived promptly, was very courteous, and explained all my options, where applicable. Before tackling the chandelier, he retrieved a drop cloth from his truck and spread it on the floor to avoid leaving any debris on my rug and in reassembling the chandelier, he made sure to adjust all the crystal tear drops so that they would hang properly. I have since recommended Wilcox to others.

Tracy Wilcox contacted me immediately after I bought the Angie's List coupon to say that they would be calling to schedule a visit the following week, after Memorial Day weekend. I didn't hear back the next week, I assumed that they were swamped with Big Deal customers, so I waited a couple of weeks and contacted them. Tracy was very apologetic about not getting back right away, and had a technician come out the following day at 1:00. The technician (I forgot to get his name) was super punctual, I think he was even a couple of minutes early. He was friendly, polite, efficient, and informative. The whole process took about 15 minutes, despite our sloppy wiring and antiquated circuit panel. I was very pleased with his work.

Everything went very well because my father is a senior citizen, he's retired and like a lot of older people he wants things done his way. I made it clear to them that I didn't want them to do anything except what I authorize and they followed my instructions. They went in, did the assessment and called me. They didn't do any work until I authorized the work and they did the work exactly they said. They also offered alternatives and actually saved me money. They could have charged me for a couple of things that I didn't really need. They were extremely friendly and professional. They did exactly as I wanted and the price was perfectly enormous as I expected. They were very prompt and they were not the first people I had called. I called another guy and left him two messages and he's never called me back whereas Wilcox answered on the second ring and they were able to have someone come out the next day. Within forty eight hours of contacting them the repair was done.

I called on Thursday and coordinator told Friday is possible. I return the call on Friday morning. He was supposed to come on Friday afternoon and I took half day off . Since we arrange the time on Friday morning, it was a bit short notice. .The message from coordinator to technician did not got through and he came on Saturday. Wast disposer stopped working. We could not figure out where the circuit was broken. He penalized the spot and fixed within one hour. He replaced the switch and did not charge. He spent extra time to a**** wiring system of our house. He was very knowledgeable. He was very friendly and cautious.

I needed quick service: a plumber had come to install a new dishwasher was unable to do the work because my new Bosch dishwasher needed a longer electrical connection for which I had to install a new electrical outlet under the sink. Wilcox Electric was most responsive and accommodating, finding a way to give me fast service. They were punctual, called before arriving. The senior technician Juan-Carlos was systematic, well-organized, quickly and clearly explained each step to me, then d worked efficiently, quietly and rapidly with his colleague. Although it was a relatively small and uncomplicated set of tasks, I felt that I could trust the company with larger work orders. It was a painless and pleasant experience.

The owner came and did the estimate. He gave me a lot of time and even spoke to me on the phone in the evenings after office hours and answered the questions that I had. He was very helpful. They didn?t finish the work properly the first time. I communicated with them and they were fine about that. It did take them a while to schedule to come back and finish it. I was okay with that. In the end I called to make the payment and spoke with the owner?s wife. She asked me about the worker and his helper. I told that there was no helper and that he did the work by himself. She said that the bill amount has to be reduced because I was charged for two people and only one guy did the job. She immediately took about $350 off the bill. At the same time it was a little bit like a miscommunication as I was not told about being charged on an hourly rate.

In this case, we provided an estimate in advance for the Member's work. An estimate is just that -- an estimate. We may come in lower and will only charge for the time and material used. If we come in higher, we try hard to communicate fully with the customer in advance and along the way. The electricians are pretty good about implementing this policy, but they sometimes forget. Customers should feel comfortable addressing billing questions to the electrician and to the office. I am responsible for the invoicing and will always take into account a customer's concerns about billing. Separately, we provide proposals with a fixed price for larger pieces of work -- panel changes, electrical heavy-ups, larger wiring and renovation jobs. Tracy Wilcox.

we moved into a new house (the first we've owned) and wanted to do some simple work, but work that was beyond our capabilities. i gave details over the phone to the receptionist, but had to describe exactly what we needed. I apparently didn't do the best job, as when Dale arrived, he was worried he wouldn't be able to finish in the 4 hours they had blocked off on his schedule, and told me how I could have described the work differently. We looked at each of the projects and prioritized what he thought he could finish in the first day vs what he would need to come back for. Our house is very modern, with cement block walls, which made simply installing a few new fixtures difficult, since we had to reuse existing switches. Dale completed all the work within his overall estimate, and was clean and conscientious. Whenever there was a question that he felt he needed my input on, he asked, but otherwise worked independently and efficiently. When there were simple things, he explained them to me in ways I could understand as an electrical novice. We'll definitely use Wilcox again, but might have an electrician come out to estimate before booking a full appointment since the translation from reception to the electrician wasn't seamless.

Thank you for the comments. It is frequently a challenge for those of us in the office to get a good understanding of the scope of work so that we might schedule an adequate amount of time. An estimate is a good idea when the scope of work is large, but unfortunately we don't have the resources to send an electrician out in advance for smaller jobs. There are certain types of work, however small, for which Steve Wilcox will do an estimate. Typically that type of work would involve running new wiring, and we want to know in advance what type of ceiling / walls the property contains.

Wilcox came out at the scheduled appointment time and took less than two minutes to determine that there was no danger with the cut wires remaining in the wall. They were very helpful and explained why there was no reason for concern. They kindly waived the fee since they were already in the neighborhood doing another job and my job took less than 2 minutes.
Description of Work: During the process of disconnecting a very old security system, I cut old wires connected to the various security system tags located around the house. Before I had the holes in the wall where the old security tags were connected patched up, I wanted to make sure the cut wires weren't 'live' or would cause a problem down the road sitting in the closed wall. I called Wilcox as I had a great experience with them a few weeks ago installing a chandelier.

Very well. Wilcox provided a timely estimate and performed all work for the amount estimated. With a sensitivity toward aesthetics, the installer took good care to install the lights in such a way that the wires were run along downspouts and pre-existing wires. The installation was thorough and complete. Everyone I dealt with was professional and warm (estimator, scheduler and installer). The installer was on site for roughly 5 hours. Thank you!
