Denchfield is by far the worst landscaping company that I have ever dealt with.  They consistently billed me for services either not rendered as promised, rendered ridiculously late, or for services not requested at all.  Briefly, I signed up for "Lawn Maintenance" pro-rated to $474.50 per month, for about a 1/2 acre yard (expensive to start with), and this was supposed to be their signature full service.  Instead they did not provide services promised, and sometimes would only mow my lawn every other week (remember I'm paying $474.50 a month for this!); after several months of this, when I called and asked why, the response was they had a change of crew chiefs and had forgotten about the full service in my yard.  By this time, I had already cleaned up my yard (it was late June already), but despite this, Denchfield came by in the summer, to perform "Spring Clean Up" (again, already done by me), and generated a bill for $1800+ (which I did not find out about until later).  At this point I switched service to lawn mowing only ($220/month; something I thought they could handle).  Instead they continued to bill me for full service (but provided lawn mowing only) until I refused to pay for services not rendered.  Then, in the fall, despite continued instructions for lawn mowing only, they came and blew leaves off my lawn and hauled them away, billing me for the unrequested service.  Not only that, they charged for10 man hours, on a single day, to blow leaves off a half acre lawn - you did not misread - 10 man hours on one day for a 1/2 acre yard!!.  Last year they perfomed the same service and charged 3 man hours.  Further, my neighborhood has a FREE curbside leaf collection service.  However, Denchfield billed me to haul away the leaves.  Again, they over charged me for a service that I did not request, and then knowingly charged me for a service that I would otherwise get for free.  When I told some of my neighbors who use Denchfield about this, they checked their bills and were uniformly unhappy at the perceived trickery.  Needless to say, those that do not drop the company will certainly check their bills more carefully.  When I asked Kurt Denchfield about these items, his response was that I actually owed him even more money, for services that he didn't realize he provided (remember the so called "Spring Clean Up"?).  Unfortunately, he did not check his spreadsheet prior to sending me the invoices.  He sent me bills for lawn moving in November and December, meanwhile these items did not even appear on his own spreadsheet (because they were never done).  Honestly, lawn mowing in November, and December?  Mowing snow?  Who are they kidding?
If you are looking for a landscaping company, avoid Denchfield.  If you are already using their services, I would highly recommend that you review your bills - you may find that you are being taken advantage of.

In response to Mr. Denchfield's comments below, he continues to make errors with his numbers; 0.001% of 8000, is 0.08.  In case he does not realize, this means he claims to have sent 1/12th of a person to collections - wonder if it was an arm or a leg?  My guess is that by the time you read this post, he will have changed the numbers, just like he did on the Yelp review when I pointed out his mistake.  It's time that Mr. Denchfield understand that he must take responsibility for his errors...and to set the record straight, it was me that fired Denchfield, after receving a bill for December lawn mowing, then having Mr. Denchfield contact me to try to negotiate payment...that is the reality...regarding other his other comments...thankfully for him, my mother is a tolerant woman and a creature of habit...but I'm not so sure she would appreciate being used to promote Mr. Denchfield's business without her permission...another example of how customers are treated by Denchfield Landscaping.

This company has extremely poor customer service. With the initial fence replacement it took the supervisor WEEKS to get back to me about when they could come and perform the services. I had a neighbor getting their fence replaced by this company and the employee replacing it at the time had to call this supervisor to tell him that he could do it tomorrow. I still had never gotten a return phone call from the supervisor himself. Then the fence replacement happened the very next day as the employee in the yard had promised. When I got home from work they had broken off a large piece of the cement stair where the post for the fence had been and they didn't have enough cement to repair it correctly so they placed whatever cement that they had. The stair was crumbling, the thumb handle to open and close the gate was not secured and would fall off and the house numbers on the gate were not centered! I called the supervisor back to report the things that needed repaired and it took MONTHS to actually get his crew to come out to fix it. This was only after numerous phone calls, messages, emails, etc. He came to view the repairs needed once. A few months later the gate was dragging on the cement. I called the supervisor, it took WEEKS for him to finally give me an answer. I talked the secretary today that said he was out of the office at the moment and couldn't take any phone calls. I then said that I needed to talk to this supervisor's supervisor. I was told to hold and then miraculously he WAS available to talk to me a few seconds later! He said, and quot;I can't get in touch with any of my subcontractors. No one will call me back. I cannot tell you when I'll be able to ever come and fix the fence gate.and quot; This is the fence that his company replaced a few months ago. I had a horrible experience with customer service and quality of work. Use caution when using this company!

They are fine. They show up regularly. We don't need to be home. I have never really needed to call for anything, so I can't speak to special requests, but I haven't had any issues either. Maybe they are a little pricey, but I know I don't need to worry that my lawn will be taken care of. Also, I chose them in case we wanted to do an extensive backyard renovation as they do these types of services too. I am on my third year with them.

The designer, Jim Graham, was very easy to work with and readily fell in with my ideas of an ecologically friendly design and was able to add to it. The plants that were dug up and re-planted all survived so their treatment must have been pretty good. My front yard is tiny, so I have created a garden space of it rather than trying to grow grass - less labor and ecologically sounder, as well (I think) prettier. We did have a set-to with the city's enforcement people when the men installing the gutter extensions went further than they should have, but I called Denchfield and the owner and Jim Graham got it all sorted out promptly. That was the only hitch in the operation. When the yard was re-planted, Jim Graham helped me to determine where all the plantings should go to grow optimally and give the garden good balance. None of my azaleas died, even the ones in poor shape, and everything is thriving this year. I am considering having them work on my back yard though that would be a much more expensive proposition.

The price is fair.

I contacted Denchfield because of their proximity to my house in Hyattsville, though I am stationed overseas and rent it out. Having just had new drainage installed to prevent my basement from flooding, I was left with a bare strip of construction dirt around my house where our groundcover used to be, which was already washing away in the spring rains.
I received a very quick reply, and an estimate within a couple of days, despite it being the busy spring season. Jim Lamont made a carefully thought out estimate and provided options, along with photos of the plants he proposed to install. He went back and forth with me on a couple of options before we came to agreement.
After agreeing on the estimate, they accepted to order the plants and start work based on my scanning them a copy of the deposit check, which allowed my work to get started sooner. Jim and the Denchfield crew worked with my tenants to schedule the work and take care of their main concerns, as well as showing them how to care for the new plantings. They also trimmed a tree damaged by a storm. Upon completion, Jim sent me before and after photos of the entire project, which was much appreciated since I couldn't be there to see it myself.
I've been thoroughly impressed and satisfied with their work and responsiveness. It was a lot of money, but I feel like I got value from it.

My Fathers condition has worsened in the last year to the point where he can no longer take care of the house and yard. I was living in another state and needed to find a company to take care of the lawn. I called a few places I found online and they were very unhelpful with their estimates as I did not know the exact size of the yard. When I called Denchfield I spoke with a nice man named Chris who was very patient with me and suggested looking the house up on Google maps. After virtually viewing the house and listening to the condition of the yard he gave me a very fair quote which I accepted.
My Father confirmed the crew arrived on time when they said they would, and took great care with his lawn that he is very proud of. He was able to converse with the landscapers and asked them to do a few specific things with his pots and hedges and they completed the task perfectly. We liked the service so much we got them to take care of the gutters as well, which I was very happy with as I did not want to deal with the gutters when I visited him.
Chris was great, the crew is very friendly and their weekly service gives my Dad the lawn he loves. The prices are fair, not the cheapest but then you get what you pay for. I would definitely recommend again for any outdoor service your home may need.

Jim, who came to give me the initial estimate, was friendly, professional and right on time. He listened to my ideas and offered some of his own, and we went with a design plan that worked for me (I was looking for something as low maintenance as possible, and I wanted to take out the grass in my tiny front yard because I was tired of mowing it with my weed whacker!). On the day of the installation, the workers showed up on time and did a superb job. The front and back yards look a thousand times better.

THE TWO WORKERS DID THEIR JOB WELL.

We have a small front yard but a large, hilly back yard. Over time Denchfield has removed years of overgrowth to help give definition to our hill.
We also use them for weekly lawn service. the price is a bit high but worth it to clear a wild and steep hill.

I communicated with the owner via email and set up a date effortlessly. The crew arrived as scheduled and removed weeds from my flower beds, removed old perennials and installed about 10 new perennials according to my specifications. The crew also did additional work, such as removing the weeds from a low windowwell area and removed dead plants from my vegetable garden. When the crew left, the garden looked fabulous and much better than I could have imagined.

100% outstanding. A+. Tremendous. The work itself is first-rate and flawless; Denchfield did exactly what they promised and much more. We are thoroughly pleased and impressed with what they did with our backyard. They took an unpleasant, overgrown, crowded, damp near-jungle and turned it into a wonderful yard where the kids can play and we can eat outside. It's beautiful. The patio and wall they built are superb, beautiful. We had serious water issues in rainstorms (water pooling in all the wrong places), and those have been completely done away with. But not only are the design and execution all we had hoped for; I was also tremendously impressed with Chris and his crew and their commitment and flexibility. When my wife and I had some small-ish modifications and suggestions along the way, Chris came out to the house, met with us, and worked through the changes. Every time I had a question, big or small, Chris answered it right away and to our complete satisfaction. This is a superb company, and Chris and his crew were remarkable. Thank you!

We contracted Denchfield to do our spring clean up and provide ongoing yard maintenance for the year. The clean up work was sloppy, they would never tell me when they wre coming, and worse of all, the repeatedly left our gate open - letting the dog out into the street. Even after several attempts to fix the gate issue, there was no improvement, and very poor communication. We cancelled our contract after 1 month.

After an initial conversation over the phone, Chris came out to do a survey of the property. Chris provided a timely, and competitive quote. Terms were agreed to via email and the work was completed to my satisfaction on the day he said the work would be completed. Everything was quick and painless. Not sure how better it can get. Thanks Denchfield and thanks Angie's List for the recommendation! Text book!

I emailed them to ask for an estimate. Jim came out to do an estimate which he later that day emailed to me. He scheduled me for later in the week but called to say that his crew had an opening earlier and said he could come out earlier. They not only trimmed everything but they really cleaned up the yard. They did a fantastic job and were very responsive.

I called Denchfield, and they went to the house and emailed me an estimate fairly quickly. I never saw the finished work, but my brother was quite pleased. He has since continued their lawn service.

I had gotten an estimate from Kurt a couple years ago and had decided not to spend the money for a garage flooding situation that occurs only a couple times a year. Usually, the existing drain is adequate but when it storms heavily and snow melts, there is an excess of water that flows down the driveway and backs up and completely floods the garage with 4" of water. The Denchfield crew was amazing in the perfection with which they cut out the concrete, built a concrete catch trench and installed the grates. The job was extremely neat and the cleanup great. My only problem (and I still don't know if this will work since the last rain was handled my the existing drain) is that the grates are very rusty and it is unsightly. Kurt says I could paint them but that would give me more maintenance. I may ask him again about it. The step installation was also done to perfection with beautifully cut timber and very good spacing. The old stuff was removed cleanly. all in all a satisfactory project though I was reluctant to literally throw money in the ground and have not seen the drainage solution work yet.

Began process after finding them on Angies List. Asked for quotes on a driveway. Dealt with Taylor Denchfield through the whole process. He came out promptly, took measurements and got back to me within a few days via e-mail with quotes. I had some questions and e-mailed him back. We went back and forth a few times. My e-mails were answered promptly, usually within a few hours - with patience and details I needed. Got busy with other things and didn't contact them until a month later (and they never bugged me duirng that time). I had a few more questions, needed quotes on a few more options and again, e-mails were prompt. And phone calls were also promptly returned. Once everything was agreed upon, they quickly got a permit and did the driveway in two days (Tues and Fri). They came when they said they would, took great care in removing my plants so they could be replanted, and answered all my questions. They cleaned up everything and reseeded the area where they had to dig up the lawn. I hope to use them for some hardscape/landscaping projects next year and possibly for some construction (they do all that). I've aleady recommended them to a friend.

They have a wonderful crew and keep my lawn in top shape!

Denchfield did not estimate the job for what it was. They over ran on time and I think the job was kind of rushed. I would probably rehire them again in the future but I am not really sure at the moment. I would say the work was okay but it probably could have been better.

My overall experience with Denchfield Landscaping has been terrible. They have charged me for multiple times for services they did not perform, and do not dependably show up every week (at times I have had to contact them repeatedly to come out and cut the lawn). During the hot weather, they cut the grass far too short. I personally will not use them for any services in the future.
