We purchased an Angie's list coupon and then called Nelson's. they got back to us in a timely manner and performed the service in a few days. The coupon price saved us $200.00 which was great.

We worked with Josh, who was excellent. He supervised the project, made good suggestions, and always answered his cell when we called or got back to us quickly. The company replaced our roof with the shingles Josh helped us pick out. They did a lot of trim work around many of our windows, and they installed new gutters and downspouts. They showed up for work when they said they would, and finished when expected. Their cleanup was very good, although we did find nails in the driveway for several weeks after the project was completed. I think they probably blew in off the grass at different times. Josh offered to pay for any repairs to our tires if needed, but we didn't have a flat as a result.

Nelson gave us an "pre-empt" bid during the week, so good that we accepted within hours of getting it. His crew showed up a bit earlier than promised, ready to go. They started in right after walking the property to confirm the work to be done. They worked steady and fast, cleaning up as they went. They hauled out all the cut wood and debris, cleaned the yard completely of all twigs, etc. and were done about four hours later. They were all courteous, friendly, well dressed, and professional. Absolutely, we would recommend this company for any tree or shrub job. \ We got this company from a friend's recommendation and he was right on the money.
Description of Work: Nelsons removed a medium size Ash tree, including stumping, did major trimming on Very large weeping cherry, large maple, large hickory, large white oak and very large red oak, and two smaller flowering cherries, and did a great job on heavy trim of all shrubs (over 15 large and medium shrubs).

They brought in a humongous crane and a chipper that ground trees up to 12 inches in diameter, and log trucks that handled the larger trunks without difficulty. They easily did at least 2 days of work in 1 day, and were very meticulous. They even lifted trees over the house! Their price was significantly below other estimates, and their quality was outstanding. I strongly recommend them.

They did all the work in one day. They sent 10 guys out to do the job and they did an excellent job and were hard workers. The cleanup was great and they ground up the stumps and spread it in the back yard in the area we wanted them to. I thought the price reasonable. I also gave their name to a neighbor. The fellow that came out initially to look at the job was very responsive. They knew their job and did it very well and efficiently. There was no wasted time.

It started off great. They actually answered their phones which a lot of tree people don't. An appointment was set up to get an estimate. They were unwilling to negotiate on the price but we went them anyway. The appointment was set up for 8:00am. After waiting over an hour we called to ask where they were. The man who answered said he'd get back to us. He called back to say someone would be there at 1:00pm and then called back to say 2:30pm. Too bad that ended up ruining our entire day. My husband ended up having to take the entire day off of work. We were also told the brother of the owner would be coming with the crew. He didn't show up with the crew. The crew did a great job. We asked to be compensated in some way for the inconvenience and were told only the owner could authorize that. We were told the owner would be calling us to explain why they were 6.5 hours late. We have never received the phone call. If we ever get a call back, I will update this review.

Response from Nelson Tree Specialist Inc
Unfortunately in this we tell all our customers we start our day at 8 leaving our shop between 7-7:30 am. On small jobs under 1000.00 we typically do not give times just schedule the work for that day. We are sad that this customer expectations were not met. She did ask for a discount in the beginning and we could not accommodate due to the scope of work to be done. She did ask to be compensated for her time but as I stated above the scope of work that was done and the fact that we do not give times when scheduling smaller jobs we were unable to meet her expectations. Our goal is to meet all of our customers expectations and we will work and strive to meet them all. Gary Cooper Office Manager Nelson Tree Specialist 301-854-2218

If I could give this company a higher rating than an "A", I would. Their price for the removal of 3 huge trees came in $1,100 under the prior estimate we got from another tree company. They showed up within a couple of days of the estimate to remove the trees. They did a beautiful job cutting down the trees, grinding down the stumps, and cleaning up all the debris. Their work was absolute perfection!

It went very well. This is my second time using Nelson. Their prices are highly competitive though probably not the lowest. The quality of their work, responsiveness and professionalism are tops. I had some questions about the original estimate. Nelson himself came out to review my questions. We reached a very satisfactory arrangement. I was very comfortable with his proposed work and proposed price. The crew came right on time. They are very professional and work with great care. Even got my lawn raked as a result! (given all the cutting and pruning). Obviously the gross $2,300 service was well beyond the $400 voucher (paid $200). However, I was looking for more work going into the deal so it was a win-win, not any bait and switch. Bottom Line: Came away very satisfied. Felt a fair price for excellent work.

We just moved into our home, which was sorely overdue for tree care. We had tree branches overhanging the roof, trees impeding the growth of one another, trees needing thinning/pruning, trees providing too much shade to the back yard, and dead/dying trees that just plain needed to go! I saw the Big Deal for Nelson's and the positive reviews and made an appointment. Nelson came and walked the property with us and discussed all the work we needed to have done, which ended up being the removal of ~10 trees and pruning/thinning of about 10 more, as well as stump grinding for half of the removed trees (his machine would not fit into the back yard without removing the fence, so we skipped it) and removal of all wood and chips. The Big Deal ended up being not the best deal for us. I've had tree work done in the past and expected a much higher price, so I was very pleased with this price and the fact that the 10-man crew showed up the next day and worked their magic. There was one tree that they missed, but since we had been given a detailed estimate, it was easy to go back to the company and ask them to take care of it (which they did promptly). Definitely recommend them and would hire again without hesitation!

I had a very large tree in the back of an urban rowhome that could not be removed using a crane. I saw the Angie's List Big Deal and decided to act on the opportunity. Having purchased it, I contacted Nelson Tree Specialist to arrange a meeting for someone to look at the tree. Mike and Antonio showed up on time, examined the tree, and discussed how to go about removing it. Mike was friendly and helpful, and Antonio was charming. They explained everything to me in detail. They also spoke with my neighbors to be sure they understood what would happen and to make sure they were okay with the work. One concern was that my tree was somewhat intertwined with a neighbor's tree, and they didn't want to do any damage to the other tree. They then provided an estimate that, including the Angie's List Big Deal (which they said wasn't really applicable, but they would apply it anyway), was the lowest of the estimates I've received. One estimator quoted me $12,000! (Not including the Big Deal, I had gotten one estimate that was a little lower, but the guy was rude and I wasn't convinced he would do a good job, so I didn't go with his company.) Mike also said that if I agreed to start the work right away, he could reduce the price another $100. I was concerned, as I could not be home the following morning and was leaving town the day after that, but $100 is $100, so I agreed. However, when I wrote the check, we both forgot about it (talking about scheduling), and I wrote a check for the full amount. (I should clarify that I foolishly gave Nelson all the money up front [wasn't thinking at all--isn't that illegal in Maryland?], so I got nervous after Mike left. But it was no problem whatsoever--they did everything they said they would do.) I gave Mike a key to my house, and he said he'd be there at 8:00 AM the next morning to let in the crew. I told Mike I'd be back around 2:00 PM the next day. After Mike left, I realized I'd forgotten about the $100, so I left a note for Mike the next morning and headed to work. While I was on the train, I received a phone call from one of the workers. They were trying to figure out how to get into the house. Apparently they also knocked on my neighbor's door and asked him to let them into the back yard (he refused). I explained that Mike had a key; he wasn't there and apparently forgot to let Antonio know about the key. But Antonio drove to get the key from Mike, and things went more smoothly after that. I did get home around 2:00 and was a little surprised to discover neither Antonio nor Mike was onsite when I arrived. However, I called Nelson's office and explained about the $100 and asked whether they would honor that, and they said they would send a check. Anyway, when I got home, there was a brave soul way up in the not-so-safe tree, lowering branches to a couple other guys, who then brought them down an alley, where another guy put them into a wood chipper. It seemed a smooth operation. The first day, they took down all the limbs, leaving a 12-foot stump, and cleaned up after themselves. That evening, I realized my air conditioner wasn't working. I stayed home from work the next day to ask Antonio or Mike about it, but again, only the work crew arrived. However, they were very concerned about the AC and called Antonio and tried to figure out what happened. They assured me that if they couldn't figure it out, they would send someone to fix it. I wondered aloud whether it was perhaps not working already, and one of them said that it was definitely working when they arrived the day before. Honest people! A rare find. Antonio (via telephone) figured out that the plywood they had put on the AC unit to protect it had actually suffocated it, causing it to switch off automatically. After several hits of the reset and (believe it or not) kicking the unit, it finally came back on. That day they took down the rest of the tree, leaving only a short stump (there was no way to get a stump grinder into my yard). They cleaned up thoroughly in both my yard and my neighbor's yard (at least, everywhere they could reach). There was no sign in my yard that anyone had been there--only a missing tree. And although I think a limb or two of the neighbor's tree was broken--which was almost inevitable--the tree was mostly undamaged. I was impressed with the work, and the neighbors said they were impressed as well. And it turned out that the tree was hollow! It was ready to fall during the next big storm. Mike apparently showed up to monitor the end of the project. He left me a voice mail about the hollow tree and texted me a photo of the hollow stump. And the $100 check did arrive, although it took a couple reminders. Overview: Nelson did beautiful work with a very difficult job at a very reasonable price. They are honest people who take pride in their work. If I were going to nitpick, I might say their internal communications--or perhaps their management style--is a little casual. I think their focus is on the work itself and not so much the administration. But it's a small thing. I was very happy with the work and would strongly recommend Nelson as a tree service provider.

INelson Tree Services called me back the same day I paid for the service! Friday I paid for the services and Tuesday some one came out to look at the job. Wednesday the job was completed. I told my neighbor what I paid and he told me he paid twice the amount I paid and he got less trees cut down. This company deserve an A+ because they worked so hard. I have one more tree to get cut down and the only reason they did not cut it down they ran out of space in the chipper. So i have to look for another deal from the Nelson. Tree Specialist Inc.

Mike from Nelsons Tree Service returned my call the day after I left a message. We made an appointment for the next day, and right on time the 2 man team of Nelson and Mike showed up to look over the work I wanted done and to provide an estimate. Both Nelson (owner of the company) and Mike were extremely knowlegeable, friendly and very easy to work with. They offered several very helpful suggestions on how the work should be done, and what trees needed attention. The price they quoted was extremely resonable (I had other prior estimates). They also gave me the option of sending a large crew and getting the job done in one day, which would save me money vs a smaller crew 4 man crew that would take 2 days to complete the job. Once we agreed on the approach and the price, they had a crew on-site 2 days later. The job was finsihed in 1 day and went so smoothly I was amazed. Because of the location of the large oak (34 ft.), they could not use a crane, so it was all done by hand. The crew was very professional, and the job was completed with absolutely no issues. Even the clean up of the yard was extremely thorough. The whole experience was great, and I will definitly use Nelsons for all my future tree services.

Nelson responded promptly to my email request to schedule an appointment at my home to discuss maintenance trimming of some very large trees in my backyard. From the start, I could tell that he knew what he was doing, he suggested an overall game plan which was agreed upon and work began the very next day at a reasonable price. A bucket truck, tree climber plus 4 laborers spent all day transforming my backyard as well as pruning some overgrown magnolia's & zelkova's in the front yard. They arrived on time and spent all day working hard at their assigned tasks. At the end of the day, they cleaned up all the debris and the yard looks great. I would highly recommend their services.

We live in Baltimore City in a very tight rowhouse situation. There is a steep hillside on one side of us and an alley behind that curves sharply and then narrows to the point that the garbage trucks cannot come through. Sadly, our largest and most lovely elm tree died - its limbs were about 50 feet long and 6-8" in diameter and I estimate the height of the tree at 125 feet. Some of the huge limbs were already breaking off. The only access was through the alley, where there are lots of power lines, neighbors porches, and other impediments. We have had one other large tree removed and I first called that company. They were clearly not interested in doing this more difficult job nor in doing it the way that we wanted. Nelson came out personally to assess the situation, he, listened carefully to what I wanted (and made good suggestions when needed). We agreed to leave a certain amount of the trunk as bird sanctuary and to pile a couple of large sections of the trunk against the hill as erosion control. He was to cut and stack 16" pieces of firewood where the limbs were useful and chip what could not be used. He covered our fishpond to keep out the inevitable sawdust. He promptly sent me the requested certificate of insurance. A crew of eight arrived promptly on a Tuesday (avoiding recycle day and trash day) and he placed his 'smallest crane' (100 foot extension) at the bend in the alley. His 'smallest' chipper could take wood up to 16" in diameter and was placed farther down. I felt like I was watching the Cirque du Soleil when his men climbed the tree. The crane operator was absolutely amazing, maneuvering through tiny little spaces with pinpoint precision. Most of the longer taller limbs they took down by attaching a sling, then tensioning the line and having one of the climbers cut it with a chain saw. The limbs were lifted out, avoiding telephone lines and fences, and laid into the alley to be cut into firewood and chipped. The entire crew worked steadily and clearly kept an eye out for other. Nobody made a move until they were sure that every other member of the crew was safe. Every critical cut was confirmed with me first, and I can report that the many birds are happy with their new homes. There was not a single 'oops', nobody was injured, nothing was broken. It was five hours of sheer professionalism and a joy (and a thrill) to watch. The firewood was stacked very neatly They do offer an Angie's special - a full crew for an 8 hour day for less than $2K and I suspect that this would be a great value for someone in a suburban or less difficultly placed house. Nelson would have honored that but said that it was not a good deal for me. After seeing what they did and the amount of heavy specialized equipment that they used I must agree. It was a real joy to watch a coordinated crew work with such good cheer, carefulness, and professional experience. It could easily have been a two or three day job if they weren't so good and didn't have such good equipment. I can recommend them in the highest possible manner and want to take this public opportunity to thank Nelson, his younger brother and the rest of his crew for turning a nightmare into a fully wonderful experience.

I got quotes from several companies to do the above work. There were power lines running through the trees and some of the companies suggested having the power turned off for the day, which would have been a headache for the next-door neighbors. Another company stated that we'd need to have the neighbor remove part of their fence to get the job done. Nelson's employee assured me that this would not be needed. I was a little nervous but after reading all the positive reviews on here and visiting the BBB website, I figured they knew what they were doing. While I took the time to get other quotes, this company called me several times. This was a little annoying but they did demonstrate their commitment to getting our business and offering the best price. I hired Nelson and set up the appointment for two days later; they were very flexible in being available on a rare day off for me. A crew of 6 or 7 arrived. They were earlier than expected but I can't complain about that. I re-checked the work that I had requested. They got to work right away and worked quickly but safely. The key was that they have a CRANE. The crane made it easy to get large pieces of the trees down my long driveway and out into the street where they had a chipper waiting for each piece. A huge amount of work was done in 2.5 hours. They could have left after that but stayed to do a decent job cleaning up the yard. They even took some sticks and some old stumps (not attached to the ground) that I didn't know what to do with out of the yard for me. They also cut down another existing stump (attached to the ground) to make it more flush, without me having to ask.

Crew of 9 arrived at 8:00 a.m. as promised. After walking through to confirm what needed to be done, the crew immediately started work downing the dying Spruce and thinning out the 80-year old Maple. Another team started working on removing dead wood and cutting requested tree limbs from the Pin Oak. They worked most efficiently as a team and completed all requested work by 10:00 a.m. Clean up of debris was exceptional. Nelson and his brother and the entire crew were terrific. They showed up on time, worked tirelessly all day, completed the work professionally, and cleaned up when they finished. I would recommend them to anyone.
