It was supposed to lower our heating/cooling bill. It didn;t but proving it a lost cause because they said costs were due to increased utility rates and variations in weather.
In the winter the drain line from heater to outside freezes up and shut down the furnace in the attic. Freezing isn't just at outside drain pipe but the 30-40 feet from there all the way to the furnace. When we tired of the run around on how it was supposed to lower our heating cooling costs. Went with another company (if you contact me I'll tell you which one).
We learned that furnace in attic was why too big of a unit for what we needed. had a smaller unit been sold to us likely hood of these problems would disappear. Installed in such a way that some parts if they went bad wouuld require unhooking whole device and turning it around to service it.
Heat pump was set at 35 degrees so that when outside temp dipped below that the furnace was supposed to take over, alas with frozen pipe that did not work.
Now painfully reminded of failure of high priced sales job ends up costing
Heat pump is less than 5 years old and already needs a electrical board replacement. Warranty, yes but labor no. So investing at $9000+ is no guarantee of less costs.
When I called to check this out at 72dgrs got the same kind of rude treatment that I got from the former owners receptionist, only this time it was a man, probably from new owners. I am guessing the former ones sold out (after they made all they could) when they learned about their reputation in the public, new owner inherited that reputation.
"[Member name], you are making comments that are not factual. While your comments describe your side of the story, as they should, it's safe to say that we do not agree. Facts are objective, but opinions are subjective. Angie's community members are intelligent enough to see you're review is subjective. It's difficult to imagine that a person who calls themselves a minister would work as desperately as you have for years to defame this business. You are in the vocal minority and your words show your true intent to defame this organization. What reasonable person would write "I know why folks in these parts refer to them as 72 Thieves"? The internet and social media are certainly a great thing for people and society in general, but they are also a uniquely effective breeding ground for potentially untrue libelous statements. The system you purchased was sized per NC state requirements, had a County permit issued, was inspected by an independent 3rd party County official, passed final inspection and is protected by the strongest written warranties and guarantees in the business. You choosing to move on to another service provider was your choice [Member name], not ours. Thousands of people, just like you, use 72 Degrees every year. The overwhelming majority are satisfied, happy clients that consistently use us to stay comfortable. 72 Degrees will continue to provide the best service experience possible to everyone we have the opportunity to serve. To the folks who choose to leave we're sorry we couldn't please them and we wish them the best."
I had signed a maintenance contract for my 3 HVAC units with 72 degrees when I moved into my new house last year. First off, it is important to know that 72 degrees DOES NOT make appointments! You can schedule a date, but never a time!
In May when routine maintenance was due on the systems, they called the day before saying they had to cancel the service because they were too busy with repair calls. At the time, I was told that the account would be noted and that the new date was marked so that it WOULD NOT get cancelled again.
When the new repair day came around, I again got called the day before to tell me that they would not be coming to service my units as they were too busy with repair calls and since I had 3 units they couldn't set aside enough time to service them. When I told them I had been promised that this date would not be cancelled, I was told sorry but there is nothing we can do and we will not be coming to service your units.
So, we scheduled a third date to have the services performed. Surprisingly, this time they actually showed up!
Unfortunately, the day after having routine servicing performed, one of the units that had been given the "all clear" stopped working. First off, I find it more than coincidental that the unit would stop working the day after someone had been inside of it repairing it. So, I called to have it repaired. Keep in mind I had a service contract signed with this company that supposedly offers 24/7 service. When I called to have it repaired, the upstairs thermostat was reading 88 degrees and the unit was not putting out any cold air. I was told that it would be put on the schedule for the next day! I found that unacceptable since the bedrooms were all on the floor where the A/C wasn't working. I asked why a company that has 24/7 service couldn't respond to the call that day and was told that "all technicians are out on other calls and it would be dark before they could get to you." Dark? So what if it's dark - the company advertises 24/7 service, but I guess they only work when it's sunny outside!
The next day I got a call from one of the owners. She tried to make excuses for not being able to perform the maintenance when scheduled, first saying they were short-staffed then saying "If your A/C wasn't working, wouldn't you want it put ahead of other customer's routine maintenance?" I said I would, and then asked why my broken A/C was put off until the next day and was again given nothing but excuses.
Parts and services that were supposed to be performed under the maintenance agreement weren't, the company attempted to charge for every single thing always making up an excuse why something that was explicitly listed as "covered" on there maintenance agreement wouldn't be covered for one reason or another.
The owner then told me, and this is a direct quote, "Never call us again." She will cut you off after every other word so that you can never even complete a sentence.
So, my advice is to run as far away from this company as possible. They advertise services that they definitely can not provide, and have absolutely horrible customer service!!!
UPDATE:
The company's response below, accusing an honest customer of fraud after trying to get the company to honor the terms of it's contract, only further demonstrates how low this company will go and how little they care about their customers.
"We are sorry that we can no longer service this account. When a full refund was issued, our company policy is that we no longer service an account. After many years of customer service, we at 72 Degrees pride ourselves on providing outstanding customer service. However, statistics show that there are some customers who are only out to gain free services and will complain about those companies who follow the American way of charging for services rendered. If this is one of those instances, and we discover it, we unfortunately have to recommend another service company as no company can sustain itself following this business philosophy. We welcome those who wish to receive exceptional service from a company that follows God's laws as well as those of our nation's founding fathers. God bless and feel free to count on 72 Degrees of Hickory for fair service at a fair price. We will always do our best to the best of our ability; just ask our thousands of happy customers."
If you are a wealthy family and don't mind spending more money, I think 72 degrees is the ticket and will fulfill your needs without any headaches - Especially, if you have them install their system and you purchase their annual plan. Everything will be done right. If you are in the middle or lower end of the financial spectrum, it would be worthwhile to comparison shop. However, be careful, the Hickory area definitely has worse HVAC people, who do not know what they are doing and may not be trustworthy.
When I called to schedule a service call I specifically asked what the tech would 72Degree do for the $77.00 service call. I was assured that the tech would stay at my house as long as necessary to correctly diagnose the cause of the problem. When the 72Degrees tech arrived I described the problem to him and proceeded to do what apparently is a normal service call for 72Degees. After a while the tech told me I needed a $1600.00 repair. yes sixteen hundred dollars. Immediatly the tech started asking about my credit and told me several times I should consider replacing the entire central air system. He also told me that the brand of heat pump that I have is the worst on the market and is very difficult to maintain. This is also when he started telling me about his "Christian life" and that 72Degrees was owned and operated by Christians. He really laid this on thick. I agreed to let a 72Degree salesperson come to my house the next day. The 72Degrees salesperson gave me an agressive sales pitch , he used lots of big words and told me that my current heat pump would probably not last thru the summer. He also told me that if I did not purchase a new system from 72Degrees then they would not respond to any service calls I had for 6 years- as he put it "they made the customer live with their decision" -- Again many questions about my credit.
A few days later I called a 2nd repair company and told the nothing about my experience with 72Degress. I talked to a technician from the 2nd company on the phone and he told me it would be a simple fix A different part entirely from what 72Degrees had told me was defective.. When the 2nd tech arrived he had the problem fixed in about 20 minutes and charged me $40.00( fourty) My central air has worked perfectly since the $40.00 repair. I called 72Degrees for a refund and they since they did not diagnose the problem correctly as that had promised. They refused to refund my money unless I could prove the 2nd technician did a complete system diagnostic. That certainly was not part of what they promised when I first called 72Degrees, I recommend that everyone steer clear of 72Degrees. It is plain to see that 72Degree fabricated a huge repair in order to sell me a new central air system"[member name removed], Thank you for the positive review. We are working hard to provide the best service for the lowest price. This is a difficult task. How do you provide the best service for the lowest price? I promise, we will continue to do all we can to provide that experience."
