Warner came out, called me with the estimates fairly quick. He gave me a reasonable cost for the project. I had a revision to my request, and he came out to update his estimate without complaint about me not thinking of the revision initially. He was very reasonable to deal with. His crew came out and did very quick and efficient work. I expect the craftsmanship to hold up for decades to come, or at least until the next car runs into the fence. . .
I also had a bent rail along the side and some loose ties, and they repaired all those issues that were separate from my main concern--the front fence that was damaged. Nice job overall.
It was about 10-15 days after I signed the contract that they came to do the work, which was within the range I was quoted. They worked quickly and seemed to know what they were doing. They were done in about a day and a half. At the end of the first day, although they had hauled away the old fence, I noticed that the landscaping timbers were still there. I had to call Warner to request that they remove them the following day. They did, but seemed annoyed about it. Overall, I was pleased with the end product and the quality of the work.
When I got the original estimate, I asked them to leave a second, 7 or 8 foot existing section of fence intact. It was still standing, so I figured it didn't need to be replaced. However, once the new fence was put in, it made the existing fence look terrible. (It was probably around 20 years old.) I called Warner back and asked if he could replace that section of fence as well. And that's really when the problems started.
Warner came back to the house and I signed a new contract for the rest of the work. Another 10 or 15 days later, the workers showed up and did the work when I wasn't home. They never informed me that they were coming, and I had no opportunity to inspect their work before they left. I was completely unsatisfied, to say the least. The posts were crooked, the boards were warped, and the work looked amateurish.
My wife called to complain that the work wasn't acceptable. Warner was defensive, somewhat rude, and didn't want to acknowledge that the work was subpar. It took several weeks (probably 4-6) to get someone to come back out to the house. The crew who built the original fence came, agreed that it wasn't well done, and rebuilt it while I was there. I was told that they subcontract out small jobs, and it was the subcontractor who had done the work. So definitely don't hire them for small jobs.
It's now about a year later, and I can no longer get the gate open. I guess the posts have moved or sank, and now it takes a very hard pull up on the gate to get the latch free. If I had to do it all again, I'd take my business elsewhere.
I did ask, however, that any extra dirt from the post holes be placed in one area, not thinking there would be much dirt coming out of each hole for each post. The guys agreed to use our wheelbarrow and put the extra dirt over in the area where I showed them. When the fence was done though, I noticed all this red clay about 2-3 feet in from the fence on the lawn all around the perimeter of the fence. I never knew we had red clay until I saw it for the first time here with the fence install. The foreman told me he brought some of the "dirt" like I had asked over to the spot where I had asked, although I don't see how he could have because when I went to use our wheelbarrow to haul the dirt over there myself later in the week, cleaning up the mess, the wheelbarrow had a flat tire. I don't know if the wheel barrow had a flat tire before they started using it or after they started using it. But then I went back to the contract and saw where it says "East Coast Fence will not be responsible to remove excess dirt due to digging for post placement, all dirt is left on job site". If I had known we had red clay, and this much clay would have been left around the area, I would have looked more closely at the contract and considered alternatives.
I have a huge task now of raking up red clay out of what was a really nice yard. It will take me weeks to do that. In the meantime the dogs are tracking red clay into the house and ruining the rugs. I have to clean their feet every time they come into the house. It defeats the purpose of having a fence installed around a nice grassy area so you can let your dogs out safely and hassle free. Do your homework, read the details of the contract, and find a contractor who cleans up after himself, if there are any left out there these days.
