In the past month the company has come 4 times. The first time the workman said the door was too heavy for him to lift. He didn't try to do so. He wrote a work order for two repairmen. The next morning my contractor lifted the door -- easily. I called Overhead Door. They sent out two workmen who replaced the springs and got the door back on track, but it wasn't level or centered in the opening. They also forgot to install the sweep and weather stripping. We had paid them so I called Overhead Door. They sent a repairman who said the door was tilted because my garage floor wasn't level. I called Overhead Door and pointed out that the door has leveling bolts. My contractor bought weather stripping and installed it. He also leveled the door. Today a repainman came to install the sweep. I came home to find that the sweep is about two inches over to one side so there is an opening on the left and the right side is crumpled.
I'm going to call a handyman to fix it. I can't stand to talk to this company again. I don't know what's happened, but their current repairmen are inept.
I called Overhead Door and was able to make an appointment for an estimate within two days of my phone call. Brian Jarrett, residential sales representative, arrived punctually, on the day and time agreed upon. He was the third of four company representatives I interviewed (Comfortable Home Solutions, Precision Overhead Garage Door Service, Superior Fireplace and Garage Door and Fred C. Johnson Co.). Mr. Jarrett and Bob Swigert of Fred C. Johnson Co. were by far the two most knowledgeable reps. Both were professional, could answer all my questions to my satisfaction and did not try to sell me something I did not want. I would have felt comfortable using either Overhead Door or Fred C. Johnson. In the end it was my impression that the quality of door offered by Overhead Door was superior to Clopay doors offered by Fred C. Johnson.
I was replacing 30 year old wood composite doors that were of exceptionally high quality ? though the wood was rotting on the bottom panels. I have never seen doors as substantial, even in commercial settings. So I was a little apprehensive about replacing those doors with metal doors that seem to be much less sturdy. But I was finally won over by the argument that, at least some of the metal doors, come with a life-time warranty. The polyurethane insulated doors seemed to be the most substantial of the lot. The ones I chose (I went with what was described to me as commercial grade doors) have an R-value rating of 17.5, the highest of any door that was offered to me by any rep.
I placed my order with Overhead Door on May 2nd, 2011 by faxing in a signed proposal. Because I had requested brown doors they had to be special ordered. Brian told me that might take 5 weeks. I was not in a hurry, so that was fine with me. I received a call from Brian on May 23rd saying the factory had indicated the doors would arrive in Baltimore on May 30th and based on Overhead Door?s service schedule, I could have the doors installed on June 3rd. Because I was traveling, I had to postpone installation until June 7th.
The installer was due to arrive between 8:30 and 9:30. He actually arrived at 8:10. His pickup was brimming over with stuff. I left him to his task. After a couple of hours I went to see how he, Victor (didn?t get his last name) was doing. To my amazement he had removed the old doors and had several panels of each of the two new doors in place. I absolutely could not figure out how he, singlehanded, managed to get the runners in place and the panels mounted. Being a mechanical type I decided to hang around and watch. For me, one of my joys is to watch a good craftsman in action. Victor was really fun to watch. He clearly had installed many overhead doors before. There were no wasted motions. Tools and parts and the positioning of his ladder were right where they needed to be for him to perform the next step in the procedure. Victor took no breaks. He worked through lunch. He showed me how everything worked, when over safety issues and lastly programmed the Homelink buttons in my two cars. The workspace was spotless when he left.
Needless to say this was a positive experience. Now it is up to the doors to perform as advertised.
