After being grossly overcharged several times for repairs at the local (Sharrett) Mazda dealer, I used Angie's List to assist in finding a reputable car repair facility that would do a good job with ripping me off. I am mechanically apt but in February without a garage I wanted someone else to perform the repair. I went in to Shell to make an appointment and dropped the vehicle off the next day.
This particular make and model is prone to mysterious stalling when hot and is caused by multiple electrical part failures. The local Mazda dealer is trained to change parts according to what the computer tells the mechanic to change. These stalls at highway speeds do not show up on the computer readout so the dealer is totally stumped. The Miata enthusists discuss the issue online and this is where I found the solution. I am picky on the quality of replacement parts so I mail ordered the genuine Mazda parts from Rosenthal Mazda in norhern Virginia because they were over $175 cheaper than Sharrett Mazda for the same parts!
I provided the two parts to Shell so all they had to was exchange them out. I estimate the actual time to complete the job would be between an hour and an hour and a half. Shell seemed to be busy with several cars waiting to be serviced. Two days later they called and informed me that thae car was ready for pick up. I was satisfied on the labor charge, again less than the dealer, and the work completed. I recommend Virginia Avenue Shell.

They did it again...an excellent and honest job! My anti-lock brake light came on and my SUV didn't pass emissions inspection so I bought the part for emissions planning on installing it myself but had problems. I took the part and the SUV to them and they gladly installed the part just charging me very little for the install. They charged me $79.00 to hook up to the diagnostic for the anti-lock brake light when everyone else wanted $100.00 + to do it. They called telling me it only needed sensors when I believe they could have told me anything. They are one of the most honest auto repair places I've ever dealt with. Will go back for sure.

This place was amazing. My daughter took her car in because she thought she needed brakes. They could have told her anything but instead they called to ask what noise she was hearing because she didn't need brakes. They told her how much wear was left on the brakes and left it up to her to fix it. We decided to fix the back brakes since there wasn't much left on the back. How honest they were and didn't try to take advantage. I will use them for our own cars and would recommend highly.

Brought car in for brake work, tires, oil change, winterize, fix light, fix door seal. Mechanic called me and discovered a more serious problem with the brakes, but made recommendations and money saving suggestions and was empathetic at the ordeal of expensive car repairs at Christmas time. I use these guys all the time and they never disappoint. The work was done better than expected and I spent less than expected.

It went great i called on a wed took my truck in on Thursday morning and got my truck back that afternoon.

First of all, I started this report to rate the business overall, since I am a regular customer at Virgina Ave. Shell. The "work description" section is what I use them for the most, however, not limited to that alone. With that said, I want to say my husband and I support small businesses as much as we possibly can. It truly makes us feel great to have an ongoing relationship with our local businesses, and Sullivan's Virgina Ave. Shell is one of the best in the area! The owner, Danny Sullivan, is a great gentleman. He is always pleasant and willing to go the extra mile for anyone that comes to his shop. The most important thing I would have to say is, as a woman, I don't feel like I am being duped into spending more than is necessary to fix my problem. If there is something wrong with my vehicle, I know that one of the mechanics there is willing to EXPLAIN IT to me until I fully understand. This is the utmost importance to me. They are not the type of people to "fix the problem first" and then give you an unexpected bill (SURPRISE!) - the worst possible thing to happen for me. If it is something that will need diagnosed, they do the necessary testing and then it is up to you whether this is what you want accomplished. They are knowledgeable and reasonably priced, two very good qualities in my book! And all of their work is honest - if by chance something isn't right or you're not satisfied, they make it right. I have never had a bad experience yet, and they are the only place I have ever taken any of our vehicles in the past 10-15 years - which is quite a few cars! If I had to give one constructive criticism for Virgina Ave. Shell, it would be that they are not always punctual with contacting the clients; whether it's to tell them the work is finished, or discussing with the client if they are comfortable with fixing the problem once it is diagnosed, it seems that this does not always happen as quickly as some people may expect. I'd say 1 out of 5 times this has happened, but I did want to give an honest and helpful rating of this merchant. I really hope this helps someone with their decision - something that I would gladly do for any small business that has treated my husband and I as well as Virgina Ave. Shell has treated us! :)
