Roofing
The contract was signed on May 9, 2011 with a downpayment of $6,000.00. The contractor showed up for work only sporadically with reasons such as death of grandmother, hospitalization of son, he himself was sick, etc. On the days he reported he started late in the day and left early. We suspected that the work was not up to standard so we paid a certified home/roof inspector to make an assessment of the work. Among his findings were gaps between the plywoods and leaks to be corrected.
The contractor promised to make the adjustment when we brought these to his attention in writing. Almost 6 months from the signing of the contract the roof is unfinished, the attic was a mess with rain coming through the unfinished part of the roof and we were out by $12,000.
We spent extra to hire a person to do the clean up. When it was clear on October 17 , 2011 that the contractor was not coming back to work, we reported him to the BBB who attempted to reach him for an explanation. BBB also suggested that we make a report to the MD Home Improvement Commission. In due course, MDHIC filed a criminal case against the contractor for leaving the job and working without a license. I was called as a witness. He was convicted in the District Court of Washington County in Hagerstown, MD in November 2012.
While the court case was ongoing, we hired another contractor who removed everything the previous contractor installed to start from scratch. He completed the roof in five weeks.
