When I dropped off the trumpet on October 9, 2011, I was told that it would be finished by the first week in December. I finally was able to pick it up yesterday, March 23rd, nearly four months after the original completion date.
I did not want to rush the work or be a nuisance, so I did not call the first time to check on it until about December 10th, at which time I was told vaguely that it should be done sometime after the first of the year.
I called again on about January 15th and was told that it might be done by the beginning of February.
This continued up until the day I got the horn. Time would go by and I would have to call to see what was happening. Every time I would be told that the horn was being delayed at a subcontractor and someone needed to call the subcontractor and see what was happening. L&L said that they would call me back, but only did so on two occasions (out of at least a dozen).Every other time, I had to call, ask what was happening, and then call back the next day to get the answer. At one point, "Steve" the owner, promised me - gave me "his word as the owner" that he would call me back the next business day with answers. He never called. I waited three days and then went to the store to try to get some action. Even after that, he never called.
Every time I spoke to anyone, they blamed everything on the subcontractor and seemed annoyed that I was not more understanding of their difficulty. They said that they were yelling at the sub "on my behalf".
I work with subs all the time myself and sometimes this happens. What outrages me was not the failure of their sub (their sub - not mine. They chose him and are responsible for him) but their complete unwillingness to do anything, their refusal to keep in touch with me, even after four months of waiting. Their attitude was that I should just leave them alone and they would let me know when the work was done, however long that took.
When I finally picked up the horn, Steve knocked 10% off of the cost. Now, he had told me that it would not exceed $1,500 and the total cost was, coincidently, $1,500. So he knocked off $150 from an already inflated price. Actually, there are lots of good places online that will do this work for $1,200, but I thought it better to get it done locally.
When I examined the horn I found that the work had not been done well. The third valve slide is stuck, the plating is incomplete, and there are stains all over the horn. I took it back and asked for a refund, and Steve told me he could not do it because "this is a business". He finally agreed to refund $200 and was clearly unhappy to do so. I took the $200 and left because I am sick of him and just wanted to be done with the whole experience. Steve never apologized at all for anything that had occurred. He was cold, rude and uncaring. It was clearly his opinion that I was a troublemaker.
I will add this - I was also disappointed with the way this turned out because I have two other horns that I want to have extensive work done on, and I was hopeful that I had found a local place to get them done. Oh well...
Again, stay away from these people. They might be fine for pulling stuck mouthpieces for kids, but with their attitude of disdain for their customers, I wouldn't even trust them with that. You can't work with people who work with incompetent subs, and who take such little pride in their work, and who have a complete lack of respect for their customers.
