I was very impressed with Mr. Hawkins ability to solve the problem and his impressive fairness in not charging for his service.  I certainly will call him when I am ready to replace the kitchen floor.

The workmanship was excellent and we're very pleased with the result.  Hawkins planned and executed all the work so that our tenant was able to occupy the apartment throughout the project, which was very important to her.  All work was performed in accordance with the condo's rules and there were no complaints from any of the nearby residents.

From the initial visit for the estimate, to the scheduling of the work, to the work itself, to the follow through - it was all top notch.  I really have nothing negative to say.  Hawkins was the only vendor (of 4) to make suggestions on how to better install the floors, recommend against ideas we had even though it would have been more work for them.  Every other vendor just wrote it down and quoted it up.  Hawkins worked with us.
The quality of work is outstanding!  "Josh" and "Tony" are 2 top notch craftsman, polite, hardworking, and respectful.  There was an issue with the delivery of the wood (wrong type), and Hawkins took care of it, got the right wood into the house for acclaimation, and adjusted the schedule without missing a beat.
The price was the best value, and almost the lowest.  They allowed me to do some prep work to reduce the cost, and managed with one major item I didnt complete.
Bottom line - I highly recommend Hawkins Floors.

The end result was beautiful, but there were problems.  The main issue was that the guy who did the tile installation also did the shoe molding, and his first attempt at that was pretty awful.  There were visible gaps between the shoe molding and the baseboard in places, and other related issues with both the molding and the threshold strips.  We complained about it and he came back the next day with a supervisor to redo the molding and threshold strips.  The supervisor was very responsive to our concerns and made sure that the job was done right.
They did not do a great job of keeping dust out of other rooms, and their cleanup at the end was not very good.
They initially told us that the job would take 2 days and possibly 3.  As soon as they arrived to start the work, we were told 3 days and possibly 4.  In the end it took 5 days, in part because of the mess with the shoe molding.
As I said, the result was beautiful, and they clearly want the customer to be happy, so I can't ding them too badly.  We would use them again, but we'd be careful to check their work as they went along.

Response from Hawkins Floor Co
"Hawkins floor company makes every effort to get jobs done on time and completely. As our customer put in her comment, she did not call us to talk about any installation issues, if she had we would have taken care of them quickly. I believe the reason for the $100.00 discount was for daycare for the children the following day. Every job presents its challenges, we try our best to overcome any obstacle we find on a job and complete it to the satisfaction of the customer."

I thought the quality of their product was good. I thought they were honest with me about what I wound get value for my money for an upgrade or not. I thought they gave me good information. I didn't thought they would just fine to take my my money. There was an issue when they did the vinyl because whoever had measured the vinyl, there was an issue on the day they came. They didn't had  enough vinyl but they made it right. It was an honest mistake, they admitted and they had the vinyl the next day, so I will still use them again. They made good on it and it wasn't issue. I thought the pricing was very good.

I used Hawkins a number of years ago to refinish my upstairs floor due to their dust-free sanding.  At that time, I was very satisfied with the job (and would have given an A in all categories) so I did not bid the new job of installing new wood floors in our kitchen.  This time, it was clear that the company was stretched way too thin for the job.  I had to reach out three times by email and leave phone messages before I could confirm the date they would come.  When the workers came the first day, they had no knowledge of what needed to be done so left.
The second day, a new contractor came to remove the existing floors.  He had to saw around the cabinets and left considerable residue in the basement below the kitchen.  I also instructed the management that the refrigerator would need to be removed and despite telling it to three different workers, they were not prepared to do so.  Other contractors working in the house ended up moving it for us.  This process took two days.
When the installation crew came on the fourth day, they arrived 90 minutes later than we were told.  I was shocked to find that they were sawing wood inside the kitchen, leaving a thick layer of saw dust all over the first floor of the house.  The installation team rushed through the job, and did not clean up adequately.  The company was well aware that I was using their services because of my severe allergies.  I wrote to them, requesting that one of the supervisors visit the house to oversee the job.
When the third crew came to sand and stain the floor, there were issues with matching the stain color to the existing wood floor.  The crew member had been instructed by his manager to clean the dust left behind by the previous crew; however, there were still thick layers of dust on all the furniture and other floors throughout the first floor.  Again, I wrote to the management and indicated my concerns, telling them that I was prepared to write a critical review here.  Finally, Carl Hawkins called and offered to come by to visit the job (this was on the very last day of applying the second coat of polyurethane).  They acknowledged that they were stretched thin and apologized, but I indicated to them that I was extremely disappointed by the lack of quality, supervision and care this time around, particularly given their dust-free marketing.
In the end, the overall look of the floor is fine (which is why I gave a C and not a D), but this was in no way a dust-free job and there was poor communication between managers and their workers, and with the client.

The estimate process was rather easy and straight forward. This means they showed up on time and when they said they would (it is rather surprising how difficult that can be for contractors).
The 2 man crew was rather personable, nice couple of guys. They seemed to be concerned with doing a good quality job.
The system they use is very low dust - well, dust free in my opinion. I suppose technically it was not 100% dust free, but pretty close.
Everything was looking fantastic after the sanding, even after the stain - but the quality started to degraded when the clearcoat layers were applied.
This was bad enough that I had to ask for Carl Hawkins (part owner I gather) to come inspect the job and give me his opinion. Sure enough, when came over, he said the floor should not look like that and that he would offer to sand and apply one more layer of clearcoat at no charge. This showed a lot of integrity on his part.
We would not be able to schedule the repair for months down the road - not due to them, but due to our scheduling challenges. When we finally got the work done, the floor did look better, but I definitely noticed that some imperfections were still there.
About a year later, I ended up using another company to refinish another level in the house and their work did not leave anywhere near the number of imperfections that Hawkins did.
All in all, they seem like a great group of people that stand behind their work - I just was not happy with the quality of the finished product.

The space to be floored was small -- only about 6' X 9', plus a small closet  -- but the challenge was that the new area was a concrete slab that was not truly level with the existing floor to which the new section would be integrated.  The estimator, Carl, had great ideas to solve the problem, and the installer did a great job making everything level and matched.  Once the entire foyer was sanded, re-stained and finished, the transition was invisible.

The project was executed quickly, during the Christmas holidays -- we were able to open the area for the holiday and the finishing was done the following week.  Cleanup was well done -- only annoyance was that their sanding equipment kept throwing the circuit breakers during the work.  It is a very noisy process -- be aware of that.  Overall we are very pleased and will consider this company again to redo the rest of the hardwood in the house.

Excellent communication.  The work was done exactly as had been discussed.  The crew was polite and professional, clear in what needed to be done and when it would be done.     The flooring is old,  is over concrete and has had some replacement tiles over time, as well as some nail holes and gouges.    The final floor looks like new.   Will be using Hawkins for additional refinishing in the next few months and have recommended the company to friends.

We had a real good experience with them. They were really helpful and they did a really good job. They actually were the ones who put the flooring in when our house was built and we didn’t have any control over that in 1986 but we did last fall of 2010 and we chose to go back to them for flooring. I noticed that in one section in the flooring there was a little crack in it; it could have been there before. I brought it to my husband’s attention and we called them and they came out. It was actually a member of the Hawkins family that came out. They have people that work with them and everything but he actually came out. He said that the crack had probably been there for a while because there was dirt in it, so he sent someone out and they fully cleaned out where the dirt was and then they sealed that little crack and it is fine. The crack was probably about two and a half to three inches or maybe a little less. They left a tool here and we called them to let them know that but they just forgot about it, so I took it over there because I had an appointment and they were very appreciative that I returned the tool. I still get the floor cleaners from them directly. They are very friendly in the office and everything. I don’t think there was any charge at all to fix the crack. I think it was under some form of warranty because it has only been a year. When I told the guy that the flooring was done a year ago he was surprised that it was holding up well. It is really good flooring. I wasn’t involved in the pricing part of it, so I do not know how to rate them on price. My husband would not have gone with them if it wasn’t a fair price. My husband used to be in the real estate development when he was young and he knows a lot about housing and building and things like that. I don’t think he would have ever gone with them if he didn’t feel that they were fair. Sometimes, we can get really good price on the flooring but then the workmanship may not be good. Their workmanship was excellent. It was one solid piece of flooring and they took it out like on our driveway and they measured it and cut it perfectly. They also put flooring in our upstairs bathroom. They were very very precise and worked very hard. They were just top. The builders of this house came from California and they must have obviously looked for a local flooring company and we went right back to Hawkins Floor Co. They actually put the flooring in for our house.
