The workmanship was excellent and we're very pleased with the result. Hawkins planned and executed all the work so that our tenant was able to occupy the apartment throughout the project, which was very important to her. All work was performed in accordance with the condo's rules and there were no complaints from any of the nearby residents.
The quality of work is outstanding! "Josh" and "Tony" are 2 top notch craftsman, polite, hardworking, and respectful. There was an issue with the delivery of the wood (wrong type), and Hawkins took care of it, got the right wood into the house for acclaimation, and adjusted the schedule without missing a beat.
The price was the best value, and almost the lowest. They allowed me to do some prep work to reduce the cost, and managed with one major item I didnt complete.
Bottom line - I highly recommend Hawkins Floors.
They did not do a great job of keeping dust out of other rooms, and their cleanup at the end was not very good.
They initially told us that the job would take 2 days and possibly 3. As soon as they arrived to start the work, we were told 3 days and possibly 4. In the end it took 5 days, in part because of the mess with the shoe molding.
As I said, the result was beautiful, and they clearly want the customer to be happy, so I can't ding them too badly. We would use them again, but we'd be careful to check their work as they went along.
"Hawkins floor company makes every effort to get jobs done on time and completely. As our customer put in her comment, she did not call us to talk about any installation issues, if she had we would have taken care of them quickly. I believe the reason for the $100.00 discount was for daycare for the children the following day. Every job presents its challenges, we try our best to overcome any obstacle we find on a job and complete it to the satisfaction of the customer."
The second day, a new contractor came to remove the existing floors. He had to saw around the cabinets and left considerable residue in the basement below the kitchen. I also instructed the management that the refrigerator would need to be removed and despite telling it to three different workers, they were not prepared to do so. Other contractors working in the house ended up moving it for us. This process took two days.
When the installation crew came on the fourth day, they arrived 90 minutes later than we were told. I was shocked to find that they were sawing wood inside the kitchen, leaving a thick layer of saw dust all over the first floor of the house. The installation team rushed through the job, and did not clean up adequately. The company was well aware that I was using their services because of my severe allergies. I wrote to them, requesting that one of the supervisors visit the house to oversee the job.
When the third crew came to sand and stain the floor, there were issues with matching the stain color to the existing wood floor. The crew member had been instructed by his manager to clean the dust left behind by the previous crew; however, there were still thick layers of dust on all the furniture and other floors throughout the first floor. Again, I wrote to the management and indicated my concerns, telling them that I was prepared to write a critical review here. Finally, Carl Hawkins called and offered to come by to visit the job (this was on the very last day of applying the second coat of polyurethane). They acknowledged that they were stretched thin and apologized, but I indicated to them that I was extremely disappointed by the lack of quality, supervision and care this time around, particularly given their dust-free marketing.
In the end, the overall look of the floor is fine (which is why I gave a C and not a D), but this was in no way a dust-free job and there was poor communication between managers and their workers, and with the client.
The 2 man crew was rather personable, nice couple of guys. They seemed to be concerned with doing a good quality job.
The system they use is very low dust - well, dust free in my opinion. I suppose technically it was not 100% dust free, but pretty close.
Everything was looking fantastic after the sanding, even after the stain - but the quality started to degraded when the clearcoat layers were applied.
This was bad enough that I had to ask for Carl Hawkins (part owner I gather) to come inspect the job and give me his opinion. Sure enough, when came over, he said the floor should not look like that and that he would offer to sand and apply one more layer of clearcoat at no charge. This showed a lot of integrity on his part.
We would not be able to schedule the repair for months down the road - not due to them, but due to our scheduling challenges. When we finally got the work done, the floor did look better, but I definitely noticed that some imperfections were still there.
About a year later, I ended up using another company to refinish another level in the house and their work did not leave anywhere near the number of imperfections that Hawkins did.
All in all, they seem like a great group of people that stand behind their work - I just was not happy with the quality of the finished product.
The project was executed quickly, during the Christmas holidays -- we were able to open the area for the holiday and the finishing was done the following week. Cleanup was well done -- only annoyance was that their sanding equipment kept throwing the circuit breakers during the work. It is a very noisy process -- be aware of that. Overall we are very pleased and will consider this company again to redo the rest of the hardwood in the house.
