I bought a discount voucher from Amazon Local for cleaning one return duct and all the ancillary vents, along with a dryer vent, services to be performed by "Advanced Air Care."
The "technician" called to confirm my location before arriving. He was two hours early for the appointment, but I was at home and could accommodate him. When he called, there was no mention of "Advanced Air Care." As he was pulling up to the house, I got a call from someone--a dispatcher, I assume--who asked about scheduling their visit earlier. I said their truck looked like it was just arriving. He also failed to identify the company; and the truck was unmarked. The caller ID made no reference to "Advanced Air Care" or to an individual.
When the workmen came to the door, I asked for their business-card. The fellow said he had none; nor any uniform indicating the company.. Instead he showed me his invoice on the clipboard: it was from "EnviroCaire." It's rather odd to have a competitor's invoice on your clipboard! However, I let them in, and they proceeded to bring in their equipment, cleaning ducts, I assume. In any case, I quickly checked Angie's List for any "EnviroCaire" listing. Of course, there it was, with a long string of F-marks. What was telling, was that the workmen immediately started trying to sell me additional expensive procedures, such as cleaning the coils in the furnace, the same behavior decried in every review for EnviroCaire.
Reading and experiencing all this while they were wandering around the house, I instructed them to just do what was outlined in the voucher. When it came time to sign off on the invoice, they produced one from "Advanced Air Duct & Carpet Care." I once again asked for identification, but the workman wouldn't comply till I had signed off on the invoice. After signing it, I had to again asked for identification. The fellow grew quite defensive, but did show me a driver's license--for two seconds!
After their truck had driven off, I opened up the main return which they had ostensibly cleaned: the duct was coated with dust!
There's a reason "vendors" don't identify themselves: it's because they don't want to be identified and held accountable. Stay away from these guys!
"[member name removed], We do apologize if the service wasn't 100% satisfactory, if you would have called us about any issue, we would have sent the technician back immediately! The technician that preformed the work is a sub contractor that works for several local companies. We sometimes use sub contractors in cases we are short staffed, a standard practice in any service company. The other companies the sub works for are unrelated to us and the service provided would be rendered to our high standards, regardless to who is preforming it. That being said, I would be more then happy to redo any service you think was done incorrectly or incomplete. Our customer service team is available 7 days a week @ 866-626-1196 to schedule an appointment. Please contact me directly for any issues or scheduling at [email protected]. Sincerely, Steve Schayner."
