Hometown Tree Experts

We contacted Hometown after purchasing an Angie's List deal. They came out to perform an estimate for our work promptly and emailed a proposal within a day. We were told that there would be a delay in service due to residual clean up operations following the June storm, so the long gap after our acceptance of the proposal was not unexpected. What we were disappointed in was the inability of the company to give us a firm date, even after a month-long delay. As it turned out, we never did receive a date in advance, but were sent an email the day they were to come informing us of the fact. Problem was, we were out of town. While this did not prevent them from doing the work, it did prevent us from being around to make sure things were done as we desired. We couldn't object to this procedure since we didn't receive the email until the work was completed. The work was performed well and according to the proposal. Our only complaint was that some waste was left on the premises (in the woods behind the house). It's possible that this was the result some activity by our next door neighbor, who also has had tree work done in the past, but since we were not able to be around, we have no way of knowing for sure. We just wish we could have been around to approve of the work when it was performed.

The estimator came out initially in September and after looking at the yard and talking with him we decided to do more than just a couple of trees. He marked removals with tape, and used spray paint for the trees to trim. The company's schedule was busy and so it was about 4-5 weeks before they could do the work. In the interim there was a bad wind storm and we decided that we needed to change the trees we were taking out - also, by then all the paint that marked for trimming was washed away. The estimator did come back out and re-priced what we needed to change, but did not have the materials with him to remark the trees (so none of the trees to trim were identified). The crew came to do the work 2 days before thanksgiving and brought in a big crane to use in taking the trees out. I had been told the estimator would come in the AM to be sure the crew knew about what trees to remove/trim. Fortunately I was able to delay going to work that day and was here when the crew came because the estimator did not come and it was left to me to work with the crew chief - Shawn. The whole crew was great. The crane operator was here early & was very careful getting to the woods - he put down panels on the grass he had to back over so the lawn was protected. Shawn was very professional & helpful and worked with me to figure out which trees to do the work on. They cleaned up everything when they left and were done sooner than we expected. Bottom line, the tree crew & work was great. We had some difficulties with the scheduling & the estimator - part of it was our fault because we changed the original work.

He showed up and the service was great. It took about six to eight weeks for him to come out because there were so many trees down in the area. They never called to make an appointment to my home. One day, I received a bill from them in the mail. I sent them an email explaining that I would have appreciated them notifying me when they came to do the work. However, I thought I received a very good deal for the work performed. They did an outstanding job! They did such a good job with the cleanup work that I did not even know they came that day.

We were able to communicate effectively by email, which for me was a plus. They showed up at the end of the day unannounced, which was a little surprising (we had not set a firm date for services), but it was fine because the work was all external and required no assistance from me to access the work site. They did the job quickly and cleaned up after themselves well. There was no residual mess. The team was friendly and very professional. They knew what they were doing and I would gladly have them back.

I purchased the Angie's List Big Deal and Hometown immediately contacted me to set up an estimate. They came out at the scheduled time, and the price was very reasonable. After I received the estimate I paid a deposit for half the amount (the total estimate was for $1200, but the Big Deal was $250 for $500 of work, so that left a remaining amount of $700) and expected to hear back on when they would come do the work, but there was no word from Hometown. Eventually I called and they said it would be about 3-4 weeks after received the deposit. Four weeks came and went, still no word from Hometown. Finally they came out about 5 weeks after the initial deposit, and they did a really good job. The yard was nice and clean after they finished, and grass has grown in over the stumps and dead tree!

Overall the logistics were frustrating and the capacities of the company did not appear to offer the in depth tree knowledge I was looking for. The work that was finally accomplished was adequate.

They were wonderful. I really liked the fact that they came out and did what they were supposed to do. They cleaned up everything, so I didn't have to worry about anything when they left. They were very nice, polite, and professional. I was very pleased with them. I highly recommend them and I would definitely use them again.

The project had to be adjusted from the initial estimate, but they were willing to work with us. They showed up on time with enough staff to complete the job. Overall we had a great experience and will definitely use them again.

owner gave estimate and suggestions. Knows trees and how they should be cut. He suggested we be here because we knew what we wanted. Every homeowner should participate in his tree cutting process. Owner came with the crew and went over the details. Supervisor, who offered advice and has been trimming trees for many years, then followed through with us. Efficient, knew what they were doing and willing to give us an opinion that may have differed from ours. We respect that. Worked until we were happy with result. Neighbor also came over for help and used them to do some tree cutting and was very pleased.

Thsi was a difficult project that went very well. The work was completed rapidly and with great attention to detail. I now have a nice lawn coming in where I had total mud before.

Overall, i was a bit disappointed in the cost and the service. The price was high even with the Angie's List deal.

Hometown was great. Very responsive and friendly. Came out to talk with me and was very knowledgeable and gave me several options for my budget. The work completed was done well and everything removed as promised. I would work with them again.

Not Good. It was an Angies deal - had the estimate but it went downhill from there. Contract took 3 versions, check was lost initially and 3/4 promised dates to perform service were not honored. Therefore I cancelled and received a refund. No service was ever performed.

They were lovely and efficient. Still waiting for new plant.

Once the crew finally arrived on 8/17 they went about their business and did a very good job of trimming and cleanup.

We were very pleased with the service. We were contacted by their office associate shortly after purchasing the Angie's DEAL and a date was set to get an estimate. This was just a few days after the major derecho in June that took out hundreds of trees in the region. I was surprised how quickly they came out and scheduled service, which was NOT a result of the storms. The crew was very efficient and did a great job of cleaning up all of the debris in the yard. The stump removal was completed within a week of the tree removal and again the work was well performed and well cleaned up. I would definitely use this company again as their prices and quality of work were top rate.

This company seems very disorganized and unresponsive. It was difficult to get them to respond after I accepted and paid a deposit on their proposal. Then it took them two months to actually get the work done, after I had already paid for most of it. My calls and e-mails went unanswered. When I finally got someone, she was totally clueless about what to do. Then on the day they were supposed to show up, they were supposed to come between 8 and noon. When 1:00 went by and they hadn't arrived or bothered to call, I went to work. At 5:00 I got a call that they were there, so I had to dash out from work to get home and show them what to do. Once they got there and started working, the crew seemed competent. It was the entire time up to that point that was extremely frustrating. I certainly will never use this company again, and I will never use Angie's list again.

After some mis-communication, it went ok. The company advertised an Angie's List discount special the same week as a huge storm hit our area, so I know they were probably swamped with work due to that combination of events. They cashed my deposit check but never contacted me about a date for doing the work. I called at least two times and was treated rather brusquely both times - again, I think it may have been due to the volume of work. But neither time could they give me a time estimate when they would be able to arrive to do the work. On the third call, when I emphasized that this was a rental property and the renter could not safely use the shed because a giant tree was perched on top of it, the receptionist then said "oh, no one said the tree was on a structure!" and had workmen out the next day (although she failed to tell me she was going to do that). The information about the tree being on a structure should have been written into the original estimate by the person who came out to bid the job - not sure why I had to be the one to tell them. I had requested specifically that they call one day in advance since this was a rental property - they did not ever call me to tell me they were coming. The job took two days, and because they never communicated with me, it was not clear that they planned to come back the second day. When I reviewed the work after the first day, the job was half done and the yard was a wreck! I "assumed" they would come back but since they didn't communicate with me, I didn't know. I waited to see what would happen and they did indeed come back the next day. Ultimately they did a nice job and cleaned everything up. But their lack of communication all along was not ideal. They should have contacted me as soon as they received my deposit, they should have contacted me a day in advance as they had told me they would do, and when it was going to take two days, they should have let me know so I didn't have to wonder about it.

We had him come out and do an estimate and he later told us that he wouldn't honor the coupon unless we agreed have him do additional work. We wanted the coupon honored first then would wait to see how the work was before we hired him for another job. We were not pleased with this and ended up getting a refund for the deal we purchased.

I called Hometown on August 1st to get an estimate for removing the tree prior to August 11th when we were having work done on our front windows. Although they were apparently in the midst of moving their office, they were very responsive to our situation. We were out of town for a week, communicating by phone and emai. They came while we were gone to look at the tree, emailed us an estimate and scheduled to take the tree down on August 9th. They arrived promply in the afternoon and the crew did a great job, being careful not to damage the surrounding shrubs, and cleaning up the resultant leaves and debris. We were able to take advantage of their big deal offer which lowered the price from the estimate. Overall it was a very positive experience and I recommend them highly.

Estimate given on 7/8/2012 originally higher ($800 - $110 higher than the next highest estimate; $200 higher than the lowest estimate) but the estimator allowed a $50.00 discount if I could wait for a "week or so" until the more pressing jobs (storm damage) in the area was attended to. I agreed expecting the work to be competed by 7/20/2012. The discounted estimate was higher than other quotes I had received, but I had already bought and paid for the Angie's List coupon so I was committed. In the long run I saved $250 off their price with the coupon but waited over long for completion of the task and on the surface paid a higher price The next day I received an email crediting the Angie's List payment (of $500 worth of work pre-paid) and requesting a down payment of $125 (50% of the remaining total due). The email stated that work would not be scheduled until the payment had arrived. I responded immediately but they accept checks only which added US mail delivery time into the mix. Nothing happened for the next two weeks. Frustrated, I called on July 30 wondering when they were planning to complete the contract. I was told over the phone that the trees would be removed by August 10 (another 2 weeks). I was clear that I was not happy with the delay. The next day the truck arrived and removed the trees. If I had not called, I wonder when the work wold have been completed.

Extremely well, very professional and quick. I would recommend this company to others without reservation.
