Flooring
This is a review for work done a few years ago, but to this day still bothers me. We spent a lot on money on beautiful wide-plank wood flooring. The company we purchased the flooring from recommended this company as a great installer who specialized in wide-plank floors. We strongly disagree.
This wood was unfinished and to save money, I said I would stain and seal the floor. I just needed it installed. This flooring requires no sanding; it's ready to stain. The area it was installed in was a gutted kitchen with only a free-standing range sitting in the middle of the kitchen.
They came and installed and it seemed fine at first, but I noticed black scuff marks everywhere from their shoes. Instructions for this wood specifically say not to wear black-soled shoes. When I was cleaning the floor with mineral spirits in prep to stain it, the scuffs would not clean up. I called the owner/manger and at first, he basically argued me saying that this is why I should have got them to finish the wood too! I let him know that it should not matter who's finishing it, the fact is there are scuff marks and they need to be removed now. Well, guess what, they had to SAND the wood to remove it....my brand new wood that required no sanding and now it's pattern could be changed. There are of course sanding marks from the machine they used in some areas of the floor. Oh, might I also add that they guy sanding didn't want to sand my entire floor. I noticed my stove never moved and asked if he sanded where it was. He says "well aren't you going to build an island here anyway?" Just because today I have plans to build an island there doesn't mean my plans won't change for this gutted kitchen. How hard is it to simply slide a regular-size stove range over??! Really unbelievable.
Next step, they were to install some "antique" nails. This is mostly for looks. The instructions for these nails basically shows the pattern you put the nails in. I even gave this booklet to the guy. He promptly puts on his ear phones and drives these nails along each and every joist. Now my floor looks like a football field with yard lines. There was not staggered pattern at all, and there is no going back and fixing that as these nails leave large holes in your wood! We spent so much money and this guy just basically lines our joists with these nails! Luckily the stain I used was a medium brown, so once it was stained the nails didn't stand out as much, but if I was going for the natural Pine look, what would we have done?!
Finally, as many know, wood expands and shrinks with humidity levels. MD can be humid in summer and dry in winter. These wide-plank flooring experts didn't seem to understand this behavior of wood and in the winter, I have HUGE gaps between my boards. Not just minor gaps....very large.
They seem to show some impressive work on their website, but I sure didn't get that level of quality for my house. It's like they just didn't care.

The office staff I spoke to originally were very helpful and informative. They came out and did a free estimate. (They qouted me on a few different types and styles of hardwood for me to choose) Once I had choosen the wood they custom mixed a stain color to my likeing. They explained the different types of finish and let me choose which finish I wanted. They were clean and neat when they did the work and my floor looks amazing. I will recommend Majestic Wood Floors to all of my friends.
