About us

Designer Surfaces was founded in July of 1990 by two brothers with a focus on bringing the highest level of quality control to the countertop manufacturing and purchasing process. We manufacture all premium surfaces including granite, marble, soapstone, quartz from manufacturers like DuPont® Zodiaq®, Cambria®, Silestone®, Caesarstone®, LG Viatera®, Hanstone®, Q Premium Quartz and Samsung®. As well as Corian®, Livingstone®, LG Hi-Macs®, Samsung® and Formica® Solid Surface, butcher block, premium wood tops, stainless steel and more. Over the years DSU worked with several universities and engineers to create a process that yields unparalleled quality in our finished product and customer service. The desire for improving the process was driven by the brother's service in the US Navy. In the service both brothers worked as Hospital Corpsmen and provided healthcare for fellow servicemen in an environment that demands a high level of attention to detail. This formula has attracted a varied customer base and includes many local contractors, direct retail, new home builders etc...DSU also serves as the warranty replacement agent for brands like DuPont®, LG®, and Samsung® as well as maintaining working relationships with companies like Costco, Home Depot, Lowes, Masco Corporation, K-Hovanian, Beazer, Ryan Homes and many more. Designer Surfaces, at 5501 Buckeystown Pike in Frederick, took a deposit from us in February 2024 to deliver a countertop, (Don Fisher was the contact and project maager) however after repeated delays and unreturned messages we cancelled the order in early April. Mr. Fisher has not returned our deposit despite multiple attempts to reach Mr. Fisher (over a dozen calls and 3 visits to their site to request he notify their bookkeeper to cut us a check for our deposit). He has not returned our calls or provided any information since we cancelled. He has, in essence, disappeared. Based on our experience no one should do business with this company and it is beginning to look like we will have to take Mr. Fisher to court to get our deposit back or just write it off.

Their professionalism and they're located a little in theory it's not too far away from where we are but when they had to come out here was always during a rush hour time and they always did their best to get out here. They were very professional and personable, they came out one time to do the pre measurements kind of do an estimate and measurement and then another time to do the layout and then the third time was the actual install so it was just very professional everybody that came out was wonderful to wok with.

The workmen were wonderful and very careful to clean up after their work.  The company has a good selection of counter top options and they were very accommodating.  We are very pleased with the outcome and would recommend them to others.

Designer Surfaces had the best selection of materials at the best price for a kitchen countertop, when including installation. They were also willing to work in Baltimore, despite the distance to their shop in Frederick. They were a pleasure to work with, and I would be happy to recommend them or, if the time comes, go with them again. The end result is a beautiful countertop and sink that makes an old kitchen look new.

"Thank you for giving us an opportunity to work with you and I am so glad you love your beautiful new kitchen countertops; your selection of the Q quartz color Snow White was perfect! It would be a pleasure to work with you on future projects you may have and I would like to thank you in advance for the referrals you will send. Enjoy your beautiful new Kitchen!"

All in all, a very positive experience.  We set up an estimate through Costco.  The consultant was right on time and answered all our questions.  We had a few hiccups during the scheduling process, but I think that was due more to our ignorance of the process and the quirks of our house than anything else.  They were very flexible--we found our sink for a lot cheaper, and they were happy to substitute that in instead.  The counters look great--no regrets at all.

From getting the quote to the day of installation, the team at Design Surfaces was responsive, respectful, and professional.  We received a quote and went to the showroom in Urbana to see the different variety of quartz.  My wife was set on Silestone but after seeing the Obsidian Black from Hanstone she fell in love with it.  Ordered the countertop and DS came out and measured and within a week the countertop was installed.  Great service and great work from the team at Design Surfaces.

The installation went good.  After the installation it was a complete disaster.  Designer Surfaces needed to return and attempt to improve the appearance of the seam in the granite.  After their service technician, Brian Krieman used a sander/buffer, razor blade and some type of chemical compound a florescent green strip on either side of the seam appeared.  Designer Surfaces refused to do anything about this even after coming to my home and seeing the obvious problem.  The service manager, Mike Giacalone, said he had never seen anything like this before but was sure it was the natural discoloration of the granite.  After more than 15 phone calls and more than 15 voice mail messages from me, this is the conclusion Designer Surfaces has come to.  Now I have to deal with a beautiful granite counter with a noticeable seam and florescent green strips on either side.  I am currently seeking legal advice.

Showroom and warehouse staff very helpful. Finished product has numerous sharp and rough edges. Price was good. Not impressed with the installers.

The installation required two visits. The first was a measurement so they could cut the granite slab correctly. The guy that did the measurement was on time, polite and professional. When they came back to do the installation, it went well and everything looks great.

The whole project went smoothly from start to finish. I made several changes in the planning stages that were delt with quickly and with good grace. Every employee from the saleswoman, measurement person, to installers was pleasant, friendly and efficient.
Now more that 4 years later all still looks perfect.

Early in our kitchen remodel, we visited Designer Surfaces' warehouse with our contractor to select the granite for our countertops. We found two slabs that seemed perfect and saw that they were properly tagged. Our contractor made the appropriate deposit, and DS' salesperson, Michael, assured us that they would be held until the proper time to do our layout.
When that time came, our contractor confirmed the layout appointment with DS and was assured that everything was on track. When we arrived, however, Michael avoided us completely and left it to Mark in fabrication to explain that our slabs had been sold to someone else, they did not have enough of the same type in stock for our job, and no more was being imported.
A very discouraging runaround followed that included our being sent on a wild goose chase to Jessup.
The situation did, however, improve greatly once the owner himself got involved a day or two later. He (and Mark, also) tried very hard to make things right and eventually offered several fair and reasonable possibilities for resolving the situation.
In the end, we had countertops installed on the date originally scheduled. The granite is very beautiful and similar to what we originally chose. The fabrication and installation are first rate, and the workmen who came to the house were thoroughly professional.
But this is not the granite we took such great care in selecting and planned our new kitchen around, and the experience was very frustrating and upsetting.
Mistakes occur in every business--the important thing is how they are handled. Designer Surfaces--eventually--responded admirably. But it should not require a tantrum by the customer to make that happen. If they had faced up to the problem as soon as they identified it, apologized, and taken immediate steps to resolve it, I would still have given them an A rating.

Because we have so much confidence in Costco, we decided to get a bid by calling the number from the countertop display/kiosk at Costco. We were not disappointed. It was a wonderful experience working with the entire staff at Designer Surfaces. From start to finish, everyone was so professional, friendly, informative, articulate, and easy to deal with. They gave us a good, competitive price and stuck with it. We tend to take our time making decisions like this and they displayed utmost patience with us and we really appreciated it. Also, they can handle the entire job including the plumber. All this, and the countertops look terrific. We couldn't be happier.

We went to their showroom to look at samples. We took a few home to see how they would look with our kitchen cabinets/floor.After we selected the color they came out to measure and price the project for us. They helped us design it so we had more of an overhang to put our garbage pail under, some black trim in the edge to match our appliances, and design the edge type. They came to our house and removed our counters and installed the new ones with no problems. Please remember I had this done several years ago but our experience was good.
