"HARFORD APPLIANCE REPAIR SERVICE, INC.: We received notification of this job via email, subject line "You have received a new project request from an Angie's List member: [Member Name Removed] We then contacted the customer to schedule. We looked at two appliances, a GE Gas Range and a Rangehood. Our service fee is $90 for the first appliance, and $45 for each additional appliance to come to the house, diagnose the problem, and give an estimate on the repair. Our technician was unable to repair the rangehood, which needed a new vent fan motor switch and light, due to the model tag not being attached to the unit. For the range, we diagnosed that the issue the customer was having was due to a faulty bake igniter. We were given the okay from the customer to replace the part. The part cost $90.00, with $5.40 in tax. The labor associated with the job was $86.00. This is how the total bill came out to be $316.40. If you have any additional questions or need any further clarification, please don't hesitate to call our office at 410-803-0033 Rick Siebert, Owner Harford Appliance Repair Service, Inc. 410-803-0033 LANDERS APPLIANCE, INC.: We were not the service provider and these marks should not be attributed to my company. I'm not aware of the make and model of the gas range to provide specific pricing but the repair price mentioned is generically in line with pricing found in the national job rate price guide, the blue book in our industry. "[Member Name Removed], Thank you for your feedback, we appreciate all reviews. It is always our goal to help customers to their satisfaction, and we are never pleased when that is not the outcome. We did our due diligence, and researched your appliance and its parts for 2+ hours, to no resolution. At that point, it was our professional recommendation to contact the manufacturer, in hopes they would have the best resolution for you. If you have any other questions, or would like to discuss anything in further detail, please don't hesitate to call our office at 410-803-0033."
* The bad part of the experience was the price which also reflects on professionalism. I had a problem with my refrigerator and made an appointment for service. I then diagnosed the problem myself but decided to still get the service to be 100% sure and to get the refrigerator operational the same day. I called the repair service back to be sure the part would be on the truck when the technician (company owner) showed up. When he arrived, I already had the refrigerator taken apart and defrosted with the suspected bad part removed. He confirmed within about a minute that I was correct, did a quick calculation and told me the price for the repair (with his hand resting on the box holding the new part): ~$229 ( ~$60 for the part, ~$79 service fee (show up fee), and ~$90 for labor). I asked if that was the best he could do and he said he would take $10 off the price. I sucked it up and paid because I needed to get the refrigerator working and because at that point I already owed the $79 show up fee. The repair took less than 20 minutes. He was at my house for a total of about 30 minutes.
* I got Angie's list to avoid situations like this. I'm pretty disappointed. I was fine paying double the online retail price for the part in order to get the fridge fixed quickly. I was not fine with spending $160 for less than 30 minutes of work.
* Caution: The ~$79 service fee does not get applied to labor even if the repair is done on the same trip.
* Caution: The labor rate appears to be about $180 per hour (he told me that I saved myself money by having the fridge defrosted and taken apart)
* Caution: The company's website says: "Unsurpassed quality at unbeatable prices" and "Get service that's good for your wallet"
* I think that applying the service fee to labor would have been reasonable since the repair was done on the same trip. That would have dropped my cost for the 30 minute repair to $151 (without the $10 discount). This would have been fair and good for both of our wallets.
"Response to [member name removed] on Angie’s List. We at Harford Appliance Repair Service (HARS) appreciate the high marks for responsiveness and punctuality. We consider these key components in the high quality of the services we provide. We are also pleased that the customer states: “It was good to be able to get the refrigerator back in operation the same day.” The ability to complete over 80% of our service calls on the first trip is another key to the high quality of our services. Up-front pricing reflects our company’s commitment to professionalism. We always quote the $79 diagnostic fee when the customer calls and explain that parts, tax, and labor will be additional charges if the customer chooses to have the appliance repaired. The $79 service charge was quoted to [member name removed] when he called. Once the technician has diagnosed the problem at the job site, no further work is performed until the customer has been informed of the diagnosis and what the balance of the repair will be, detailing the additional charges of labor, parts, and tax. The balance of the cost of the repair was quoted up front to [member name removed] and agreed to by him. Our diagnostic fee is among the lowest charged by companies operating in our service area. The technician’s expertise and a warranty to stand behind the tech’s diagnosis are part of what is covered by the diagnostic fee. The diagnostic fee also covers a portion of the cost of doing business. No service provider can afford to “show up” at a customer’s door for free. To do so would imply there is no value to the technician’s expertise or time and there is no cost for gasoline or maintenance of a vehicle to drive to the customer’s door! When some service providers “apply” the service fee to labor, the amount of the service fee is added to the labor charge. Put another way, “applying” the service fee to labor makes it go away in name only; the service fee will be included in the labor charges most often, but always in some other portion of the bill. HARS charges a flat rate for labor according to national standards and the complexity of the service. We do not charge hourly labor rates. This means that the labor rate would be the same for the repair whether the work was done by the company owner or any other HARS technician. Charging flat rates for labor ensures that a repair costs the same for every customer and will not vary according to the length of time it takes to complete the job."
