My repeated attempts to schedule the additional work were in vain -- not receiving any timely return telephone calls from either Bill or Tracy. The voice mail I received from Bill on March 7, after I left repeated messages with both Bill and Tracy, did not set a appointment. Rather, Bill explained that he was not and quot;dismissing meand quot; but, that he did not get to the plumbing supply house that supplied my existing computerized water softener head frequently and asked that I call him so he could explain. I returned Bill's call approximately 3 hours later that same day only to leave a voice mail message for him again. I had not heard anything back from either Bill or Tracy since March 7 -- prompting me once again to call the both of them on March 31 and April 1 and leaving messages for both of them to attempt to schedule this additional work. Again, as of this writing, (April 8), my efforts were to no avail.
While Bill appeared competent, did a good job on the install of the water neutralizer, and I thought that he had a good plan of action to repair/replace the computerized head on my water softener, his non-responsiveness has effectively erroded his reputation with me to the point I would not recommend him or his company for plubming. Sadly, this result could have been avoided if Champion plumbing had simply communicated with me and with a modicum of timeliness.
The water heater is only a few years old and the plumber from Champion felt that the weeping Tand P Regulator was most likely due to high water pressure in the home. A Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV) on the main supply line reduces public water supply pressure to acceptable levels for domestic usage. My PRV was original to the house (built 1973) and was no longer reliably regulating pressure. Champion removed the old PRV and replaced with new. I looked up the part and it costs about $75 retail. The job took about 45 minutes total.
In the process of replacing the PRV, Champion unintentionally loosened some adjacent threaded connections for the county water meter. One of these connections had a slow leak and Champion didn't catch it. I noticed it before they left and they tightened up the connection, no problem. However, in my opinion, they should have caught the loose connection, so I gave a and quot;Fairand quot; rating of and quot;Cand quot; on quality. Probably just moving a little fast on a simple job. They do provide a 1-year warranty, so any call back would have been covered, but still. Also, a small area of carpet under the service area was soiled by dirty water, which I cleaned up after they left.
Overall, the plumber was helpful, listened to my concerns, fixed issues when found, and gave advice on a few other plumbing problems. Good professionalism and a personable. I would use again. I've had a bunch of contractors come through my home since I moved in two years ago and I'm pretty picky about service. My overall and quot;Band quot; would probably be an and quot;Aand quot; for a lot of people.
If you care about the water heater issue: It was determined that cold water supply pressure to the water heater was approximately 100 psi, and desirable levels are about 40-65 psi. Water expands when it is heated, so pressure in the tank is generally higher than the supply pressure. If supply pressure is too high, the pressure increase due to heating can exceed the designed release point of the Tand P Regulator Valve, causing the valve to safely release some of the stored water. This is normal operation of the valve, but not how you want your water heater to be running. In my case, adjusting the PRV to reduce supply pressure should prevent the Tand P Regulator Valve from activating regularly. FYI, my Tand P valve is designed to activate when tank pressure is greater than 150 psi (I think this is standard for most residential water heaters).
I am am not without some household plumbing experience of my own acquired over the years and was
very impressed with champions honesty and integrity, commodities of increasing scarcity in todays world and I have
dealt with other plumbers.
I will engage Champion in up coming near future kitchen and bathroom rehab projects. Highly Recommended.
