This excavation project was a big one - and very difficult! Our old pool was falling apart and needed to go, but our lot is only 50' wide and was fenced all around. There was no room to bring in heavy equipment let alone a huge dump truck loaded with tons of dirt that would be needed to fill the gaping hole left after the pool was removed. Yet, Tom seemed capable where others did not, and things worked out beautifully. Tom quoted us a very reasonable price compared to others who for one reason or another caused us to worry. Tom immediately sized up the access problem and proposed a realistic solution no one else had considered. It required using a neighbor's yard and taking down a fence, but he was confident he could protect that person's property and put everything back in good order. What we liked was how he was here every day to be sure all was going well - and he did not want any money up-front even though his contract stipulated we would pay half before he began. Instead, he asked us to wait until after he had gotten well into the project to be sure that we felt the price he had set was well worth it - and it was! What made it such a pleasure was how cooperative Tom's crew was in helping to make our yard look the way we wanted it to look without the pool. A couple of small trees were in the way, so they dug new holes for them where we wanted and gently moved them with the bucket on their cat. They even removed some rotted railroad ties at the other end of the back yard and arranged to dispose of them and tore out an ugly, old metal clothesline pole that was a real eyesore! They took anything extra we wanted to get rid of to the dump for us at no extra charge. When the hole was finally filled, they smoothed everything out over almost the entire rear yard, covering it with several inches of top soil and grass seed. It turned out very level - to great surprise - and we could not have been happier with the end result. At first, we had trouble finding anyone to do this job because of the poor access for big trucks and heavy equipment. We were also very concerned about how level the lot could be made again and if our big trees would be damaged in the process. It was a real blessing to find Tom. He is both easy-going but meticulous about his work. Where others told us they would just bury some parts of the pool in the hold, Tom refused to consider it - which really impressed me because I hated the idea of having a dump site in our backyard. He said he never buries anything, never! We were able to completely trust Tom and his people to do a great job even when it seemed an impossible task.
