Mike, who has worked with Scott for many years, did most of the construction. He had a lot of good ideas about how to get the details right, and a lot of the work was high-quality, but some really important parts weren't done right, and when we talked with Mike about it, he would say things like "it's supposed to be that way" or "it doesn't matter" when it did matter, and when it wasn't right. For example, we had a range hood installed and the first thing that went wrong was that enough room wasn't left for both the hood and the cover panels for the wall cabinets on either side of the stove. The sides of the cabinets were white, but the side panels and doors are wood, and other trim for under the cabinets is wood, so it's really important for it to look right that the cover panels be installed. We brought this to Mike's attention, and he said "it's supposed to be that way". We finally insisted that he move over the cabinets to make enough room for the cover panels, and then at the end of the job Scott told us that that was an extra charge! The hood was also installed with a 6 inch duct when the hood was made for a 7 inch duct. Using a duct that is smaller than the hood is designed for decreases how well it works and makes it noisier, but when I complained, I was just told "we always use a 6 inch duct". The worst part is that after the work on the kitchen was almost all done I removed a panel that was covering the duct and found that the 6 inch duct was just sitting inside the hood's 7 inch outlet, with an inch gap.
Mike also replaced the window over the sink and didn't seem to know how to do the aluminum trim right. There were nails through the face of the trim, and drip flashing was in some places too short and in other places not put on at all. We had to hire a company that does window replacements to redo the job.
There were many other problems and delays - drawer fronts that were put on upside down and needed to be replaced with new parts because the holes for the handles had already been drilled, reinforcing pieces for the cabinets that weren't installed and needed to be ordered again and installed later, electrical parts that took weeks of delay to order and install, appliance accessories that were accidentally thrown away with the packaging. Scott didn't seem to oversee the progress of the work very closely, and didn't seem concerned about the problems or the delays even when we brought it to his attention.
At the end, we got an extra bill including things we thought shouldn't have been extra, like installing the cover panels next to the range hood, and work on a desk drawer that had been in the original plan and that we had talked with Scott about before they even started.
There were mistakes on the Ikea order and parts had to be returned and others parts ordered causing delays.
The subway tile order caused delay.
It was hard to coordinate the work of Hapsburg, the floor installation, the tile order, electricians, and plumbers.
Habsburg was hard to communicate with and their workers were often not available because they were doing other jobs.
The work they did was excellent, high quality, and professional. I couldn't give them an A because communication was so frustrating.
The work started in July and was usable by the end of August but was not fully completed until early Oct.
