As the projected start date drew closer, we decided to scale back the scope of our project just a bit. Nelson understood our position and offered a number of helpful suggestions on how to control costs and still get the kitchen we wanted. His cost and scheduling estimates were right on target. The final amount was only $900 over the initial estimate (due to some electrical issues detected after demolition). The project also started on time and ended two days ahead of schedule.
Living through a kitchen renovation is seldom a pleasant experience, but Nelson and his team did everything in their power to minimize disruptions and surprises. He regularly communicated with us via email and phone, each time conveying the key details (who, what, why, and when) ahead of time. Questions were always answered within a matter of hours. His employees and subcontractors were also very easy to work with. The project foreman showed up each day around the same time (~7 AM) to get the subs started. Regardless of who was there on a given day (electrician, painters, flooring crew, etc.), they worked quickly and were almost always done by 3 PM.
The final result was exactly what we had been hoping for: a modern-looking kitchen with significantly greater cabinet space, more room to move, and a pleasant aesthetic. That we got this result on schedule with 'no drama' of any kind is a testament to the skill, craftsmanship, and people skills of Nelson and Peak Carpentry.
We had the best experience with Peak Cabinetry from start to finish. Their professionalism, adherence to their schedule, workmanship, and quality are top notch. We could not be happier. Their price was fair - not cheap, but a great deal for the quality. No one wants a kitchen renovation stretched out ? so it was worth it to us to find a quality company. We got 3 estimates to gut our kitchen and take down the wall between our dining room and kitchen area. When Nelson Laur came for the estimate, we liked him right away. He demonstrated excitement about our project and started digging around the house to see if we could do what we wanted to do. A huge benefit is that Nelson works with a designer from Cabinet Discounters to design your kitchen. Between Nelson?s building experience and Teresa Carney?s design, we came up with a great plan that we could never have come up with on our own. Peak Cabinetry even finished ahead of schedule, despite us adding work to the original contract and running into unexpected plumbing issues. Nelson is a great guy and clearly loves what he does. He also came up with a very clever and cost-savings idea to fix a duct work problem. He has a great team working for him and only selects the best companies to work with ? from countertops to flooring to painters. They cleaned up after every day, were very communicative, and thought of everything. We were so impressed that my in-laws are now having them do their kitchen. I can?t say enough good things. They delivered a beautiful kitchen beyond our expectations.
Our job went extremely well. Nelson and his crew were prompt (7 am start) and worked consistently through to completion of the job. No interruptions or delays. Workmanship was excellent. The painters were the best I?ve ever encountered; precise, careful and thorough.
This is a professional outfit run by a guy who takes great pride in his workmanship regardless of the size of the job and who has managed to find a crew that shares that philosophy.
We wanted to remodel our kitchen, 2 baths and replace old sliding doors in our ranch style home. We met with several other contractors and discussed our project, but we were concerned about how to coordinate all the different parts (demo, planning, appliance delivery, floors, electical and plumbing, etc) and how to manage a several week project with our older Labrador in the house. When we talked to Nelson we were impressed with his attention to detail, specific questions and advice, and knowledge and experience regarding all aspects of our project. He provided a timely and detailed proposal, answered our questions and provided revisions to the scope of work that met our needs. Most importantly, he said his crew could work around our dog, eliminating the need for her to head off to summer camp.
Nelson provided a shopping list for us (tile, fixtures, cabinets, countertops, etc) with several suggestions regarding where to shop. Each place we went to knew Nelson and had worked with him several years and all remarked that we would be very pleased with his work. With the guidance from the people he pointed us to we quickly picked out everything for the project and everyone simply coordinated delivery with Nelson- it couldn't have been easier.
His crew arrived promptly each morning, we discussed the plans for the day, they put down drop cloths and other protective cardboard on the floors and carpets in high traffic areas and hung plastic sheets to contain dust during the demo. Demo of the first bath went smoothly, minor issues typical of a 30+ year old house were encountered and fixed. They called me at the end of each day to review what had been completed and what (if anything) my wife and I needed to do before the next day's work. (We were planning to do most of the priming and painting as the rooms were remodeled). The bath was transformed before our eyes into a beautiful modern bath.
The kitchen and second bath demo and remodel was a much bigger and more disruptive undertaking, and went along pretty much like clockwork. Demo of both was basically done in a day, ripping out cabinets fixtures, a wall and floors in both rooms. All prep work (plumbing, new electric lines, subfloor, etc) was coordinated and done in a timely manner. Each day the house was left broom clean and orderly, and tools were stored out of the way.Nelson coordinated delivery of all materials (tile, flooring, cabinets, countertops, etc). His crew willingly took care of several little "extras" that we found and discussed as the project progressed. The new kitchen and bath came together beautifully.
Along the way Nelson provided advice for other small projects we decided to take on ourselves (refinishing and replacing some interior doors, new shelves, priming and painting etc). Nelson and his crew responded very quickly to address any minor details we pointed out after each room was finished.
The project was completed about a week ahead of schedule (about 4 weeks) with only some minor, agreed upon additional costs based on underlying repair issues or extras we added along the way. We are extremely pleased with the result and would highly recommend Peak Carpentry for any remodeling project.
Nelson was on site each day to get his guys set up and make sure everyone was on the same page. His guys were awesome...friendly, professional, showed up on time and had a great work ethic. (I was late getting home one day and they even let my dog out and played with him in the backyard). Cleaned up the site every day and were very courteous. What an asset to this company.
The project turned out beautifully. Everything, from the materials delivery, to the framing, to the tile, to the finish work and painting, came out exactly as we expected. On time and on budget.
We were definitely be using Nelson and Peak Carpentry for our next project!
Before the job I was also given a long list of places to go to look for the various materials needed. This was especially helpful for I was new to remodeling issues. The head person Nelson has also recently completed another remodel job for a colleague of mine who was also pleased with the high quality of work.
In short, I highly recommend Peak Carpentry. The work is high quality and price is reasonable, less than all my other estimates but one.
Nelson and his crew arrived promptly and covered everything to keep the house clean. Demolition started as determined and took a couple of days. Cabinets and appliances were donated. He left us the refrigerator to use for the duration of the remodel which was very nice. Plumbing was then installed and the sink plumbing was moved over so that the sink was under the window instead of in the corner as previously. After this the electricity was redone since lights were being moved and an undermount light being placed.
One additional cost of about $1.5k was that extra hardwood floorboards had to be placed under where the old peninsula existed since the new peninsula was not as wide and the hardwood floor did not extend under the old one. The hardwood floor people did an excellent job of matching our current wood and pattern and we were very pleased with the outcome. That was the only extra cost of note.
We were helped with our cabinet selection by a company recommended by Nelson and were completely satisfied with the excellent customer service. They also offered granite and we luckily found the perfect slab from this company along with backsplash tiles at a great price. We shopped around and could find nothing comparable for the look we wanted. Our installed cabinets included a glass corner door, drawers that self-close, a huge lazy-susan drawer and a new pantry. The granite was installed beautifully and the backsplash was perfect.
Nelson and crew offered some paint suggestions which turned out better than anything we might have chosen. Crown molding was placed all around the ceiling for a more traditional look. The hardwood floor was sanded and given a smooth matte gloss finish, just lovely. Our new pantry was installed with a granite buffet. We ordered our own light fixtures and those were installed for us. Our project turned out perfect and we are very happy with it. We have used Peak Carpentry before and we will use them again.
I'm really happy with the finished bathroom. The niches are great. I love that they kept the old red heating overhead light, and added some timer buttons. The installed a new much quieter fan with timer buttons and a new recessed light in the shower. They handled the extensive water damage from my old leaky shower door quickly and didn't charge much extra to fix it. Jared was also really helpful. After complaing to him that I was having some trouble finding a vanity that would fit my size requirement (it had to be really short to accomodate a niche and a medicine cabinet), Jared went out shopping for me at Lowes and offered to trim the legs on the in-stock vanity so that it would work.
I did have some issues with dust - as I am highly allergic.
All of the workers and subs were friendly and professional. I felt comfortable having them in my house while I was away at work or on vacation. I scheduled this job months in advance to coincide with vacation plans. They coordinated subs so that someone was in my house every day. The bathroom (with the exception of the custom shower door) was completed in 2 weeks.
I have no doubts that this new bathroom is built to stand the test of time.
