in Elkton, Maryland. I've never rated a company negatively online before.
S&M Paving deserves to be my first. In a recent job, S&M demonstrated
totally unprofessional and disrespectful behavior. As a long standing customer
of theirs, I was very disappointed. Not only did they not do the work as they
had promised, but they also completely blew me off as a customer, with no
regard to having not completed the work or for the inconveniences to me and my
family. Although, we had been completely courteous and respectful to them
through this issue, their last words and actions (or lack of it) to us were
disrespectful, arrogant, and uncaring. To summarize the situation, I scheduled
to have my driveway sealed as well as to have some minor repairs made. An
S&M inspector came out a few weeks prior to do a write up of the work and
to do the estimate. He wrote out the order specifying all the work needed. The
workers came out as scheduled. After the work was done, I found that most of
the repair work, i.e. those that were specifically identified in the
inspector?s work order, weren't done. I called the office the next day and
explained the problem. No apology was made, but they agreed and scheduled a
specific time for them to return. Without notice, the worker came back out
ahead of the scheduled date. We weren?t present for the work, and
unfortunately, the workers repaired only a single area, leaving unfinished
repairs, and didn?t do any sealing over the repaired area which they did do. I
called back to their office the next day and explained the situation. They
again made no apology or express any concern for the inconveniences. In fact,
they proceeded to try to run me off. Their only response to me was that I was
expecting too much from them for the job. They then told me to just keep my
money. I was shocked and appalled. I reminded them that the original work order
and estimate was made by their inspector. The work order clearly explained what
was needed. At no time had I asked for more than what had been written up by
their inspector. Their workers simply didn?t follow and finish the original job
order. As a follow-up, I wrote a email note to the owner, explaining the
situation and that I would have no recourse but to submit a negative review
online. Surprisingly, I receive a call back from the owner almost immediately.
We discussed the issue. The owner then suggested that he come out to do a
personal inspection of the work. I agreed, and it was scheduled. The owner said
that he would look over the work and get back to me on what he feels that they
can do. That scheduled visit has now come and gone. There was no visit and
inspection made by the owner and since then, no return contact by the owner to
us. In addition, since that time, the partial repair work that the workers had
come to do, i.e. the patched area which they neglected to seal, has started to
break up at the surface. That area will now have to be re-repaired. I did send
a note with pictures to the owner informing him of this. That was two weeks
ago. I have not heard anything back from him or anyone at S&M. I admit that
I am completely shocked at the lack of customer courtesy and arrogance that
S&M has displayed. This whole situation was unprofessional and disrespectful.
There was a clear lack of interest in quality and customer service. And based
on all of this, it is clear that S&M and their staff have very little
regard for residential customers. They have shown no remorse for the lapses by
their workers or for the inconveniences to me and my family or for not
completed the job. It is apparent that their only concern is for the
inconveniences that they felt were on them. I will have to now contact another
paving company to fix the mess that they left and to complete the job that they
didn?t do. S&M Paving has proved to be totally unprofessional and should be
embarrassed and ashamed of their actions and behavior. Their website advertises
this. ?Voted Favorite Cecil County, Maryland Paving Contractor for 7 years in a
row, we take pride in ensuring that each homeowner paving job is completed with
100% satisfaction in mind!? Apparently to S&M, ?customer satisfaction? is
achieved by walking away from the job and telling the customer to ?just keep
your money?. For S&M, ?customer satisfaction? is something that could
simply be bought off. Apparently, they don?t understand that it is really about
trust, quality, service, and doing the job right. For myself and many friends
in our community, ?customer satisfaction? is not about the money. S&M fails
miserably in all aspects of service and job quality. Stay away from S&M, particularly if you
are 'merely' a residential customer.
"no response needed"
Overall I would give them an A+
I contacted the contractor by phone. I explained that I wanted to take advantaged of the Angie's List Big deal that provided a driveway seal coating of up to 2,500 square feet for $338.00. I also explained that there was additional work that the driveway needed that was above and beyond the "Big Deal'. S & M sent a representative out and we discussed the particulars of the job. The 'rep' wrote up an estimate that included the "Big Deal' work as well as the additional I wanted done. I actually showed the 'rep' the 'Big Deal' that was on the Angie's List website before he wrote-up a contract. I read the contract before signing and I agreed to the terms. The contract outlined: the work to be performed; the amount to be paid for the total job ($520.00); an approximate start date; and described how the work would be done. I gave the contractor 'rep' a check in the amount of $520.00. As instructed, I made the check payable to the owner of S & W Paving and not to the company. I wanted the work to be complete while I was on vacation. That way I was sure no one would have to drive on the driveway while it was still 'wet'. S & M initially scheduled the job for Saturday, May 3rd, but didn't do the work until Monday, May 5. We got back home on May 14th.
My first impression of the completed driveway was one of disappointment. I had envisioned something else entirely different with a 'double' seal coating. I called the contractor and someone explained to me what a 'seal coating' actually is. I feel I received a much smaller measure of value for what was done. Had I known before hand what the result would have been, I would not have had the work done. I would have chalked this up as one of those 'live and learn' experiences, but for what has happened since.
When I tried to purchase this deal on the Angie's List website I was not certain that I had actually been able to do so. I didn't receive a confirmation that I had done so. In fact, I wasn't aware of this until I received correspondence from our credit card provider sometime in May. Fraudulent activity had occurred on our account, and the provider was issuing us new cards with a new account number. The correspondence also included a list of purchases made on the old account. A charge for Angie's List in the amount of $338.00 was one of the items listed. In my several conversations with Angie's List employees I have learned that S & M Paving was also paid by Angie's List for the "Big Deal". So, the contractor was in fact paid twice for the "Big Deal'. I contacted S & M paving in late May regarding this, and I was told by Peggy that they would be sending me a refund of $338.00. To date, I have received nothing.

Owner's son in law was very responsive to our needs. Suggested improvements over what we had planned. Gave us an estimate and we signed the contract on the spot. Price and customer service was much better than other contractors and estimates. S&M was able to schedule the job within a week, was on the job promptly, finished that day. Workers were courteous, hard working and did a great job. Four days later, S&M came back and applied a hardener to the new asphalt. Was not aware of such a practice, but results were great. Would recommend S&M for the quality of work.
