My wife and I are first time homebuyers. When we bought our home last January we knew that we would need a complete remodel of our kitchen. It was in especially sorry shape, with cabinets literally falling apart and electrical wiring and plumbing that was out-of-code. Of course, before we could start our planned remodel COVID hit, which complicated our plans for updating our kitchen even further. In hindsight, I severely underestimated just how difficult it is to find an honest, skillful, and economic contractor. Luckily for my wife and I, Horizons Unlimited is all of those things, and so much more. To outline the weaknesses of each of the other firms we spoke with during this whole process would take far too long. Suffice it to say that Horizons Unlimited was the only firm that we found that had impeccable integrity and provided high-quality remodeling services at a fair price. In fact, we searched for many months and spoke to dozens of contracting firms before we found Horizons Unlimited. During this search process we encountered our fair share of folks who were less contractors and more high-pressure salespeople. In one instance, a contractor from a large local contracting firm came to inspect our kitchen and gave us a verbal estimate that fit our price range. Later, after half a dozen unanswered calls and emails, he sent a contract for us to sign that quoted a price nearly double what he stated verbally. His reasoning was that due to COVID there was an increased demand for remodeling, and therefore the price for his firm’s services would be higher. In another instance, a small mom and pop company gave us a remarkably low quote. However, when we asked whether certain work left out of their bid would need to be done in order to meet code, we were essentially told not to worry about having to meet new electrical code requirements. I only describe these two instances to highlight just how different Horizons Unlimited is. The team at Horizons Unlimited is transparent and operates with absolute integrity. Bill is a handshake deal kind of guy. Old school in the absolute best way. Whenever I had a question about the project Bill would shoot it to me straight, even when it was news that I did not want to hear necessarily. For example, due to increased demand for remodeling materials, the cabinet supplier delayed delivering or our new cabinets. The Horizons team kept in constant communication with me throughout, giving me updates and outlining how they were working with the supplier to expedite my cabinets. Frankly, Bill and team were bulldogs on my behalf when it came to issues like this. Any other contractor could have easily sat idle while blaming the supplier for the delay. Not Horizons Unlimited. They looped me into their constant communications with the supplier and made sure that our project wouldn’t be delayed a single day longer than absolutely necessary. However, the single most impressive aspect of Horizons Unlimited was their integrity. People are human, and mistakes can happen. During our project one of our knobs was installed in the wrong spot. Now, it would have been easy to hide this mistake. Frankly, I may have never caught it. But that’s just not how Horizon’s Unlimited operates. As soon as it occurred, the called me up, showed me their error, and before the end of the day they had ordered a new cabinet door so that they could correct the mistake. In fact, Bill insisted that he would not accept our final check until he had fixed this issue for us. They had this fixed in less than a week and I happily delivered Bill his well-earned final check. Also, it’s worth adding that my wife and I made a mistake of our own when we were communicating with the Horizons Unlimited team in designing our kitchen. Namely, we ended up needing two cabinets that were larger, and therefore a little more expensive, than our remodel contract had planned. When the shoe was on the other foot, and we were the ones that had messed up, Horizons Unlimited refused to take our extra money. Essentially, they held us harmless for our little error, even though they took full responsibility for their small error. Like I said. The team at Horizons is honest and trustworthy to a degree that is rarely seen anymore. Their work was of the highest quality, and their prices are more than fair. I have many more remodeling projects in mind and will only ever trust my home to Bill and his team at Horizons.

I am pleased to be able to write a review for Horizons Unlimited Home Improvements. From the very beginning of my home buying search, Bill Gmeinwieser was very much involved. He was one of the first contractors that I called to inquire about home renovations and/or custom built homes. I found that Bill was very direct in his approach and provided the most important feedback on the process of becoming a home owner. Additionally, his costs were not to high, but not the lowest either. Their fees were kinda of right in the middle, which is fine because you don't want a contractor that is too expensive or a contractor that has very low prices and you end up getting a you get what you pay for type of deal. Once I decided that Bill Gmeinwieser was going to be my contractor and as we began to work together, I found that everything he'd mention from our initial conversation was exactly the type of service that I was getting, plus some. Bill and his brother Mike helped give me great advice on how to negotiate for my mortgage loan. Which resulted in a purchase price for much lower than I originally bid for. Bill definitely finds ways to work with you when it comes to adding additional projects that were not part of the original contract, because his ultimate goal is to satisfy the customer. I had a complete renovation done to my home, and the house turned out very beautifully. Bill and his team worked at a very safe and steady pace, during the start of Covid-19. I was very pleased to know that all of the HUHI construction guys were practicing safety measures, when working on my home. There were no issues and I was able to safely move into my home, and that was important to me. I have gotten plenty of compliments on my home. But most importantly, I am very satisfied and can truly say that after being in my home for a little over two months now it is the most comfortable place to come home from a long days work and be able to relax in this beauty. Horizons' pricing was fair. Materials and workmanship were excellent. Bill, the owner, priced the work, communicated with me directly about the details, and scheduled the work promptly. His employee, Mike, reviewed the workmanship with me at the completion of the project in a very polite and professional manner. Horizons had done work for me 20 years ago and they continue to be an excellent company. I highly recommend them.

This is the third time we have used Horizons. First for a front portico, second for new siding (with housewrap and insulation underneath) and a new roof and most recently for the deck with a roof covering our rear door. Obviously we like these guys. First of all they are punctual. Show when they say and finish the job before moving on to the next one. Clean up afterwards and check back to make sure you are happy. Second they are professional. Know their business and take pride in what they do. I was impressed that several of the workers on our most recent job also worked on our front portico which was almost five years ago. It seems a lot of other other contractors have entirely new staffs from one year to the next. I think it is a testament to Horizons that they must keep their employees happy. Third they take the time to find out what you want and explain what they are proposing. For the most recent work Bill came to our house three times to meet with us to make sure he understood what we wanted. Finally they do great work. I have done some major home improvements myself and was previously employed in the building industry. I know what good work is and what shortcuts some contractors take. These guys don't take shortcuts. If you want a quality, timely project I wouldn't hesitate to use Horizons.

It went well. The contractor and workers were there when they said they would be. Did the work as contracted. Had to replace the first set of doors installed as they were not a good choice, but made good on their work. The doors are fine. Painted and finished all work. All in all a good experience. Very easy to work with.

I hired Horizons after bidding my project to several GC's. Our contract was $38,200 for concrete, framing, window / door install (owner supplied materials), electric, plumbing, insulation, drywall, hardi-siding, and stone work. My home is in Historic Ellicott City, and Horizons ensured that the installation matched the design approved by the Historic Commission. Bill Gmeinwieser was my main contact from bidding to completion. He was knowledgeable and respectful, even in the rare instance where we needed to negotiate specific work items. His work crews and subcontractors were talented, professional, and kept the job site tidy. My husband and I were very happy with the high level of quality and value that Horizons provided for our project, and would not hesitate to recommend them or use them again in the future.

The crew called to let me know they were on their way, however, I was at work the day they came. They encountered rotten facia boards where the soffit attaches. There was a misunderstanding of my wishes regarding the repair and instead of contacting me to revise the difficulty of the repair and give me a new quote, they rigged it the best they could. I contacted the owner and asked that he come out to review the repair. At that point I was told that it was basically my fault. They subsequently lied on their invoice, saying that they did not have a contact number to reach me. I have no confidence in their ethics.

I came to the jobsite and pointed as obvious bad wood on your house and you chose not to do those repairs. We were told to re-hang the soffit. I can't see 40 ft. in the air and didn't;'t know about the bad fascia wood. The number we had was a cell number in which all we usually would leave a message. There wasn't any discussed time to do the repair as it was an exterior repair. You told us not to do the obvious repairs so why we think you would want to do a repair 40 ft. in the air. That was my call and I told them as the salesperson and the owner to do the best they could. I also gave you a price to fix and it and you refused. As you stated above it was my fault when by signing the contract and directing us to fix the house according to your wishes it is your fault."

The entire Horizon's team from the owner to each of the workers were professional, courteous, responsive and placed great attention to detail. The work on the floor tile was acceptable, but far from the level of quality provided by other contractors we engaged in the past. The amount of grout purchased for the job was at least four times that needed. The installation of the vanity was poorly done. The technician did not take accurate measures for the supply and drain lines. As a result he completely butchered the back of the cabinet to make it fit. The "fix" provided by the company was to cut a new "skin" to place in the back of the cabinet. The result is far from satisfactory. In addition, instead of moving an electrical outlet up a couple inches to make room for the new and higher vanity, the technician simply cut out room on the backsplash to fit around the outlet and then proceeded to caulk over the outlet cover. I'm not even sure the installation meets code with regard to placement of the electrical outlet.

Horizons was prompt with getting us an estimate which was in line with the assessment from the insurance company. Work began on time. There was some communication lacking when the subfloor need to be repaired differently than stated on the contract. That was worked out and work proceeded. The work took twice as along as estimated but the two man team worked very carefully with lots and lots of tile cutting that was needed for the space. In the end the floor looks great. We are pleased with the end result.

Horizons took our initial design and enhanced it with their experience, working with different material without going over our budget to create our long desired three seasons room. They were very professional and cleaned up every day, even after a long Saturday. The comradery among the workers shows they work well together as a team and enjoy and take pride in their work. The room was completed on time. Horizons warrants against defects in workmanship for one year from the date of completion.
