Also, Tripp insisted that 2 wall tiles needed to be broken out and that the toilet's water source hose needed to be moved to the left 3and quot; to accommodate the new toilet without using the template provided by the manufacturer. He performed this part of the service while he was there giving me the estimate.
I found out from another contractor (who I hired instead to install the toilet) that the water source DID NOT need to be moved if using the template provided by the manufacturer.
And, when I cancelled the scheduled service date for the toilet install, Tripp sent me a bill for $150 just for the 5 minutes of work involved with moving the water source -- which wasn't necessary in the first place!
His explanation for his outrageous charges was that he worked for Len the Plumber and that's the rate he would have charged!!!
"[removed members name] called our company because she was unable to install her toilet. She had purchased a Kohler toilet and also purchased an offset flange but was still unsuccessful. Total estimate for all proposed work: $500 Total charge for work we completed: $150 Total amount customer actually paid: $75 mailed with a letter of explanation two months later. Content of actual 11/15/13 invoice below: "Investigated reason closet flange in 1st floor powder room was installed too close to back wall to accommodate customer's new toilet. I crawled under house and discovered the toilet pipe to be against a floor joist, therefore unable to move pipe to ideal location because joist cannot be cut through. The only solution is to use an offset flange. Also, the existing shut-off valve needs to be moved because it is in the way of the new toilet, and the pipe is behind a tiled wall. The customer's toilet is a Kohler and not a standard install and came with a template requiring special anchors be bolted to the floor. ESTIMATE to move pipe in the wall, supply and install a new shut-off valve, wax ring, and supply tube, install customer supplied off-set flange and toilet: $500.00 TOTAL JOB SCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY 11/22/13. "Customer requested that I move the pipe today so she could repair the tile wall prior to my return in install the toilet. I chiseled out tile and drywall behind tile, drained water system to house, cut off pipe in the wall and removed shut-off valve. Moved 1/2" cpvc water pipe 3" to the left and capped new stub-out." Ms. Weisel was not charged for the work completed above on 11/15/13. Chris was there for approximately an hour and a half. She called the next week before our scheduled date to return and asked if she could pay for the work completed to date that she did not want us to return to finish the job. We mailed the above invoice to her on 11/19/14 charging her $150 for what we did. As of 12/14/13 we still had not received any payment for the job and I mailed her a 2nd notice. I then called Ms. Weisel on 12/16/13 at 9:30am to collect payment as the invoice was now a month overdue. She replied "You'll get it." and hung out on me. On 1/9/14 we received a check for $75 with a letter. Content of letter below: "The $75 represents the fair market value of the service you performed on November 15, 2013: moving a pipe 3" to the left. I am paying you despite the fact that NONE of the work you did was necessary to properly install the toilet according to the manufacturer's template! The plumber who actually did the work that you estimated would cost $500 did the job for $200 and followed the manufacturer's template. And, because you unnecessarily moved the wall connection, the manufacturer-supplied connection hose from the wall to the toilet could not be used - it wasn't long enough.""
