Check has an extensive knowledge of building materials and construction techniques and how they have changed over time. His knowledge is so extensive that he was even able to explain to us, in simple terms, the science behind some of the discoloration of bricks in the basement of one of the houses he inspected for us. Chuck's prices are a marginally higher than other inspectors, but you really do get what you pay for and the extra couple bucks was money well spent. If you're looking for a top quality home inspector in the DC area, Chuck Itte is the way to go.
After we settled on the house and took possession, we immediately discovered a massive leak under the kitchen sink. It turned out that the garbage disposal had a 1and quot; hole in the side. Pretty basic to see whether the sink leaks underneath. Apparently he didn't check. He also didn't mention the incredibly slow drain in the bathtub.
He mentioned that there was evidence of past water leakage into the foundation but stated that it did not seem to be ongoing. He did not give a reason for why he thought it was not ongoing. Funny, every contractor I've had in there immediately comments on it (and the exterior evidence of it) and states that it is definitely ongoing.
Most importantly, there is a significant plumbing leak in the basement, which was hidden by the seller by stapling Tyvek to the overhead floor joists from the level above. I didn't expect him to rip down the Tyvek, but he should have at least mentioned what everyone else has told me: there is no reason to have Tyvek up there, it would only be to hide something.
